Keyingham railway station

Keyingham is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately 10 miles (16 km) east of Kingston upon Hull city centre and lies on the A1033 road.

The A1033 road is a main arterial route across Kingston upon Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire connecting Hull with Withernsea. The road carries traffic to and from the Port of Hull and Salt End at its western end, and local and holiday traffic at its eastern end. It is a primary route from the junction of the A63 road to the Salt End roundabout and is maintained on that section by National Highways. The section by the docks is also part of a designated abnormal load route. The section northwards from the A63 junction to Dunswell, is known to have traffic problems.

Ottringham is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 12 miles (19 km) to the east of Hull city centre and 5 miles (8 km) south-west of Withernsea. It lies on the A1033 road from Hull to Withernsea. According to the 2011 UK census, Ottringham parish had a population of 597, a reduction on the 2001 UK census figure of 637. In 1823 parish inhabitants numbered 637. Occupations included twelve farmers, some of whom were land owners, four shoemakers, three grocers, two tailors, two wheelwrights, a blacksmith, a corn miller, a horse dealer, and the landlord of the White Horse public house. Two carriers operated between the village and Hull, South Frodingham, Holmpton, and Skeckling, on Tuesdays and Fridays. Letters were received and sent on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays by Wing's caravan [accommodation coach]. A Methodist chapel existed, built in 1815. The name Ottringham possibly derives from the Old English Oteringashām or Oteringhām, meaning 'village of Oter's people' or 'village at the otter place'. The parish church of St Wilfrid is a Grade I listed building. In November 2024 the church was placed on the Heritage at Risk Register by Historic England who gave a grant to start repairs. Ottringham was served from 1854 to 1964 by Ottringham railway station on the Hull and Holderness Railway. During the Second World War, in 1943, the BBC built a transmitting station at Ottringham, called BBC Ottringham or OSE5. Its purpose was to counter the increase in German jamming signals, and to broadcast propaganda into Germany. Following the end of the war, and with lack of funds, the station was deconstructed in 1953 and its transmitters moved to Droitwich. In 1958 a Ham class minesweeper HMS Ottringham was named after the village. Ottringham contains two public houses and a service garage. It is close to a main bus route.

Halsham House is a historic building in the village of Halsham, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade II listed building originally established as a school and schoolhouse in the late 16th century and later converted into a private residence.

The Constable Mausoleum is a historic building in Halsham, a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, in England. The mausoleum was constructed for Edward Constable. It was designed by Thomas Atkinson, and constructed between 1792 and 1802, the work being completed by Atkinson's son, John. On completion, the bones of 27 of Constable's ancestors were transferred from All Saints' Church, Halsham. The mausoleum is approached by an avenue of yew trees. Around 1830, the base of the mausoleum was altered by William Mountain, and the building was restored around 1910. The building was grade II* listed in 1952. The mausoleum is built of limestone and sandstone, and consists of a circular domed temple on a wider basement. The basement has a plinth and chamfered rustication, and contains a round-arched entrance under a perron leading up to a balcony with wrought iron railings. The temple has a moulded plinth, a blind arcade of eight round arches with pilasters, above which are recessed blind panels. Over this is a frieze, a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a dome with a moulded cap and a cross finial. Inside, the main temple space have half-domed niches, and a frieze above has carved shields. The eastern niche has a crucifix. In the centre is a circular well with a tall pedestal holding a white urn. The basement has a vaulted circular corridor with tablets commemorating the individuals buried there.

Halsham is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Withernsea town centre and it lies south of the B1362 road. According to the 2011 UK census, Halsham parish had a population of 255, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 260. The name Halsham derives from the Old English halshām meaning 'village on a neck of land'. The Anglican All Saints' Church, Halsham was designated a Grade I listed building in 1966 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. To the east of the church is the Constable Mausoleum which is designated as a Grade II* listed building. Halsham House, a former school, dates to the late 16th century. HMS Halsham, a Ham class of inshore minesweeper, was named after the village. In 1823 inhabitants in the village numbered 315. Occupations included sixteen farmers, three wheelwrights, a bricklayer, a grocer, a blacksmith, and the landlord of the Sun public house. A carrier operated between the village and Hull on Tuesdays. The village was described as consisting of "chiefly a number of respectable farm houses, scattered at irregular distances from each other". The Constable family mausoleum is described as of stone, with polished white marble facing, with, at its centre, a monument to Sir William Constable (Historic England credits it to Sir Edward; Pevsner to Sir William), built at a cost of £10,000. Sir John Constable of Kirby Knowle in 1584 left 80/- (shillings) per year from his estate to be paid out in perpetuity: 20/- for the education of eight poor children with a further 24/- for their satchels and books; 32/- for eight poor men; and 4/- for two poor women. He provided for a hospital for the use of the poor men and women of the parish.

Burstwick is a village and civil parish in the Holderness region of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated about 8 miles (13 km) east of Hull city centre. It lies on the B1362 road.

Rye Hill and Burstwick railway station is a disused railway station on the North Eastern Railway's Hull and Holderness Railway midway between Burstwick and Ryehill in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was opened by the Hull and Holderness Railway on 27 June 1854. On 1 July 1881 it was renamed to Rye Hill and on 23 September 1929 changed name again this time to Rye Hill and Burstwick. The station was closed to passengers on 19 October 1964. It is now a private residence.

Ryehill is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) east of Hull city centre and lies just south of the A1033 road, (the main road from Hull to Withernsea). It forms part of the civil parish of Thorngumbald. Ryhill was served from 1854 to 1964 by Burstwick railway station on the Hull and Holderness Railway. The hamlet itself consists of 15 or so houses, and two main lanes that run through the hamlet are Marsh and Pitt Lanes (both of these are 30 mph). Ryehill is mainly known for its award-winning pub, The Crooked Billet (CAMRA Pub of the Year, 2007). There are not a large number of minors in the hamlet, however those who are present attend Thorngumbald Primary school, usually followed by South Holderness Technology College (a large secondary school on the outskirts of Hedon). The crime rate is almost non-existent in the local area. Ryehill is surrounded by fields and grazing land, but is within walking distance of the villages of Thorngumbald and Keyingham, both of which offer all the local amenities. On 31 December 2021 Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon said the first reading taken at Ryehill in East Yorkshire at 11:00 GMT had "provisionally broken the New Year's Eve record… Our station at Ryehill in East Yorkshire has recorded 14.9C (58.8F) today, which tops the previous record of 14.8C (58.6F)." The figure later rose to 15.8C (60.4F), last recorded at the Met Office's station in Merryfield in south-west Somerset.

Camerton is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) east of Hull city centre and lies just north of the A1033 road. It forms part of the civil parish of Thorngumbald.

St Peter and St Paul's Church is the parish church of Burton Pidsea, a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, in England. A church in the village was first recorded around 1160. Parts of the nave and tower may date from this period, while the chancel was added in the early 13th century. The nave was rebuilt and a south aisle and chapel added in the 14th century, while the tower was rebuilt in the 15th century. The porch was rebuilt around 1800, then the church was restored by R. S. Smith between 1866 and 1868, the work including the rebuilding of the chancel. The building was grade I listed in 1966. The church is built of cobble with stone dressings, a brick porch and a slate roof. It consists of a nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chancel with a south chapel and a north vestry, and a west tower embraced by the aisles. The tower has three stages, a moulded plinth, diagonal buttresses, chamfered string courses, a pointed three-light west window, pointed two-light bell openings, and an embattled parapet. Along the aisles are pinnacled buttresses. Inside, there is an octagonal 13th-century font.
