Fritton Lake

Ashby is a former civil parish in the north of the English county of Suffolk. It is 5+1⁄2 miles (8.9 km) north-west of Lowestoft in the East Suffolk district. The parish was combined with Somerleyton and Herringfleet to form the combined parish of Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet in 1987.The estimated population of Ashby was around 50 at the 2011 United Kingdom census. There is no village centre, with the population spread across a number of scattered farms and small settlements. The area has always been sparsely populated, with the former parish population never exceeding 110. At the 1981 United Kingdom census it had a population of 42.The county border with Norfolk is immediately north of Ashby. Fritton Decoy marks the northern border, with the Norfolk parishes of Belton with Browston and Fritton and St Olaves bordering Ashby. To the east it borders the Suffolk parish of Lound, with Herringfleet and Somerleyton to the west and south. Much of the land within the area of the former parish is owned by the Somerleyton Estate.

Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet is a civil parish in the north of the English county of Suffolk. It is 5 miles (8.0 km) north-west of Lowestoft and the same distance south-west of Great Yarmouth and is in the East Suffolk district. The parish is made up of the villages of Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet and at the 2011 United Kingdom census had a population of 427.The three villages were each a separate parish until 1987 when they were combined into the current parish.The parish is on the county border with Norfolk, with the western border formed by the River Waveney and the north by Fritton Decoy. It borders the Suffolk parishes of Blundeston and Lound and the Norfolk parishes of Burgh St Peter, Wheatacre, Aldeby and Haddiscoe across the Waveney and the parishes of Fritton and St Olaves and Belton with Browston to the north.The village of St Olaves was formerly part of the parish of Herringfleet until local government reorganisation in 1974 redrew the county boundary. Prior to this the entire area south and east of the Waveney, including Fritton and the three parishes which make up the modern parish of Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet, was part of Suffolk.

Herringfleet is a place and former civil parish in the north of the English county of Suffolk. It is located 5.5 miles (8.9 km) north-west of Lowestoft in the East Suffolk district. The parish was combined with Somerleyton and Ashby to create the parish of Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet in 1987.The western edge of Herringfleet is marked by the River Waveney. Prior to local government reorganisation in 1974, the former parish included the village of St Olaves to the north. This was combined with the parish of Fritton and the new parish of Fritton and St Olaves transferred to the county of Norfolk. Previously the entire area south and east of the Waveney was part of Suffolk.Prior to the loss of St Olaves, the population of the former parish was 262 at the 1961 United Kingdom census. At the 1981 census it was 58 and the current population of Herringfleet is estimated to be around 50. There is no village centre, with the population spread across a number of scattered farms and small settlements. Much of the land within the area of the former parish is owned by the Somerleyton Estate.

Fritton is a village and former civil parish in county of Norfolk, England. The village is located 6 miles (9.7 km) south-west of Great Yarmouth and 16 miles (26 km) south-east of Norwich, along the A143 between Gorleston-on-Sea and Haverhill. In 1961 the parish had a population of 192.

Belton & Burgh was a station in the Norfolk village of Belton on the outskirts of Great Yarmouth but also served the village of Burgh Castle about 3.5 km away. It once saw trains on the main line from Yarmouth South Town to London, but was closed in 1959 as part of a major re-evaluation of the British Railways network. It was on a connecting branch between Great Yarmouth and Beccles.The site of the station can still be located. It is now a modern house where Station Road South meets Station Road North. A notable bump in the road signifies where the track once crossed. The station was on the left, travelling north to south, with the house having a "Platform 3" sign hanging by the driveway. On the right, an access road to a camp site is on the old track bed going off towards St. Olaves.

Belton with Browston is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. Historically part of Suffolk, the parish consists of the villages of Belton and Browston Green, and is situated some 5 miles (8 km) south-west of the town of Great Yarmouth and 61⁄4 miles (10 km) north-west of the Suffolk town of Lowestoft.[1]The civil parish has an area of 3.23 square miles (8.36 square km) and in the 2001 census had a population of 4,098 in 1,589 households, the population reducing to 3,805 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish today falls within the district of Great Yarmouth. However prior to the Local Government Act 1972, the parish was within Lothingland Rural District in Suffolk[2][3]. It is connected to Yarmouth by bus services 6B and 7 and to Norwich by the X11 service, operated by First Norfolk & Suffolk.

Somerleyton is a village and former civil parish in the north of the English county of Suffolk. It is 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north-west of Lowestoft and 5.5 miles (8.9 km) south-west of Great Yarmouth in the East Suffolk district. The village is closely associated with Somerleyton Hall and was largely rebuilt as a model village in the 19th century at the direction of Samuel Morton Peto. The parish was combined with Herringfleet and Ashby to create the parish of Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet in 1987.The village is on the edge of The Broads national park with the River Waveney forming the western boundary of the former parish. This forms the county border with Norfolk and the Suffolk village of Blundeston is to the east. The village has a population of around 300.

Fritton and St Olaves is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The parish comprises the villages of Fritton and St. Olaves, together with the surrounding rural area.The civil parish has an area of 7.63 km2 (2.95 sq mi) and in the 2001 census had a population of 543 in 236 households, the population reducing to 524 at the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government, the parish today falls within the district of Great Yarmouth. Prior to the 1974 reorganisation of counties in England the entire area of the parish was part of the Lothingland Rural District of Suffolk, with the St Olaves portion of the parish of Herringfleet and Fritton as a separate parish.

Lound Mill is a tower mill at Lound in the English county of Suffolk which has been converted to residential accommodation.

Somerleyton Hall is a country house and 5,000-acre (2,000 ha) estate near Somerleyton and Lowestoft in Suffolk, England owned and lived in by Hugh Crossley, 4th Baron Somerleyton, originally designed by John Thomas. The hall is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England, and its landscaped park and formal gardens are also Grade II* listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. The formal gardens cover 12 acres (4.9 ha). Inspired by Knepp Wildland, Somerleyton is rewilding 1,000 acres (400 ha) of the estate to which he has introduced free-roaming cattle, large black pigs and Exmoor ponies.

Somerleyton Swing Bridge is a railway swing bridge over the River Waveney on the Norfolk-Suffolk border. It was built in 1905 to carry the double tracked Norwich to Lowestoft Line over the river, replacing a previous single tracked bridge. It is 400 metres (1,300 ft) west of Somerleyton railway station and near to the Suffolk village of Somerleyton. It is one of only four remaining railway swing bridges crossing rivers in The Broads.

Somerleyton railway station is on the Wherry Lines in the east of England, serving the village of Somerleyton, Suffolk. It is 18 miles (29 km) down the line from Norwich on the route to Lowestoft, and is less than 2 miles (3.2 km) from Somerleyton Hall on foot. Its three-letter station code is SYT.The station is managed by Greater Anglia, which also operates all of the trains that call. In The Rings of Saturn, the author W. G. Sebald describes travelling by train from Norwich and crossing the line to walk to Somerleyton Hall.
