Southwest Finland or Finland Proper (Finnish: Varsinais-Suomi; Swedish: Egentliga Finland; Latin: Ducatus Finlandiae Meridionalis) is a historical province in southwestern Finland, administered by its historic capital of Turku (Swedish: Åbo). It borders Satakunta, Tavastia, and Uusimaa. It is also bounded by the Baltic sea facing Åland. There was also a modern region by the name Finland Proper. Southwest Finnish dialects were spoken in Southwest Finland.

Koroinen (Finnish; Korois in Swedish) is a district in the Koroinen ward of the city of Turku, in Finland. It is located to the north of the city centre, across the river Aura from the Turku Student Village. Koroinen is mostly non-built-up area, consisting largely of recreational area. The current (as of 2004) population of the district is 26.

Räntämäki is a district in the Koroinen ward of the city of Turku, in Finland. It is located to the north of the city, and consists mostly of low-density residential area.

Kaerla is a district in the Tampereentie ward of the city of Turku, in Finland. It is located to the north of the city centre, next to the densely built suburb of Runosmäki. Kaerla is mostly low-density residential area, but it also includes the area of Impivaara, with numerous sports and recreational facilities such as an ice hockey arena, an indoor football venue, the city's main swimming centre, as well as a tennis centre. The current (as of 2004) population of Kaerla is 2,182, and it is decreasing at an annual rate of 1.47%. 16.50% of the district's population are under 15 years old, while 17.74% are over 65. The district's linguistic makeup is 94.96% Finnish, 2.11% Swedish, and 2.93% other.

Kastu is a district in the Tampereentie ward of the city of Turku, in Finland. It is located to the north of the city centre, and consists mostly of low-density residential area. The current (as of 2004) population of Kastu is 2,002, and it is decreasing at an annual rate of 1.35%. 10.14% of the district's population are under 15 years old, while 28.12% are over 65. The district's linguistic makeup is 95.60% Finnish, 2.15% Swedish, and 2.25% other.

Turku Student Village (Finnish: Turun ylioppilaskylä, abbreviated Yo-kylä, Swedish: Studentbyn) is the largest single student housing complex in Finland. It houses nearly 3,500 residents in 95 three-storied tenements. The Student Village is located in the district of Nummi near the city centre of Turku. It is in the immediate proximity of the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University and the Turku School of Economics and Business Administration. There is one shop in the area, plus several day care centres, schools, a cemetery and a Lutheran church. The area offers good opportunities for both outdoor and indoor sports, as there are hiking trails and facilities for activities such as swimming, tennis, volleyball and basketball among other things. The Student Village also has good public transport connections, with buses every fifteen minutes. The flats in the Student Village are mostly self-contained studios, but many buildings have single rooms with common kitchens, and there is also a number of flats with more than one room (mainly intended for families). The rents are generally rather low, starting from under € 300 a month for a single room with a shared kitchen. The Student Village has broadband Internet access available for students of the three universities, the price of which is included in the rent. The Student Village was constructed between the years 1969 and 1979, and has been renovated in the late 1990s to the early 2000s. It is managed by the Turku Student Village Foundation (TYS) founded in 1966 by the Student Union of the University of Turku. TYS also owns and manages student housing in other parts of Turku, and in Rauma. The Student Village is also home to a statue called Posankka which represents a hybrid between a marzipan-pig and a rubber duck.

St. Catherine's Church (Finnish: Pyhän Katariinan kirkko, Swedish: S:ta Katarina kyrka) is located in Nummi, a suburb of Turku, Finland, in the same district as Turku Student Village. It represents old medieval stone church building tradition. Although it was completely destroyed and has undergone several renovations, it has preserved something of its original appearance and retains the basic plan of a medieval Finnish church. The construction was begun in the 1340s; the sacristy was completed first and the church later. Bishop Hemming and Bishop Thomas of Växjö consecrated the church on 22 January 1351.The church was named after its patron saint Catherine of Alexandria in 1991. It used to be located in the region of Kaarina and was known was Kaarina Church. The first mention of Saint Catherine of Alexandria was in a signet with which vicar Jacob of Nummi confirmed the then episcopal election. Nummi, which surrounded the church, however became a part of Turku in 1939. When Kaarina became its own parish, the church changed its name to St. Catherine's Church.

Posankka (Swedish: Grisankan) is a statue located in Turku, Finland. The statue, which is located near the campus area of the University of Turku and the Turku Student Village, represents a hybrid between a marzipan pig ("possu") and a rubber duck ("ankka"). It is a pink animal with a duck's lower body and a pig's head.The statue was designed by Alvar Gullichsen in 1999 when it was placed floating in the Aurajoki river in Turku. The statue has stood at its current location since 2001.Every winter, a Santa Claus hat is put on Posankka's head, and on Walpurgis Night it is capped with a Finnish student cap.

Raunistula is a district of the city of Turku, in Finland. It is located to the north of the city centre, on the west bank of the river Aura. Raunistula consists mostly of low-density residential area, and the remains of the industrial area there are to be redeveloped into residences in the near future. The current (as of 2004) population of Raunistula is 1,442, and it is increasing at an annual rate of 3.47%. 13.87% of the district's population are under 15 years old, while 13.38% are over 65. The district's linguistic makeup is 92.02% Finnish, 4.92% Swedish, and 3.05% other.

Turku School of Economics (Finnish Turun kauppakorkeakoulu) is a unit of the University of Turku located in Turku, Finland. It was established as an independent higher education business school in 1950, until it was acquired by the state in 1977. It was the second largest school of its kind in Finland, with approximately 2,000 graduate and 250 postgraduate students and a staff of 350. In January 2010, Turku School of Economics became the seventh faculty of the University of Turku. Its former rector, Professor Tapio Reponen, is now a vice rector of the University of Turku.In addition to teaching a wide variety of economic and business related subjects, the faculty conducts research on matters relating to its field, and offers consulting services to businesses. Teaching is mainly carried out in Finnish, but there are also a number of courses available in English. As a higher education institution, Turku School of Economics had been one of the most efficient universities in terms of master's per professor.

The University of Turku (Finnish: Turun yliopisto, in Swedish: Åbo universitet, shortened UTU), located in Turku in southwestern Finland, is the third largest university in the country as measured by student enrollment, after the University of Helsinki and Tampere University. It was established in 1920 and also has facilities at Rauma, Pori, Kevo and Seili. The university is a member of the Coimbra Group.

The I District is the easternmost of the central districts of Turku, Finland. It is located on the east side of the river Aura, between Uudenmaankatu and the Helsinki motorway (Finnish national road 1). The main street Hämeenkatu divides the district in Sirkkala and Universities area, and continues as the national road 10 towards Hämeenlinna. The district hosts all three universities of the city, the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi, and the Turku School of Economics and Business Administration. The city's central hospital TYKS is also located in the district, as well as the Cathedral of Turku and the residence of the Archbishop of Finland. The district is rather densely populated, having a population of 6,177 (as of 2004) and an annual population growth rate of -0.63%. 5.47% of the district's population are under 15 years old, while 18.67% are over 65. The district's linguistic makeup is 85.54% Finnish, 10.94% Swedish, and 3.51% other.
