St George's Hundred, Dorset

St Mary's Church is an Anglican church in the village of Charminster, Dorset, in the Diocese of Salisbury. It is a Grade I listed building. The oldest parts date from the 11th and 12th centuries, and the tower was built in the 16th century.

Wolfeton House (sometimes Wolveton House) is an early Tudor and Elizabethan manor house in Dorset, England. It is situated amongst water-meadows north-west of Dorchester not far from the confluence of the rivers Frome and Cerne. It is near to the village of Charminster.

Charminster is a village and civil parish in west Dorset, England, situated on the River Cerne and A352 road 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the county town Dorchester. In the 2011 census the parish had a population of 2,940 and also contains the hamlet of Charlton Down. The village name derives from the River Cerne and the small 'minster' church of St Mary, resulting in "Cerneminster" (recorded in 1223), which eventually evolved into Charminster. The village, which includes Wolfeton House, was the place of origin of Richard Norman and family, one of the Planters of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in America, who arrived there in ca. 1626. Scientist Margaret Bastock died in the village in 1982, aged 62. Charminster is in the Charminster and Cerne Valley electoral ward, which stretches from the northern outskirts of Dorchester through Cerne Abbas to Minterne Magna. The total population of this ward at the 2011 census was 4,768.

Bradford Peverell is a village and civil parish in the English county of Dorset, 2 miles (3.2 km) north-west of the county town Dorchester. It is sited by the south bank of the River Frome, among low chalk hills on the dip slope of the Dorset Downs. The A37 road between Dorchester and Yeovil passes to the north of the village on the other side of the river's water meadows. In the 2011 census the population of the parish (which includes the hamlet of Muckleford to the north-west) was 370.Bradford Peverell is the birthplace of the historian John Hutchins, who was born here in 1698. His work on the history of the county, History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset, was published in 1774. In the 1st century a Roman aqueduct ran through where the village is now sited; it followed a line from Notton, a few miles upstream, to Dorchester, which then was the Roman town of Durnovaria. The remaining sections of the aqueduct are a scheduled monument.In 1850 the parish church was rebuilt in a 13th/14th-century style, though various fittings and monuments were retained from the earlier building. The new design was by Decimus Burton. The church is Grade II* listed.The Frome Valley Trail long-distance footpath runs through the village.

The church is a Grade II* listed building.In the churchyard is Bradford Peverell's war memorial which contains the names of those who fell in both World Wars. It was completed and erected in January 1921 and is made of Dartmoor granite. It became a Grade II listed monument in 2015.

Bradford Peverell and Stratton Halt was a station on the Great Western Railway on what had originally been part of the Wiltshire, Somerset & Weymouth Railway. It was in the parish of Stratton, just east of the main part of the village but also close to the parish of Bradford Peverell which it was also intended to serve. The relatively modern looking concrete platforms and shelters, standard products of the former Southern Railway concrete factory at Exmouth Junction, can still be seen next to the bridge carrying the line over the A37 Dorchester - Yeovil road.

Poundbury is an experimental urban extension on the western outskirts of Dorchester in the county of Dorset, England. The development is led by the Duchy of Cornwall, and had the keen endorsement of King Charles III when he was Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall. Under the direction of its lead architect and planner Léon Krier, its design is based on traditional architecture and New Urbanist philosophy. Due for completion in 2025, it is expected to house a population of 6,000. There are 2,000 people in more than 180 businesses engaged in its development and construction. Poundbury has been praised for reviving the low-rise streetscape built to the human scale and for echoing traditional local design features, but it has not reduced car use, as originally intended. A 2022 report said: "Poundbury has been highlighted for its pedestrian and public transport links and not being as 'car-based' as other developments across the country."

Poundbury Hill (grid reference SY682911) is the site of a scheduled Prehistoric and Roman archaeological remains and includes evidence of a Neolithic settlement, a substantial Bronze Age occupation site and an Iron Age hillfort. There are also late Iron Age burials and a section of Roman aqueduct. On the eastern side is an earlier Romano-British farmstead; and an extensive later (possibly Christian) cemetery, belonging to the Roman town Durnovaria. Further buildings and enclosures of the 5th-8th centuries overlie the Roman cemetery. It is roughly rectangular and it is likely that it was designed to command views over the River Frome and the Frome valley to the north. The main entrance to the fort is on the eastern end. It overlooks the county town of Dorchester, Dorset, England.

Stratton is a village and civil parish in Dorset, England, situated in the Frome valley about 3 miles (4.8 km) north-west of Dorchester. The parish includes the hamlets of Grimstone, Ash Hill and Wrackleford which, like the village, lie on or near the A37 trunk road. Ash Hill is a small estate east of the village near the railway. Wrackleford is a group of houses further east and centred about Wrackleford House and including Higher Wrackleford and Lower Wrackleford. In addition there are a number of isolated farms and houses including a few in an area called Langford near the Sydling Water in the north-west part of the parish. The name Stratton means 'Farm on the Street'. The Street referred to the Roman road from Durnovaria (Dorchester) to Lindinis (Ilchester) which passes through the village. The parish has an area of about 1,710 acres (690 ha). Most of this is agricultural land lying north of the village where the land rises from about 250 feet (76 m) to about 620 feet (190 m). Stratton parish is bounded by the parishes of Bradford Peverell, Frampton, Sydling St. Nicholas, Godmanstone and Charminster. In the 2011 census the parish had a population of 592.
