Opbrakel

Brakel (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈbraːkəl] ) is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek and the Flemish Ardennes. The name is derived from a Carolingian villa Braglo first mentioned in 866 and located in the center of Opbrakel. Since 1970, the municipality has comprised the villages of Nederbrakel, Opbrakel, Michelbeke, Elst, Zegelsem. In 1977 Everbeek, Parike and part of Sint-Maria-Oudenhove were added. On 1 January 2018, Brakel had a population of 14,781. The area is 56.46 km² which gives a population density of 262 per km². The mayor is Stefaan De Vleeschouwer. The region is known for the green hills and valleys, which attract cyclists and walkers and play a role in the Tour of Flanders cycling race. The Braekel chicken is named after the town. The Uitkijktoren, a 32 metres (105 ft) high viewing tower was opened in April 2001. It is located at 50.8124°N 3.7391°E / 50.8124; 3.7391 on the Twaalfbunderstraat, north-west of Nederbrakel. Orientation boards at the top enable visitors to identify places of interest in all directions.

With 5,972 residents as of 2000, it forms the largest individual part of the municipality. Nederbrakel is located near the language border.

The Leberg is a hill and uphill street in Elst, part of the municipality of Brakel, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Its top is at 99 m altitude, making it one of the highest hills of the Zwalm region, just north of the Flemish Ardennes. The road has an asphalt surface and links the valley town of Elst to the hilltop town of Zegelsem.

Michelbeke is a village in the municipality of Brakel, Belgium. It is located in the Denderstreek and in the Flemish Ardennes, the hilly southern part of the province of East Flanders, Belgium. It was itself a municipality until the fusion of the municipalities on 1 January 1971.

The Berendries is an uphill street in Michelbeke, part of the municipality of Brakel, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Its top is at 98 m altitude, making it the highest hill of the Zwalm region, just north of the Flemish Ardennes. The road has an asphalt surface and links the valley town of Michelbeke to the hilltop town of Sint-Maria-Oudenhove.

Parike is a village and deelgemeente (sub-municipality) of the municipality of Brakel. It is located in the Denderstreek in the province of East Flanders in Belgium. It used to be an independent municipality until 1977 when it was merged into Brakel.

Flobecq (French pronunciation: ​[flɔbɛk]; Dutch: Vloesberg, Dutch pronunciation: [ˈvlusˌbɛrx]; Picard: Flôbek) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. It borders to the municipalities of Ellezelles (to the west) and Lessines (to the east) in the same province and to Brakel in the province of East Flanders, on the other side of the language border. On January 1, 2018, Flobecq had a total population of 3,420. The total area is 23 km2 (8.9 sq mi) which gives a population density of 150 inhabitants per square kilometre (390/sq mi). Flobecq is a tourist village. Each year, on the nearest Friday to 17 January, there is a marvelous local feast based on the adoration of Saint Antony. Flobecq offers language facilities for Dutch speakers.

Sint-Maria-Oudenhove is a village in the Denderstreek and in the Flemish Ardennes, the hilly southern part of the province of East Flanders, Belgium. It was formerly an independent municipality. In 1977 the main part of the settlement became part of the municipality of Zottegem, with a smaller section joining the municipality of Brakel.

Everbeek (French: Everbecq) is a village situated in the Flemish Ardennes and in the Denderstreek in Belgium. In 1977, it was included into the municipality of Brakel. Although it is Dutch speaking, this village was part of the Walloon province of Hainaut (Henegouwen) until 1963, when it became part of the Flemish province of East Flanders.

Sint-Goriks-Oudenhove is a village situated in the municipality of Zottegem, Belgium. It is located in the Flemish Ardennes, the hilly southern part of the province of East Flanders. Its name refers to Saint Gaugericus (En. Saint Gery), Bishop of Cambrai during the 7th century. Sint-Goriks-Oudenhove used to contain two small heerlijkheden which were part of the barony of Zottegem.Sint-Goriks-Oudenhove in an agricultural community. In 1970, the municipality merged into Zottegem.
