The suburb was named after Joseph Lyons, Labor Premier of Tasmania from 1923 to 1928 and a Minister in the James Scullin government from 1929 until his resignation from the Labor Party in March 1931. He subsequently led the United Australia Party and was the tenth Prime Minister of Australia from January 1932 until his death in 1939. The suburb is bounded by Melrose Drive, Tuggeranong Parkway and Hindmarsh Drive. Oakey Hill Nature Reserve, part of Canberra Nature Park, is located within the suburb. The reserve has a number of walking trails and views across Woden and Weston Creek and into Civic. The suburb has a local shopping centre and neighbourhood oval. A former petrol station has since been demolished. Lyons Early Learning School caters for children from birth to grade two through an on-site childcare provider amalgamated with the school.Streets in Lyons are named after locations in Tasmania.

In 1971, a flash flood caused the deaths of seven people, which occurred right near the Woden Town Centre. The Canberra College (formerly known as the Phillip College) is an Australian Capital Territory public school, which educates students from year 11 to year 12. In 2022, Simon Vaughan was appointed Principal, taking over from Michael Battenally. The school was founded in 1976 under the name of Phillip College after secondary schools were in demand while a working party recommended the establishment of autonomous education. A Commonwealth Teaching Service was approved in September 1970 to provide teachers in Canberran schools. The name of the school was changed and reopened under the name of the Canberra College in 1997 after the Stirling College in Stirling amalgamated with the Phillip College. It was officially opened on 19 March 1997 by the Minister for Education and Training, Bill Stefaniak.The Canberra College offered the International Baccalaureate diploma in its curriculum until 2017 when it was discontinued for the following year. The college was an IB World School from March 2008.

Oakey Hill is a hill near Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. It rises 80 metres (260 ft) above the adjacent south Canberra suburbs of Lyons, Curtin and Weston, and its 66 hectares (163 acres) is one of 33 areas which form Canberra Nature Reserve. The highest point of the hill, 684 metres above sea level, is marked by a survey station. The hill’s name is thought to come from the stands of she oaks (casuarinas, Allocasuarina verticillata) growing on the hill, mainly on the eastern side.About half of Oakey Hill is open space with a mix of native and exotic grasses, while the remainder is bushland with stands of native eucalypts including yellow box and Blakely’s red gum. A number of walking tracks circle or cross the hill. The walking tracks are popular with day walkers and they also see some cycle and equestrian traffic. The walks are generally rated as easy with some short steep climbs. The views from the summit are impressive: east to Red Hill and Isaacs Ridge, north to Scrivener Dam and Mt Painter and the Belconnen hills, northeast beyond the Captain Cook memorial water jet towards Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura, and west over Cooleman Ridge to the Brindabellas.

The Woden Cemetery is the main cemetery in Canberra, the capital of Australia. It is located adjacent to the Woden Town Centre. The cemetery opened in 1936 as the Canberra General Cemetery. It closed for burials in 1979, but was re-opened in March 1999. Memorial gardens were opened in 1992, and the Christ the Redeemer Mausoleum, for burial in above-ground vaults, was completed in 2001. The cemetery is nearing capacity; it was announced in February 2009 that it would be full in about 10 years, necessitating the construction of a third cemetery to service the city.
