São Paulo State University

The State University of Campinas (Portuguese: Universidade Estadual de Campinas), commonly called Unicamp, is a public research university in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Established in 1962, Unicamp was designed from scratch as an integrated research center unlike other top Brazilian universities, usually created by the consolidation of previously existing schools and institutes. Its research focus reflects on almost half of its students being graduate students, the largest proportion across all large universities in Brazil, and also in the large number of graduate programs it offers: 153 compared to 70 undergraduate programs. It also offers several non-degree granting open-enrollment courses to around 8,000 students through its extension school.Its main campus occupies 3.5 square kilometres (860 acres) located in the district of Barão Geraldo, a suburban area 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) from the downtown center of Campinas, built shortly after the creation of the university. It also has satellite campuses in Limeira, Piracicaba and Paulínia, and manages two technical high schools located in Campinas and Limeira. Funding is provided almost entirely by the state government and, like other Brazilian public universities, no tuition fees or administrative fees are charged for undergraduate and graduate programs.Unicamp is responsible for around 15% of Brazilian research, a disproportionately high number when compared to much larger and older institutions in the country such as the University of São Paulo. It also produces more patents than any other research organization in Brazil, being second only to the state-owned oil company, Petrobras.

The Instituto de Economia da Universidade Estadual de Campinas is an academic unit of the State University of Campinas, located in the main campus of the University, in Barão Geraldo, Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Originally created as a research institute within the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH in Portuguese) of the State University of Campinas, it is today one of the most important public policy think-tanks in economics and related areas in Brazil. It is also a great supplier of policy makers in the country, such as: Celso Furtado, influential economist in the country, Aloizio Mercadante (Senator, SP), Luciano G.Coutinho (recently appointed as chairman of BNDES), José Serra (governor of São Paulo) and many others. It offers one undergraduate major in Economics (BA Economics), many specialization courses (in Management, International Relations and Diplomacy, Labour Economics and Banking), and two Masters programs (Development Economics and Economic Theory) and one Ph.D. program.

The School of Mechanical Engineering (Portuguese: Faculdade de Engenharia Mecânica, FEM) is one of the colleges at the State University of Campinas in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in mechanical engineering and mechatronics. FEM is one of the most highly regarded schools for mechanical engineering and mechatronics in both Brazil and Latin America, as well being ranked the highest on the CAPES evaluation.

Arquivo Edgard Leuenroth is a historical and media archive that is maintained by the Brazilian State University of Campinas (Universidade Estadual de Campinas—Unicamp), located in the city of Campinas in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. It was started by a donation of the media collection assembled by Brazilian anarchist journalist and publisher Edgard Leuenroth (1881–1968).The Arquivo Edgard Leuenroth has the largest collection of materials regarding social movements, counterculture, and other alternative cultural movements in Brazil. This collection is, therefore, very much appreciated by researchers from all over the world, because it presents a non-official view and understanding of Brazil in the twentieth century. Among others, the Feminist Movement (or Movimento Feminista) and the Homosexual Movement (or Movimento Homossexual, in this case, the Grupo Gay da Bahia), are among the many collections being maintained by the Arquivo Edgard Leuenroth of the State University of Campinas. The collection includes 280,000 documents, 28,000 books, 854 videos, 289 films, 1,419 audio recordings and 45,000 photographs.

The Hospital das Clínicas da Unicamp (Clinics Hospital of the University of Campinas, in Portuguese language) is a teaching hospital (Hospital das Clínicas) located in the city of Campinas, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The largest public hospital in the region, it serves a population around 3.5 million people. It is a tertiary hospital, with all the medical specialties and medico-surgical services represented. It offers a total of more than 600 beds.

The School of Medical Sciences (Portuguese: Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, FCM) is a college of the State University of Campinas, located in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. It offers courses at the undergraduate level in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and speech therapy, as well as courses at graduate and postgraduate level (specialization, master's, doctorate, and medical residency). Affiliated clinical centers are the Clinics Hospital, the Hospital of Sumaré, the Center for Women Integral Health Care (CAISM), the Gastroenterology Center, the Pediatrics Center, the Haemocenter of Campinas, and several others. It has also a nucleus of experimental medical research. The School is considered one of the foremost Brazilian excellence centers in teaching, research and health care services.

