Bergh Apton

Bergh Apton Anglo-Saxon cemetery is a late-5th to late-6th century Anglo-Saxon burial site discovered at Bergh Apton, Norfolk. The site was excavated in 1973 and 63 graves were found. The south and west portions of the site had previously been destroyed. The state of preservation of the skeletal remains was described as "very poor" due to the acidity of the soil and the sex of individuals was determined by grave goods. Grave goods found at the site included weapons, shields, spears and jewellery. One grave, possibly of a minstrel-poet, was found to contain a lyre similar to that found at Sutton Hoo. Twelve of the graves were those of children aged under 12 years. No evidence for an Anglo-Saxon settlement adjacent to the cemetery has been found.The artefacts are currently held by Norwich Castle Museum.

Holverston is a civil parish in the county of Norfolk, England ¾ mile (1¼ km) southeast of Rockland St. Mary. It includes the 16th century Holverston Hall (reached from the A146 between Framingham Pigot and Thurton) and associated barn conversions reached by road from Hellington to the east. In the 2001 census it contained 9 households and a population of 29. All traces of the thatched, round towered church (St. Mary) had disappeared by 1845.

St John the Baptist's Church is a redundant Anglican church standing to the south of the village of Hellington, Norfolk, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Alpington is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is situated about six miles (10 km) south-east of Norwich and is closely associated with Yelverton just to the north. There is some confusion over Alpington's entries in the Domesday Book. Two entries call the village 'Appletuna' or 'Appletona', Old English for 'apple tree farm'. However, two further entries use the names 'Algamundestuna' and 'Alcmuntona', Old English for 'Ahlmund's enclosure'. These may relate to Alpington or to an unknown settlement close by.Ekwall suggests that it is "not impossible" that Apton, formerly part of the adjacent parish of Bergh Apton, is a reduced form of Appleton. So Apton may be linked to Alpington.The civil parish has an area of 2.18 square kilometres and in the 2001 census had a population of 460 in 199 households, increasing to 477 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of South Norfolk.The village has a village hall, primary school and a pub, the 'Wheel of Fortune'.Alpington and Yelverton are served by Ambassador Travel buses to Norwich and out to Seething and Loddon.

Hellington is a hamlet and civil parish in the South Norfolk district of the county of Norfolk, England. In the 2001 census, it contained 24 households and a population of 69.It is centred on a crossroads 1⁄2 mile (4⁄5 km) south of Rockland St. Mary and around 6+1⁄2 miles (10.5 km) southeast of Norwich. The road north leads to Rockland St. Mary, south leads to the church and to Hellington Corner on the A146. East and west from the crossroads are both no through roads. East leads to Hellington Hall, a Grade II Listed 17th-century country house, and Low Common, a Norfolk Wildlife Trust County Wildlife Site. West leads to Holverston.

Yelverton is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, situated some 5 miles (8.0 km) south east of Norwich and closely associated with Alpington.[1]The villages name probably means 'Geldfrith's farm/settlement'.The civil parish has an area of 2.21 km2 (0.85 sq mi) and had a population of 186 in 62 households in the 2001 census, the population falling to 173 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of South Norfolk.[2]The village itself is just south of the A146 (on which lies Yelverton Garage) and is contiguous with Alpington to the south with which it shares its facilities, which include a duckpond, village hall and St. Mary's church.

Brooke is a village and civil parish in the South Norfolk district of Norfolk, England, about 7 miles south of Norwich and roughly equidistant from Norwich and Bungay.

Rockland St Mary is a village in South Norfolk which lies about 6 miles (9½ km) southeast of Norwich between Surlingham, Bramerton, Claxton and Hellington. In the 2001 census it contained 325 households and a population of 824, falling to 810 at the 2011 Census. Although Rockland is part of South Norfolk District, those parts of the village lying adjacent to the river and broads fall under the administration of the Broads Authority. The Street (pictured) runs east to west through the centre of the village.

Thurton is a village in South Norfolk lying 8½ miles (13½ km) south-east of Norwich on the A146 Norwich to Lowestoft road between Framingham Pigot and Loddon. The A146 effectively divides the village in two; a 40 mph limit is in force. At the 2001 census and the 2011 Census Thurton had 223 households and a population of 567.Thurton is written 'Tortuna' in the Domesday Book. The suffix is the Anglo-Saxon 'tun', meaning an enclosed space. The prefix may refer to a thorn bush, or perhaps to the Anglo-Saxon god Thunor, whom the Normans called Thur. So Thurton may mean 'the place of the thorn bush' or 'Thor's enclosure'. The village no longer has a shop, post office or garage, all having closed. It has a pub, the George and Dragon which has darts and pool teams and sponsors the football team. It also provides the focus for the village's annual St George's Day celebrations and is often host to local bands. Opposite the pub is Thurton Foundry which was founded in 1963 and produces ferrous and non-ferrous castings. The village hosts a large classic car show and autojumble annually which raises significant money for local charities. The thatched parish church stands on a hill to the south of the village and is dedicated to St Ethelbert. Parts date from the Norman period. Thurton Primary School has around 90 children between the ages of 4–11.

Bramerton is a village in South Norfolk 4¾ miles (7½ km) south-east of Norwich, just north of the main A146 Norwich-Lowestoft road and on the south bank of the River Yare. In the 2001 census it contained 158 households and a population of 350, the population falling to 301 at the 2011 census.

Ashby St Mary, historically Ascebei, is a small village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The civil parish has an area of 2.03 square kilometres (0.78 sq mi) and in the 2001 census had a population of 297 in 115 households, the population increasing to 316 in 120 households at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of South Norfolk.The village contains a number of heritage-listed buildings, which include a 13th-century church, a War Memorial, and an early 18th Century Hall, Barn and Garden house.

Seething is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is around 8+1⁄2 miles (13.7 km) south-east of Norwich and 2+3⁄4 miles (4.4 km) west of Loddon in the South Norfolk district. Neighbouring parishes include Bergh Apton, Kirstead, Woodton, Hedenham and Mundham. The village lies to the west of the A146 Norwich to Lowestoft road and east of the B1332 Norwich to Bungay road. The parish covers an area of 6.78 km2 (2.62 sq mi) and had a population of 341 in 141 households at the 2001 census, with the population increasing to 365 at the 2011 Census.The parish church, which is dedicated to St Margaret and St Remigius, is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk.Seething Airfield, formerly RAF Seething, is to the south of the village. The area of the airfield is on the parish boundary, with most of the area of the current operation in the parish of Mundham. Seething Observatory, which is located on the airfield site, is within Mundham.
