Fort Pemberton

Riverland Terrace is a historic neighborhood in Charleston, South Carolina. It was first developed starting in 1925. It is one of James Island, South Carolina's oldest neighborhoods. The Terrace is located 10 minutes west of downtown Charleston along Wappoo Creek and the inland waterway. The neighborhood boasts a public boat landing, Charleston Municipal Golf Course, a playground, five restaurants and numerous antique shops. Edisto Realty Co. (a company owned by C. Bissell Jenkins and his three sons) announced its plans to immediately start laying plans for the development of 85 to 90 acres on James Island in October 1925. W.C. Wilbur & Co. was the real estate agency for the developer and offered special reduced pricing ($700 to $1750) on the original 229 lots for the first few weeks until November 10, 1925. The development included 13 commercial lots among the residential properties. The development did not follow a traditional grid layout but instead had winding streets. The development is bordered to the north by the Wappoo Cut, and two man-made lakes were created out of inlets from the Wappoo Cut.The first houses were completed in May 1926.Leading into the neighborhood is the historic Avenue of Oaks, consisting of 73 live oak trees believed to be over 100 years old. The avenue of oaks had been begun about 1910, and the developers completed the installation of the oaks during the landscaping of the neighborhood starting in 1925. In 2017, neighborhood residents had issues with the local electrical company cutting down trees unnecessarily.The Terrace consists of approximately 800 homes. Fort Pemberton, a Civil War fortification built in 1862, remains today.

The Paul Gelegotis Bridge, also known as the Stono Bridge, is located in Charleston, South Carolina, United States; it connects James Island and Johns Island on SC 700 (Maybank Highway). This bridge opened in late 2003, on the historically significant site of a series of former Stono Bridges.

Farmfield Plantation House was built in 1854 for William Ravenel, a prominent Charleston businessman and banker. It is one of the few plantation houses with unaltered exteriors in St. Andrew's Parish which survived the American Civil War. The interior has been modified.Farmfield Plantation once included most of the property between U.S. Highway 17 and Folly Road, but most of it has been subdivided. Its construction was described by Rose Pringle Ravenel, the daughter of the builder, in her book Piazza Tales. Today, the house is surrounded on three sides by suburban development. In 2002, an easement to the Lowcountry Open Land Trust was placed on the remaining six acres to ensure no further subdivisions.The house was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on October 29, 1982.

The Wappoo Creek Bridge is a bridge that connects the cities of Charleston and James Island in South Carolina. No bridge crossed the Wappoo Cut at the present location historically. A private company was chartered in 1896 and began raising funds. In 1898, when the idea of building a bridge was raised, phosphate companies, lumber companies, and towboat companies were aligned against the proposal for fear of its impact on their shipping businesses.A wooden bridge was added over the Wappoo Creek. That first bridge operated as a toll bridge until the privately-owned span was bought by the county in 1918. The county negotiated the price down to $8500 from $12,500, explaining that about $3500 of repairs were needed.The second bridge, opened in 1926, was a 434 foot span of concrete and metal. The earlier bridge had been rendered inadequate by the new developments on James Island including the Charleston County Club. When opened, the bridge was a swing bridge with a roadway 20 feet wide. The 1926 bridge was designed by James L. Parker and was built by the Sanitary and Drainage Commission of Charleston County with the Salmons-Clement Co. as the concrete contractor at a cost of $140,000.The 1926 swing bridge was, like the first bridge, inadequate for the increases in traffic. In 1949, funding (about $400,000) was secured for a larger bridge that would not have to been opened as frequently to permit small boats to pass. The replacement span was expected to be about 20 higher (30 feet versus 10.5 feet) than the swing span and was to be built 500 feet westward of the swing bridge to alleviate sharp turns on the approach. Surveying work for the draw bridge began in 1954.The current bridge was named to honor Burnet R. Maybank. The $900,000 bridge opened to traffic on June 12, 1956.

McLeod Plantation is a former slave plantation located on James Island, South Carolina, near the intersection of Folly and Maybank roads at Wappoo Creek, which flows into the Ashley River. The plantation is considered an important Gullah heritage site, preserved in recognition of its cultural and historical significance to African-American and European-American cultures.

Lefebvre's Charles Town expedition (September 1706) was a combined French and Spanish attempt under Captain Jacques Lefebvre to capture the capital of the English Province of Carolina, Charles Town, during Queen Anne's War (as the North American theater of the War of the Spanish Succession is sometimes known). Organized and funded primarily by the French and launched from Havana, Cuba, the expedition reached Charles Town in early September 1706 after stopping at St. Augustine to pick up reinforcements. After a brief encounter with a privateer the Brillant, one of the expedition's six ships, became separated from the rest of the fleet. Troops landed near Charles Town were quickly driven off by militia called out by Governor Nathaniel Johnson when word of the fleet's approach reached the area, and an improvised flotilla commanded by Colonel William Rhett successfully captured the Brillant, which arrived after the other five ships had already sailed away in defeat.

The Charleston Sofa Super Store fire disaster occurred on the evening of June 18, 2007, in Charleston, South Carolina, and killed nine firefighters. This was the deadliest firefighter disaster in the US since the September 11 attacks. Though the fire was believed to have started in some discarded furniture in the loading dock area, the exact source of ignition remains undetermined.

Battery Tynes is a historic artillery battery located at James Island, Charleston, South Carolina. It was built in 1863, and designed to protect the upper Stono River and the bridge from James Island to Johns Island, South Carolina. The earthen redoubt measures approximately 320 feet long and 180 feet deep. It has a 10–20 foot high parapet wall and a 15 feet high powder magazine.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The 2019 U.S. Women's Open was the 74th U.S. Women's Open, played May 30 – June 2 at Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. The U.S. Women's Open is the oldest of the five current major championships and the second of the 2019 season. It has the largest purse in women's golf at $5.5 million. The tournament was televised by Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports.

The Fenwick Hall, which is also known as Fenwick Castle, is a plantation house built about 1730 on Johns Island, South Carolina, across the Stono River from James Island and Charleston. It is located between River Road and Penneys Creek. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1972.

The West Ashley Greenway is a rail trail in Charleston, South Carolina. It stretches across the West Ashley neighborhood from Main Road in the west to Folly Road in the east. It is a straight and mostly paved path utilized for walking, jogging, roller skating, and off-street cycling. The distance of the main trail currently covers 8.8 miles (14.2 km). It is a contributing segment of the East Coast Greenway. In 2019, the U.S. Department of Transportation gave the city of Charleston a $18 million grant to build a pedestrian bridge across the Ashley River connecting West Ashley to downtown Charleston. The planned pedestrian bridge may eventually connect with the Lowcountry Lowline.The former railway, chartered in 1853, which was known as The Croghans Branch of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. was abandoned by Seaboard Coast Line Railroad in 1981 and over time, the City of Charleston entered into leasing agreements with utility companies that took over the right-of-way to allow for public access. The last section of the trail was completed in 2007.

The Porter-Gaud School is an independent coeducational college preparatory day school in Charleston, in the U.S. state of South Carolina. Porter-Gaud has an enrollment of about 1000 students, comprising an elementary school, middle school, and high school, and is located on the banks of the Ashley River. The school has historic ties to the Episcopal Church. Porter-Gaud was formed in July 1964 from the merger of three schools: The Porter Military Academy (founded 1867), the Gaud School for Boys (founded 1908), and the Watt School (founded 1931). The legal name of the institution remains The Porter Academy.
