New Kent Road is a 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) road in the London Borough of Southwark. The road was created in 1751 when the Turnpike Trust upgraded a local footpath. This was done as part of the general road improvements associated with the creation of Westminster Bridge; in effect it was possible to travel from the West End/ Westminster to the south-east without having to go via the Borough of Southwark but could now cross St George's Fields to the junction of Newington Causeway and Newington Butts which is where New Kent Road starts at Elephant and Castle. The route runs eastward for a few hundred yards to the junction of Great Dover Street and Tower Bridge Road, known as Bricklayers Arms, where it joins the original route to the south-east Old Kent Road (the A2). The road forms part of the London Inner Ring Road and as such forms part of the boundary of the London congestion charge zone. New Kent Road is designated the A201 which, to the north-west past the Elephant and Castle, becomes London Road. In 1878, historian Edward Walford noted that the New Kent Road was formerly named Greenwich Road, and explained that "[it] is a broad and open roadway; it has been lately planted on either side with trees, so that in course of time it will doubtless form a splendid boulevard, of the Parisian type, and one worthy of being copied in many other parts of London."The 1955 Survey of London still maintained that "[the] road also has a spaciousness lacking in many of its 19th-century counterparts, for the 1751 Act stipulated that the road should be not less than 42 feet (13 m) wide and many of the older houses still retain their front gardens." Just a few older houses still remain, mostly on the south side.

Driscoll House is a building at 172 New Kent Road, London, England, which has operated as a hostel since 1913. The building is on the south side of New Kent Road, between the Bricklayers Arms flyover and Elephant and Castle station, and is a well-detailed example of the pre-World War I institutional Baroque style.

Merrick Square is a garden square in Newington, London. The square is named after Christopher Merrick who in 1661 left land to Trinity House. There are 32 houses that were built from 1853 to 1872, and they overlook a private garden in the centre, which is still enclosed by its original 19th-century cast-iron railings.In 1861, the cricketer Alfred Mynn died at his brother's house at 22 Merrick Square.

The Surrey Dispensary was founded in 1777 to administer advice and medicine to the poor of the Borough of Southwark and places adjacent. It was once one of the largest dispensaries in south London.

Great Dover Street is a road in Southwark, south London, England. At the northwest end it joins Marshalsea Road and Borough High Street and there is a junction with Long Lane; Borough Underground station is at this location. At the southeast end is the Bricklayers Arms roundabout and flyover. The road is part of the A2 and this continues south-east as the Old Kent Road.

The Roebuck is a Grade II listed public house at 50 Great Dover Street, Southwark, London SE1 4YG.It was built in the late 19th century.

Trinity Church Square, formerly known as Trinity Square, is a garden square in Newington in the London Borough of Southwark. Trinity Church, in the centre of the square, has been the classical music rehearsal and recording venue Henry Wood Hall for nearly 50 years. It was built in 1824, and from 1826 to 1968 served as the parish church of the parish of Holy Trinity. It was declared redundant in 1968 and converted into an orchestral venue in 1975. The statue of a king on the stone plinth in the square is Grade II listed. The statue was speculated to be one of eight medieval statues from the north end towers of Westminster Hall (c. late 14th century) or, alternatively, one of a pair representing Alfred the Great and Edward, the Black Prince made for the garden of Carlton House in the 18th century. Analysis in 2021 showed that the top part was of Coade stone but the legs were Roman and of Bath stone.John Belcher lived at no 60 from 1849 to 1852, with his father, also an architect called John Belcher. They had previously lived nearby at 3 Montague Terrace (now 8 Brockham Street), where Belcher was born in 1841.The publisher and bookseller William Tegg (1816–95), son of Thomas Tegg (1776–1845), lived at no 11 from 1848 to 1852.The English Congregationalist divine Thomas Binney lived at no 40 from 1831 to 1832, and later lived at no 5.

The Henry Wood Hall is an orchestral rehearsal and recording studio in Trinity Church Square, Southwark, London, named after the conductor Sir Henry Wood. Formerly the Holy Trinity Church, it was designed in 1823–24 by Francis Octavius Bedford.In 1970, The London Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras, carried out an assessment of various churches in London with a view to creating a new permanent orchestral rehearsal studio in London. Following their research into disused churches, the Holy Trinity Church in Southwark was identified and subsequently opened in 1975. The hall was named after Sir Henry Wood, an English conductor best known for his association with London's annual series of promenade concerts, informally known as the Proms, after receiving a substantial donation from the Henry Wood Fund (set up to rebuild the blitzed Queen's Hall).Visiting orchestras include the St Petersburg Philharmonic and the Japan Philharmonic which have recorded and rehearsed at the venue with many others.

The Heygate Estate was a large housing estate in Walworth, Southwark, South London comprising 1,214 homes. The estate was demolished between 2011 and 2014 as part of the urban regeneration of the Elephant & Castle area. Home to more than 3,000 people, it was situated adjacent to Walworth Road and New Kent Road, and immediately east of the Elephant & Castle road intersection. The estate was used extensively as a filming location, due in part to its brutalist architecture. The clearance of the site and its sale to Lendlease for redevelopment was highly controversial.

The statue of Alfred the Great in Southwark is thought to be London's oldest outdoor statue. The lower portion comes from a Roman statue dating to the late 1st or early 2nd century AD, while the top portion is a late 18th- or early 19th-century Coade stone addition in medieval style.

Newington Gardens is located on Harper Road in Southwark, London, England. To the north-west is the Inner London Sessions House, a Crown Court. Its area is 1.697 hectares (4.19 acres). The park occupies part of the site of an old prison that was closed in 1878. The park was opened by Catherine Gladstone, wife of the then prime minister, on 5 May 1884.The park occupies the site where Horsemonger Lane Gaol was located for almost a century from 1791. Designed by George Gwilt the Elder, architect surveyor to the county of Surrey, this was once the largest prison in the county. The MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area) courts in the park are regularly used by the London Hardcourt Bicycle Polo Association for casual games and tournaments. Newington Gardens is the burial place of Lieutenant Thomas Beauclerk, who committed suicide in Horsemonger's Gaol on 27 / 28 November 1832 and he was buried in the vicinity of Horsemonger's Gaol. He was committed to the prison to await trial on a charge of sodomy.

Horsemonger Lane Gaol (also known as the Surrey County Gaol or the New Gaol) was a prison close to present-day Newington Causeway in Southwark, south London. Built at the end of the 18th century, it was in use until 1878.