Barão Geraldo (Portuguese pronunciation: [baˈɾɐ̃w ɡeˈɾawdu]) is a district of the municipality of Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. It is named after Barão Geraldo de Rezende, a baron of the Empire of Brazil who owned a large farm in the region, in the 19th century. Barão Geraldo is approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) from downtown Campinas and it is mainly connected to it via the Rodovia Campinas-Paulínia highway. Barão Geraldo is famous for hosting the main campus of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). The university campus is surrounded by typical suburban communities, the Cidade Universitária Campineira, so named because many professors and a large number of students reside there; as well as by gated condominiums, such as Rio das Pedras, Barao do Cafe and Santa Eudoxia, and many old farms, such as Pau D'Alho, Santa Eudóxia, Rio das Pedras and Santa Genebra. The University itself and the surrounding residential communities were built on a former coffee and sugarcane plantation. Barão Geraldo is one of the greenest districts of Campinas. It has several lakes and the Mata of Santa Genebra, a large preservation area where the original rain forest which covered the region in the past can be seen and is studied by the University. It still has a large diversity of plants and animals, including the capybara and the spotted jaguars. Near UNICAMP, the district hosts also a large high-tech industrial zone (with several companies, such as Nortel); three research and development institutions; the Centro de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento em Telecomunicações (CPqD), in telecommunications and information technology; and the Laboratório Nacional de Luz Síncrotron and the Instituto Eldorado. It is considered the main part of the so-called Brazilian Silicon Valley. The expansion of its technological park has attracted other institutions, which are planned to settle in Barão Geraldo in the near future, such as the Technological Center of the Brazilian Army, the Research and Development Center of Natura cosmetics company and others. Barão Geraldo is also a major health care destination in the state, with the large University Clinics Hospital, the Centro Médico de Campinas, the Centro Infantil Domingos A. Boldrini (a children's cancer hospital), and the Centro de Oncologia Campinas (a cancer treatment polyclinic). The district has a sub-mayor and has about 45,000 inhabitants living in 70 sections.

Sirius is a diffraction-limited storage ring synchrotron light source at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil. It has a circumference of 518.4 metres (1,701 ft), a diameter of 165 metres (541 ft), and an electron energy of 3 GeV. The produced synchrotron radiation covers the range of infrared, optical, ultraviolet and X-ray light.Costing R$1.8 billion, it was funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (Brazil) and the São Paulo Research Foundation. Discussion started in 2008, and initial funding of R$2 million was granted in 2009. Construction started in 2015, and was finished in 2018. The first electron loop around the storage ring was achieved in November 2019. Its first experiments were made during COVID-19 pandemic at MANACÁ beamline, dedicated to macromolecular crystallography.Sirius is the second synchrotron lightsource constructed in Brazil. The first one, UVX, was a second generation machine operated by LNLS from 1997 to 2019.

Laboratório Nacional de Luz Síncrotron (Portuguese pronunciation: [laboɾɐˈtɔɾju nɐsjoˈnaw dʒi ˈlus ˈsĩkɾotɾõ]; LNLS) is the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory, a research institution on physics, chemistry, material science and life sciences. It is located in the city of Campinas, sub-district of Barão Geraldo, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The Center, which is operated by the Brazilian Center of Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) under a contract with the National Research Council (CNPq) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of Brazil, has the only particle accelerator (a synchrotron) in Latin America, which was designed and built in Brazil by a team of physicists, technicians and engineers. Currently, the Brazilian Synchrotron has 6 different beamlines in operation for its user community, covering energies ranging from a few electronvolts to tens of kiloelectronvolts. The uses include: X-Ray Nanoscopy Coherent and Time-resolsed X-ray Scattering X-ray Spectroscopy e Diffraction in Extreme Conditions Infrared Micro and Nanospectroscopy Resonant Inelastic X-ray scattering and Photoelectron spectroscopy Macromolecular Micro and Nanocrystallography These beamlines are part of Sirius, a 3 GeV synchrotron light source. The plan includes an initial 13 beamlines, with a final goal of 40, ranging from 10 eV to 100 keV. It was inaugurated in 2018.
