The Charleston Sofa Super Store fire disaster occurred on the evening of June 18, 2007, in Charleston, South Carolina, and killed nine firefighters. This was the deadliest firefighter disaster in the US since the September 11 attacks. Though the fire was believed to have started in some discarded furniture in the loading dock area, the exact source of ignition remains undetermined.

On September 1, 2013 the mall went into foreclosure after then owner CBL & Associates Properties defaulted on mortgage payments and it was purchased at auction by the lender in January 2014. After the auction, the mall was placed under the ownership of a holding company formed by the lender, 2070 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard Holdings LLC and as of January 2017 was under contract to be sold to an undisclosed buyer. The anchor stores are Target, Belk, Dillard's, Mixed Bag Productions, and Medical University of South Carolina.

It was built in 1862, to protect the exterior western lines running from the Stono River on the south to the Ashley River at Bee's Ferry. It has emplacements for two guns. It measures approximately 160 feet by 160 feet with a 10-foot parapet and a 15-foot powder magazine.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Fenwick Hall, which is also known as Fenwick Castle, is a plantation house built about 1730 on Johns Island, South Carolina, across the Stono River from James Island and Charleston. It is located between River Road and Penneys Creek. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1972.

Farmfield Plantation House was built in 1854 for William Ravenel, a prominent Charleston businessman and banker. It is one of the few plantation houses with unaltered exteriors in St. Andrew's Parish which survived the American Civil War. The interior has been modified.Farmfield Plantation once included most of the property between U.S. Highway 17 and Folly Road, but most of it has been subdivided. Its construction was described by Rose Pringle Ravenel, the daughter of the builder, in her book Piazza Tales. Today, the house is surrounded on three sides by suburban development. In 2002, an easement to the Lowcountry Open Land Trust was placed on the remaining six acres to ensure no further subdivisions.The house was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on October 29, 1982.

The Paul Gelegotis Bridge, also known as the Stono Bridge, is located in Charleston, South Carolina, United States; it connects James Island and Johns Island on SC 700 (Maybank Highway). This bridge opened in late 2003, on the historically significant site of a series of former Stono Bridges.

Fort Pemberton was one of the larger confederate forts was constructed in the defense of Charleston, South Carolina during the American Civil War. At the war's outset in 1861, it became evident that control of the western regions of James Island and the Stono River was to be an important element in the defense of the city. Confederate military authorities of the time believed that Union occupation of James Island would leave Charleston subject to attack from the southeast. From this position the city would assuredly fall to the Union. Although there were many gun batteries in place along the south and east side of James Island, Fort Pemberton was the only fortress in defense of this region.

Ashley Landing (originally opened as Ashley Plaza and later known as Ashley Plaza Mall) is a shopping mall in Charleston, South Carolina, United States. It was the first indoor shopping mall in the West Ashley area of Charleston when the complex was fully completed in 1972. The center, located at 1401 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard (S.C. Highway 7) at the fork of Old Towne Road (S.C. Highway 171) was developed by Gate City Realty Company of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Ground was broken for the complex in 1962 with Ashley Plaza opening on April 16, 1964. At its opening the shopping center consisted of J.M. Fields Department Stores joined to a Pantry Pride supermarket, built at a cost of $1.75 million and owned by Sumar Corporation of South Carolina. The locally owned Condon's Department Store, constructed adjacent to Pantry Pride as a freestanding building, became the third tenant when it opened in 1970. The center, originally known as "Ashley Plaza" was noted for its large red and white neon pylon "Ashley Plaza" sign in the center of the parking lot that remained until 1989 when it was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo.
