Fritton, Great Yarmouth

Fritton and St Olaves is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The parish comprises the villages of Fritton and St. Olaves, together with the surrounding rural area.The civil parish has an area of 7.63 km2 (2.95 sq mi) and in the 2001 census had a population of 543 in 236 households, the population reducing to 524 at the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government, the parish today falls within the district of Great Yarmouth. Prior to the 1974 reorganisation of counties in England the entire area of the parish was part of the Lothingland Rural District of Suffolk, with the St Olaves portion of the parish of Herringfleet and Fritton as a separate parish.

St Olaves was a station in St. Olaves. It was on the Great Eastern Railway between Great Yarmouth and London. It was first opened in June 1859. After just over a century it was closed in November 1959 when the connection it stood on was cut, and services transferred to another route to make roughly the same journey. Today St Olaves is most closely served by Haddiscoe railway station, which is over the two rivers which separate the two villages.

Herringfleet Priory (also St Olave's Priory) was an Augustinian priory of Black Canons located in St Olaves, 6 miles (9.7 km) north-west of Lowestoft in eastern England. The site is in the county of Norfolk, although prior to 1974 it was part of the former Suffolk parish of Herringfleet. Founded in 1239, the priory was situated near the ancient ferry across the River Waveney. The priory of SS. Mary and Olave was founded by Sir Roger Fitz Osbert of Somerley in the time of Henry III. The remains consist of the undercroft, two aisles of the Lady Chapel, and the refectory, now a barn.The original dedication was to "St Olave, The Blessed Virgin Mary, and St Edmund, King and Martyr". Saint Olaf was King of Norway. He was born ca. 995 AD and Christianised Norway. In Suffolk, there was no other dedication to Saint Olaf, but two in Norfolk, and over fifty in the rest of England, with six in London. On 20 August 1536, Sir Humphrey Wingfield, the Commissioner for the Dissolution of the Monasteries arrived, and on 16 January 1546 Henry VIII made over the priory site to a local man, Sir Henry Jerningham of Somerleyton. Now in ruins, it gives its name to St. Olave's Bridge, over the Waveney, replacing a very ancient ferry, and also to a modern railway-junction.The Priory was allowed to hold an annual fair on St Olave's Day, 29 July. It was also given the lordship over Herringfleet and Burgh St Peter. The area has been excavated and several burials in the Canons' cemetery discovered. It is now in the guardianship of English Heritage.

St Olaves is a village in the English county of Norfolk. The village is situated on the River Waveney, 6 miles (10 km) south-west of the town of Great Yarmouth and the same distance north-west of the Suffolk town of Lowestoft. It is within The Broads national park.Today the village forms part of the civil parish of Fritton and St Olaves, which in turn is within the district of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. Prior to local government reorganisation in 1974 however, the village was part of the parish of Herringfleet in the Lothingland Rural District of Suffolk.St Olaves Bridge, a suspension bridge, is the first bridging point on the Waveney above Great Yarmouth. Haddiscoe railway station, on the Wherry Lines service between Norwich and Lowestoft, is across the bridge approximately 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) from the centre of the village. St Olaves used to have its own railway station, which closed in 1959. The village is the location of the remains of a 13th-century Augustinian priory. St. Olaves Priory was dedicated to St Olav. On the site there are parts of the refectory, cloisters, and the priory mill.

The Yarmouth–Beccles line was a railway line which linked the Suffolk market town of Beccles with the Norfolk coastal resort of Yarmouth. Forming part of the East Suffolk Railway, the line was opened in 1859 and closed 100 years later in 1959.

Haddiscoe High Level was a railway station in Haddiscoe, Norfolk serving the now closed Yarmouth-Beccles Line. It obtained its name due to its close proximity to Haddiscoe railway station which served the Wherry Lines. The station was closed in 1959 at the same time as the line it served.

Haddiscoe railway station (formerly Haddiscoe Low Level) is on the Wherry Lines in Norfolk, England, named after the village of Haddiscoe, some 2 miles (3.2 km) distant, although the village of St Olaves on the other side of the River Waveney is closer.[1] It is 16 miles 11 chains (26 km) down the line from Norwich on the route to Lowestoft and is situated between Reedham and Somerleyton. Its three-letter station code is HAD. It is managed by Greater Anglia, which also operates all trains serving the station. Haddiscoe station is remote, positioned as it is at the end of a minor road, though it does have a car park.

Herringfleet Mill or Walker's Mill is a Grade II* listed smock mill at Herringfleet, Suffolk, England, Now in a bad state of repair with two of the 4 sails removed.

This was the original Haddiscoe railway station serving Haddiscoe, Norfolk. It was opened in 1847 by the Norfolk Railway and closed in 1904. Upon closure it was replaced by Haddiscoe Low Level railway station which was later renamed Haddiscoe railway station and remains open. There was also a station nearby on a higher level known as Herringfleet Junction which later became Haddiscoe High Level and closed in 1959.

Fritton Lake or Fritton Decoy is a lake on the border of the English counties of Norfolk and Suffolk close to the towns of Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. It is located within the parishes of Fritton and St Olaves and Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet. A private member's club operates on the Fritton side of the lake, owned by the Somerleyton Estate.Peter Scott lived in a cottage rented from 2nd Lord Somerleyton on the north bank of Fritton Lake during the 1930s.

Herringfleet is a place and former civil parish in the north of the English county of Suffolk. It is located 5.5 miles (8.9 km) north-west of Lowestoft in the East Suffolk district. The parish was combined with Somerleyton and Ashby to create the parish of Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet in 1987.The western edge of Herringfleet is marked by the River Waveney. Prior to local government reorganisation in 1974, the former parish included the village of St Olaves to the north. This was combined with the parish of Fritton and the new parish of Fritton and St Olaves transferred to the county of Norfolk. Previously the entire area south and east of the Waveney was part of Suffolk.Prior to the loss of St Olaves, the population of the former parish was 262 at the 1961 United Kingdom census. At the 1981 census it was 58 and the current population of Herringfleet is estimated to be around 50. There is no village centre, with the population spread across a number of scattered farms and small settlements. Much of the land within the area of the former parish is owned by the Somerleyton Estate.

Belton & Burgh was a station in the Norfolk village of Belton on the outskirts of Great Yarmouth but also served the village of Burgh Castle about 3.5 km away. It once saw trains on the main line from Yarmouth South Town to London, but was closed in 1959 as part of a major re-evaluation of the British Railways network. It was on a connecting branch between Great Yarmouth and Beccles.The site of the station can still be located. It is now a modern house where Station Road South meets Station Road North. A notable bump in the road signifies where the track once crossed. The station was on the left, travelling north to south, with the house having a "Platform 3" sign hanging by the driveway. On the right, an access road to a camp site is on the old track bed going off towards St. Olaves.
