North Buxton

The Buxton National Historic Site and Museum is a tribute to the Elgin Settlement (also known as the Buxton Mission, Raleigh, Kent County), established in 1849 by Reverend William King (1812–1895),: 40  and an association which included Lord Elgin, then the Governor General of Canada. King, a former slave owner turned abolitionist, purchased 9,000 acres (36 km2) of crown land in Southwestern Ontario and created a haven for fugitive slaves and free Blacks.: 41 King brought fifteen of his former slaves with him,: 11  where they could live a free life. The Elgin settlement was divided into 50-acre (200,000 m2) lots, intended with one house on each farm lot.: 40  These sold for $2.50/acre, with six percent interest, and could be paid over the course of ten years. By 1864, there was a steam grist mill, steam saw-mill, shoe shop, two general stores, a blacksmith, cooperage, school with forty students on average, and a church (24 by 32 feet (7.3 m × 9.8 m)) seating 200.: 40  For many fugitive slaves, the Buxton settlement was the final stop on the Underground Railroad from the United States – of the twenty-five terminal stations in Canada, seven were in the counties of Kent or Essex.: 11 The need for the mission was considered no longer and the Buxton Mission Fund was closed by 1865 when 'the liberty of the slaves was proclaimed' at the end of the American Civil War.: 42–43 Opened in 1967, the museum complex includes the main building with exhibits about the community and its history, an 1861 schoolhouse, an 1854 log cabin, and a barn. Local historic church cemeteries are adjacent to the museum. The museum is located in North Buxton, Ontario, near South Buxton in Chatham-Kent.

CFCO (630 AM) is a news, sports, and country music radio station located in Chatham-Kent, Ontario. The station, owned by London, Ontario-based Blackburn Radio, features a heavy local news commitment. CFCO is one of the few dedicated country stations on the AM dial in North America, as well as one of the few to do so in C-QUAM AM Stereo.

Kent County, area 2,458 km2 (949 sq mi) is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was created in 1792 and named by John Graves Simcoe in honour of the English County. The county is in an alluvial plain between Lake St. Clair, and Lake Erie, watered by two navigable streams, the Thames River and the Sydenham River. On January 1, 1998, the county, its townships, towns, and Chatham were amalgamated into the single-tier city of Chatham-Kent.

The Skirmish at McCrae's House was a small skirmish fought on December 15, 1813, during the War of 1812 near Chatham, Ontario, Canada.

The Chatham Memorial Arena is an ice hockey arena located in Chatham, Ontario, Canada built in 1949. The arena seats approximately 2,500 spectators and is the home to the Chatham Maroons of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. Located in a residential area on the south side of Chatham, the Memorial Arena has seen numerous renovations in the past ten years, the most recent addition being the installation of a larger, more modern score clock as well as improved lighting. The Chatham Memorial Arena is the largest sports venue in the municipality of Chatham-Kent. The facility houses ice hockey and figure skating in the winter and ball hockey in the summer. It is also an integral part of the annual Jaycee Fair festivities. Amenities in the venue are limited. With only two concession stands, one souvenir stand and single washrooms, the arena is outdated. However, the arena features a very rustic if not rough atmosphere, and the local fans do their best to add to this.

Chatham station is a train station in Chatham, Ontario, Canada, served by Via Rail trains running between Toronto and Windsor. The station is wheelchair accessible. The Canadian National Railways/VIA Rail Station at Chatham is a one-and-a-half-storey, brick railway station, built in 1879. It is located in a mixed commercial area, south of the city centre of Chatham-Kent . The formal recognition is confined to the railway station building itself.

Chatham-Kent (2021 population: 104,316) is a single-tier municipality in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is mostly rural, and its population centres are Chatham, Wallaceburg, Tilbury, Blenheim, Ridgetown, Wheatley and Dresden. The current Municipality of Chatham-Kent was created in 1998 by the amalgamation of Blenheim, Bothwell, Camden, the City of Chatham, the Township of Chatham, Dover, Dresden, Erie Beach, Erieau, Harwich, Highgate, Howard, Orford, Raleigh, Ridgetown, Duart, Thamesville, Tilbury East, Tilbury, Wallaceburg, Wheatley and Zone. The Chatham-Kent census division, which includes the independent Delaware Nation at Moraviantown First Nation, had a population of 102,042 in the 2016 census.

Ursuline College Chatham (UCC) is a Catholic secondary school in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada. The secondary school offers both English and French immersion. Among a student community of about 1350, it is the biggest Catholic secondary school in Chatham-Kent. UCC celebrates more than 150 years of a rich custom of Catholic, Christian training and education. Angela Merici (1474-1540), the organizer of the Ursuline Sisters, was particularly intrigued by the education of children. One of her devotees, Mother Mary Xavier Le Bihan travelled from France to establish a minor pioneer township, Chatham. Referred to later as Ursuline College, this school for young ladies, from 1860 to 1971, attracted students from all across Canada, the United States, and Latin America. In 1972, the school became co-instructive and, in 1973, the school gave a Catholic secondary school training for young men and young ladies from all edges of Chatham-Kent.

Prairie Siding is a small farming community located in Southwestern Ontario. It lies north of the shores of Lake Erie. It supports one of the bridges across the Thames River for Southwestern Ontario.

The Chatham Jail was an adult prison located at 17 7th Ave at the corner of Stanley Ave in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. The jail closed May 16, 2014. The Chatham Jail along with the Windsor Jail were replaced by the South West Detention Centre in Maidstone (Windsor) Ontario.

Chatham-Kent Secondary School is located in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada. With a student population of about 1200, it is the largest public secondary school in Chatham-Kent operating at 85% capacity. The school is currently undergoing multi-million dollar renovations. The student population is projected to increase with further school consolidations, and the potential closure of John McGregor Secondary School.

The Lambton Kent District School Board (known as English-language Public District School Board No. 10 prior to 1999) is the school board responsible for public education in Lambton County and Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada. Lambton and Kent Counties are made up of numerous small towns and communities situated in Southwestern Ontario, a geographic area surrounded by the Great Lakes. The board serves over 21,000 elementary and high school students. Surrounding towns and communities include Alvinston, Blenheim, Bothwell, Brigden, Chatham, Corunna, Dresden, Forest, Grand Bend, Merlin, Mooretown, Petrolia, Point Edward, Ridgetown, Sarnia, Thamesville, Tilbury, Wallaceburg, Watford, Wheatley, and Wyoming.
