RAF Acaster Malbis

Acaster Selby is a village in the former Selby District of North Yorkshire, England. It is part of the joint civil parish with Appleton Roebuck (where the population is now included). It is situated about 6 miles (9.7 km) south from York, on the west back of the River Ouse; near the opposite bank is the settlement of Stillingfleet, and 1.3 miles (2.1 km) to the north-west is Appleton Roebuck.

St John's Church is an Anglican church in Acaster Selby, a village south of York, in England. Until 1850, Acaster Selby fell within the parish of Stillingfleet, with a church on the opposite side of the River Ouse. In 1833, eleven members of the choir drowned while crossing the river, and this spurred the construction of a church in Acaster Selby. It was designed by John Loughborough Pearson, completed in 1850, and dedicated to John the Evangelist. It was granted its own parish, although in 1875 this was merged with that of neighbouring Appleton Roebuck, with All Saints' Church, Appleton Roebuck becoming the parish church. The church was Grade II listed in 1978. The Gothic Revival church is built of sandstone, with limestone dressings and a tiled roof. It has a four-bay nave with a south porch, and a two-bay chancel with a vestry to the north-east. On the west gable, there is a bellcote. The porch has an opening with a pointed arch and a double-chamfered surround, and a door with a moulded surround and a hood mould, and there is a priest's door with a chamfered architrave and a hood mould. Most of the windows have two lights and have tracery in the Decorated style. There is some original stained glass, including one window designed by Mayer and Co. The font is also 19th century.

Bishopthorpe was a rural district in the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1937. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 from that part of the York Rural Sanitary District which was in the West Riding. It included the parishes of Acaster Malbis, Askham Richard, Bishopthorpe, Copmanthorpe, Dringhouses Without and Middlethorpe Without. It was abolished in 1937 by a County Review Order. Part joined the county borough of York, with the rest becoming part of the Tadcaster Rural District in the West Riding.

Acaster South Ings is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, or SSSI, near York, England. It consists of two alluvial flood-meadows, and was designated in 1988 because it supports diverse fauna and flora, some of which is rare in the Vale of York area. One of the rarities is the tansy beetle, which feeds on the leaves of the tansy plant.

St Helen's Church is the parish church of Stillingfleet, in North Yorkshire, in England.

Stillingfleet is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It was in the historic East Riding of Yorkshire, but since 1974 has come under North Yorkshire. It is about 6 miles (10 km) south of York and nearby settlements include Acaster Selby, Naburn and Appleton Roebuck. Stillingfleet was once the site of UK Coal's Stillingfleet Mine, part of the Selby Coalfield, which closed in 2004. St Helen's Church, the parish church, is a grade I listed building. Another notable building is Moreby Hall, which is grade II* listed.The village was historically in the East Riding of Yorkshire, but from 1974 to 2023 was in the Selby District of the shire county of North Yorkshire. In 2023 the district was abolished and North Yorkshire became a unitary authority.

Acaster Malbis () is a village and civil parish in the unitary authority of the City of York, England. It is located on the River Ouse, almost 5 miles (8 km) south of York. Nearby are the villages of Copmanthorpe 2 miles (3.2 km) to the north-west, Bishopthorpe 2 miles to the north and Appleton Roebuck 3.5 miles (6 km) to the south-west. The parish covers an area of about 2,000 acres (810 ha). The Latin word for a camp is 'castra' indicating that the Roman army may once have been based here. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Acastre". The 'Malbis' is derived from the Norman Malbysse or De Malebys family. Malbis was a Norman personal name that in French means "very swarthy".There was a Royal Air Force station next to the village during and immediately after the Second World War. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 578, increasing to 669 at the 2011 census. There are two churches and an inn in the village. The village is also the home for a holiday park. The village was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. It was then a part of the district of Selby District in North Yorkshire from 1974 until 1996. Since 1996 it has been part of the City of York unitary authority.

Copmanthorpe Preceptory was a medieval monastic house in North Yorkshire, England. The manor of Copmanthorpe was given to the Knights Templar by William Malbys with the earliest reference to the Templars ownership being from a confirmatory charter by William de Ros who died in 1258. In 1292 the preceptor of Copmanthorpe, who at this time was Robert de Reygate, is recorded as being the keeper of the mills beside York Castle.

Bell Hall is a grade I listed building, in Naburn, in the rural southern part of the city of York, in England. The house was built in 1680 for John Hewley, in pink-orange brick, with stone dressings, a rendered basement, and a slate roof. As built, it was rectangular in plan, approximately 60 by 45 feet, with entrances on the south and west fronts, each of which was symmetrical. The architect is not known with certainty, but is suggested by Historic England to be John Etty, father of William Etty. The ground floor contained a substantial entrance hall, a parlour, a dining room and a library; the first floor a drawing room and several sitting rooms; and the basement accommodation for servants and a kitchen. In about 1717, a kitchen wing was added on the eastern side.Both the main and rear staircases survive from the original build, and alterations have been relatively minor, such as the replacement of entrance doors and external steps in the 19th century, and 20th century sundials added above each entrance. Original panelling and fireplaces survive in most rooms. In the entrance hall is a Jacobean overmantel, brought from Deighton Hall, and a side room has an overmantel brought in about 1750 from a house on St Saviourgate in York. The old drawing room has several painted wooden panels, probably of French or Flemish origin.The house was listed at grade I in 1952.

The River Wharfe ( WHORF) is a river in Yorkshire, England originating within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. For much of its middle course it is the county boundary between West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. Its valley is known as Wharfedale. The watercourse first becomes known as the River Wharfe at the confluence of Greenfield Beck and Oughtershaw Beck at Beckermonds. Flowing initially through Langstrothdale, it then passes by, or in some cases through, Kettlewell, Grassington, Bolton Abbey, Addingham, Ilkley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Otley, Wetherby and Tadcaster. It then flows into the River Ouse near Cawood. The section of the river from its source to around Addingham is in Upper Wharfedale and has a very different character to the river downstream. The Wharfe is 65 miles (104.6 km) long (before it joins the Ouse), making it the 21st longest river in Britain. It is a public navigation from the weir at Tadcaster to its junction with the Ouse near Cawood and is tidal from Ulleskelf to the Ouse.

Elmet (Welsh: Elfed), sometimes Elmed or Elmete, was an independent Brittonic Celtic Cumbric speaking kingdom between about the 4th century and mid 7th century. The people of Elmet survived as a distinctly recognized Brittonic Celtic group for centuries afterwards in what later became the smaller area of the West Riding of Yorkshire then West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire.

The West Riding of Yorkshire was one of three historic subdivisions of Yorkshire, England. From 1889 to 1974 the riding was an administrative county named County of York, West Riding. The lieutenancy at that time included the city of York and as such was named "West Riding of the County of York and the County of the City of York". The riding ceased to be used for administrative purposes in 1974, when England's local government was reformed. Contemporary local government boundaries in Yorkshire largely do not follow those of the riding. The entirety of South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire were historically within its the boundaries, as were the south-western areas of North Yorkshire (including Ripon), the Sedbergh area of Cumbria, the Barnoldswick and Slaidburn areas of Lancashire, and the part of the East Riding of Yorkshire around Goole.
