The Socialist Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Socijalistička Republika Hrvatska), or SR Croatia, was a constituent republic and federated state of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. By its constitution, modern-day Croatia is its direct continuation. Along with five other Yugoslav republics, it was formed during World War II and became a socialist republic after the war. It had four full official names during its 48-year existence (see below). By territory and population, it was the second largest republic in Yugoslavia, after the Socialist Republic of Serbia. In 1990, the government dismantled the single-party system of government – installed by the League of Communists – and adopted a multi-party democracy. The newly elected government of Franjo Tuđman moved the republic towards independence, formally seceding from Yugoslavia in 1991 and thereby contributing to its dissolution.

Zagreb County (Croatian: Zagrebačka županija; Hungarian: Zágráb vármegye) was a historic administrative subdivision (županija) of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia. Croatia-Slavonia was an autonomous kingdom within the Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen (Transleithania), the Hungarian part of the dual Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its territory is now in northern Croatia. The capital of the county was Zagreb (Croatian, in Hungarian: Zágráb).

The Banovina of Croatia or Banate of Croatia (Serbo-Croatian: Banovina Hrvatska / Бановина Хрватска) was an autonomous province (banovina) of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia between 1939 and 1941. It was formed by a merger of Sava and Littoral banovinas into a single autonomous entity, with small parts of the Drina, Zeta, and Danube banovinas also included. Its capital was Zagreb and it included most of present-day Croatia along with portions of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Its sole Ban during this period was Ivan Šubašić.

Zagreb ( ZAH-greb, ZAG-reb, zah-GREB, Croatian: [zǎːɡreb] (listen)) is the capital and largest city of Croatia. It is in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. Zagreb lies at an elevation of approximately 122 m (400 ft) above sea level. The population of the city in 2021 was 769,944. The population of the Zagreb urban agglomeration is 1,071,150, approximately a quarter of the total population of Croatia. Zagreb is a city with a rich history dating from Roman times. The oldest settlement in the vicinity of the city was the Roman Andautonia, in today's Ščitarjevo. The name "Zagreb" is recorded in 1134, in reference to the foundation of the settlement at Kaptol in 1094. Zagreb became a free royal city in 1242. In 1851, Zagreb had its first mayor, Janko Kamauf. Zagreb has special status as a Croatian administrative division and is a consolidated city-county (but separated from Zagreb County), and is administratively subdivided into 17 city districts. Most of them are at a low elevation along the river Sava valley, whereas northern and northeastern city districts, such as Podsljeme and Sesvete districts are situated in the foothills of the Medvednica mountain, making the city's geographical image rather diverse. The city extends over 30 kilometres (19 miles) east-west and around 20 kilometres (12 miles) north-south.Zagreb is considered a global city with a Beta-rating from the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.The transport connections, concentration of industry, scientific, and research institutions and industrial tradition underlie its leading economic position in Croatia. Zagreb is the seat of the central government, administrative bodies, and almost all government ministries. Almost all of the largest Croatian companies, media, and scientific institutions have their headquarters in the city. Zagreb is the most important transport hub in Croatia where Central Europe, the Mediterranean and Southeast Europe meet, making the Zagreb area the centre of the road, rail and air networks of Croatia. It is a city known for its diverse economy, high quality of living, museums, sporting, and entertainment events. Its main branches of economy are high-tech industries and the service sector.

Trnjanska Savica or just Savica is a neighbourhood of Zagreb, Croatia, located on the left (northern) bank of Sava river, west of Folnegovićevo naselje and east of Staro Trnje, in the city district of Trnje. The neighbourhood covers an area of 76.8 hectares (190 acres) and, according to the 2011 census, has a population of 8,449 people.Savica was built according to the socialist model of a functional neighbourhood, which is planned to fulfill all day-to-day needs of its inhabitants. Construction of high-rise apartment buildings in Savica is still ongoing, mostly in the southeastern part of the neighbourhood. The neighbourhood is served by the Jure Kaštelan Elementary School, Savica Farmer's Market, Savica Library and State Geodetic Directorate of Croatia, and belongs to the Parish of blessed Aloysius Stepinac.

