Burstwick

Rye Hill and Burstwick railway station is a disused railway station on the North Eastern Railway's Hull and Holderness Railway midway between Burstwick and Ryehill in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was opened by the Hull and Holderness Railway on 27 June 1854. On 1 July 1881 it was renamed to Rye Hill and on 23 September 1929 changed name again this time to Rye Hill and Burstwick. The station was closed to passengers on 19 October 1964. It is now a private residence.

Camerton is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) east of Hull city centre and lies just north of the A1033 road. It forms part of the civil parish of Thorngumbald.

Ryehill is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) east of Hull city centre and lies just south of the A1033 road, (the main road from Hull to Withernsea). It forms part of the civil parish of Thorngumbald. Ryhill was served from 1854 to 1964 by Burstwick railway station on the Hull and Holderness Railway. The hamlet itself consists of 15 or so houses, and two main lanes that run through the hamlet are Marsh and Pitt Lanes (both of these are 30 mph). Ryehill is mainly known for its award-winning pub, The Crooked Billet (CAMRA Pub of the Year, 2007). There are not a large number of minors in the hamlet, however those who are present attend Thorngumbald Primary school, usually followed by South Holderness Technology College (a large secondary school on the outskirts of Hedon). The crime rate is almost non-existent in the local area. Ryehill is surrounded by fields and grazing land, but is within walking distance of the villages of Thorngumbald and Keyingham, both of which offer all the local amenities. On 31 December 2021 Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon said the first reading taken at Ryehill in East Yorkshire at 11:00 GMT had "provisionally broken the New Year's Eve record… Our station at Ryehill in East Yorkshire has recorded 14.9C (58.8F) today, which tops the previous record of 14.8C (58.6F)." The figure later rose to 15.8C (60.4F), last recorded at the Met Office's station in Merryfield in south-west Somerset.

The A1033 road is a main arterial route across Kingston upon Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire connecting Hull with Withernsea. The road carries traffic to and from the Port of Hull and Salt End at its western end, and local and holiday traffic at its eastern end. It is a primary route from the junction of the A63 road to the Salt End roundabout and is maintained on that section by National Highways. The section by the docks is also part of a designated abnormal load route. The section northwards from the A63 junction to Dunswell, is known to have traffic problems.

Thorngumbald is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness, 8 miles (13 km) east of Hull on the A1033. The civil parish is formed by the village and the hamlets of Camerton and Ryehill. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 3,392, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 3,106.

Keyingham is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately 10 miles (16 km) east of Kingston upon Hull city centre and lies on the A1033 road.

Elstronwick is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 3.5 miles (6 km) north-east of the town of Hedon and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north-west of the village of Burton Pidsea. The civil parish is formed by the villages of Elstronwick and Lelley together with the hamlet of Danthorpe. According to the 2011 UK census, Elstronwick parish had a population of 298, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 287.The parish church of St Lawrence on Front Lane is designated a Grade II listed building and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. There is also a chapel. A further Grade II listed building is Elstronwick Hall.Village amenities include a small playing field. In 1823 Baines's History, Directory and Gazetteer of the County of York gave Elstronwick's name as 'Elsternwick'. The village at the time was in the parish of Humbleton and in the Wapentake of Holderness. There was a chapel of ease, "apparently of great antiquity", and a free school. The village had a population of 154, with occupations including six farmers, two wheelwrights, a blacksmith, a shoemaker, and the licensed victualler of The Crown and Anchor public house. Also directory-listed was a school mistress, two gentlemen and a foreman. Once a week a carrier operated between the village and Hull. The Crown and Anchor closed and was converted into cottages c. 2015.

Burton Pidsea is a village and civil parish in the Holderness area of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately 11 miles (18 km) east of Hull city centre. According to the 2011 UK census, Burton Pidsea parish had a population of 944, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 888.There is a church, village hall, a minimarket shop which incorporates on its forecourt a petrol station, two public houses, a primary school and a playing field. Other local amenities include a bowls club. The church dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul was designated a Grade I listed building in 1966 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England.

St Peter and St Paul's Church is the parish church of Burton Pidsea, a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, in England. A church in the village was first recorded around 1160. Parts of the nave and tower may date from this period, while the chancel was added in the early 13th century. The nave was rebuilt and a south aisle and chapel added in the 14th century, while the tower was rebuilt in the 15th century. The porch was rebuilt around 1800, then the church was restored by R. S. Smith between 1866 and 1868, the work including the rebuilding of the chancel. The building was grade I listed in 1966. The church is built of cobble with stone dressings, a brick porch and a slate roof. It consists of a nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chancel with a south chapel and a north vestry, and a west tower embraced by the aisles. The tower has three stages, a moulded plinth, diagonal buttresses, chamfered string courses, a pointed three-light west window, pointed two-light bell openings, and an embattled parapet. Along the aisles are pinnacled buttresses. Inside, there is an octagonal 13th-century font.

Holderness was a rural district in the East Riding of Yorkshire from 1935 to 1974. It covered the southern part of the East Riding's North Sea coast.It was created by a County Review Order made under the Local Government Act 1929 by the merger of Patrington Rural District, most of Skirlaugh Rural District and part of Sculcoates Rural District.It survived until 1974, when, under the Local Government Act 1972 it was abolished, and became part of the larger Holderness borough in Humberside. Since 1996 it has formed part of a unitary East Riding.

The Nancy is a historic former pub on Church Street in Burton Pidsea, a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Several buildings were constructed on Burton Pidsea's village green in the 18th century. The core of what is now the pub was built for the village blacksmith in the 18th century, probably incorporating an earlier building. By 1852, it had been converted into a pub, named for Nancy, a successful racehorse bred in the village. The building was Grade II listed in 1987. Around 2014, it was renovated at a cost of £250,000, to serve as a restaurant, tearoom and ice cream parlour in addition to a bar. The pub is built of colourwashed red brick with a pantile roof, and it is in two blocks. The left block has two storeys and three bays. It has a stepped brick cornice, tumbled-in brick to the raised gables, and contains sash windows. The right block has a single storey and attics, and four bays. It contains two doorways, varied windows, and four gabled roof dormers.