The Dinamo Zagreb–Red Star Belgrade riot was a football riot which took place on 13 May 1990 at Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb, SR Croatia, then part of SFR Yugoslavia, between the Bad Blue Boys (supporters of Dinamo Zagreb) and the Delije (supporters of Red Star Belgrade). The incident took place just weeks after Croatia's first multi-party elections in almost fifty years in which the parties favouring Croatian independence had won the majority of votes. The riot resulted in over sixty people wounded, including some stabbed, shot or poisoned by tear gas.

Croatian Catholic Radio (Croatian: Hrvatski katolički radio, HKR) is a non-profit Croatian radio station with a statewide concession. The founder and owner of the radio station is the Croatian Bishops' Conference. The station started broadcasting on May 17, 1997 when it was blessed by the Cardinal Franjo Kuharić, then president of the Croatian Bishops' Conference.

Šalata (pronounced [ʃaˈlata]) is an upper-class residential neighborhood in Zagreb, Croatia. It is administratively part of the Gornji Grad - Medveščak city district in the northern part of Zagreb and it has a population of 1,929.Šalata houses the Šalata Sport and Recreation Center (ŠRC Šalata) and the University Hospital Centre Zagreb (KBC Zagreb). The neighborhood is located east of Medveščak Road, the main thoroughfare of its parent city district, on the gentle slopes of the Medvednica. Due to its hilly nature, Šalata is approximately 40 to 70 meters (130 to 230 ft) above downtown Zagreb.The residents of Šalata are close to almost all major events outside the neighborhoods due to their proximity to both the old city cores of Gornji Grad and Kaptol, and the current center, Donji Grad. Šalata is praised for great views of the city because of its higher altitude in relation to the rest of the city and its position on some of the southernmost hills of Medvednica. Due to these factors, real estate in Šalata is relatively expensive compared with other districts, which made it become home to many influential people from the political, musical and sports scene in Croatia.

The Mala Scena Theatre is a theatre in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. It is credited as Croatia's leading theatre for children. It is also the oldest private theatre for young audiences in Croatia. In 1996, the first Croatian president Franjo Tuđman awarded the founders Vitomir Lončar and Ivica Šimić with the Order of Danica with the figure of Marko Marulić for special merits to culture. In 2009, the theatre received the City of Zagreb Plaque for its work.In March 2020 the Mala Scena and the Croatian National Theatre announced they would "transfer cultural content from the theatre to the virtual world" in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported by HRT. In the midst of the pandemic it received some financial support from the state.In recent years the theatre suffered several setbacks, including three bankruptcies, but always managed to get back to its feet. Founded in 1989, the theatre has had 126 premieres and 1,200,000 visitors in thirty years, winning a total of 95 awards.

The Archdiocesan Classic Gymnasium (Croatian: Nadbiskupska klasična gimnazija s pravom javnosti, often referred to by the abbreviation NKG) is a Catholic high school located on 106 Voćarska Road in the neighborhood of Šalata in Zagreb, Croatia. The school implements a program highlighting the classical culture and history, having students learn the Latin and the Ancient Greek. The school promotes Catholicism and serves as a public preparatory school for the Interdiocesan Boys' Seminary, a seminary for future Catholic priests located in the same building complex.

The assassination of Ivo Pukanić happened on 23 October 2008 in Zagreb, Croatia, when a remote-detonation car bomb fitted on a motorcycle outside the Nacional newspaper's premises killed the owner of the newspaper, Ivo Pukanić, and Niko Franjić, its marketing manager, and injured two more people. The explosion occurred in the centre of the capital at 18:10 local time (16:10 GMT). Numerous arrests of suspects around the country followed. A subsequent police investigation accused Croatian and Serbian organized crime groups of perpetrating the bombing. Eight people suspected of having connections to organised crime groups were indicted. Six were later convicted over the murders with prison terms ranging from 15 to 40 years.

The Croatian National Bank (Croatian: Hrvatska narodna banka or HNB; pronounced [xř̩ʋaːtskaː nǎːrodnaː bâːŋka]) is the central bank of the Republic of Croatia. HNB was established by the Constitution of Croatia which was passed by the Parliament of Croatia on 21 December 1990. Its main responsibilities are maintaining the stability of the national currency, the kuna, and ensuring general financial liquidity within the country. HNB also issues banknotes and holds the national monetary reserves. In performing its duties HNB acts as an independent institution responsible to the Parliament. The bank has a share capital of 2,500,000,000 Croatian kunas (c. US$ 450 million). HNB acts in accordance with Law on Croatian National Bank.
