Coxsackie, New York

Coxsackie is a village in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 2,746 at the 2020 census.The village name comes from the native word mak-kachs-hack-ing. When the land was purchased by the Dutch settlers, the name was written as Koxhackung. It is generally translated as "Hoot-owl place" or "place of many owls" from an Algonquin word believed to mean "Place of Owls" or "Owl's Hoot". The village is in the eastern part of the town of Coxsackie along the Hudson River. The "downstreet," or downtown area, along Reed Street is home to a Post Office branch, a town Library (Heermance Memorial Library), the main offices of the State Telephone Company (internet and telephone services), National Bank of Coxsackie's main branch office, and a growing group of active, small businesses. Reed Street is two blocks long and ends at Riverside Park with panoramic views of the Hudson River. A local developer has recently bought the decaying but historic buildings and warehouses along the river in order to re-develop them for new use.

Reed Street Historic District is a national historic district located at Coxsackie in Greene County, New York. The district contains 30 contributing buildings. They are a collection of mid-19th century, two and three story commercial buildings. The district displays a uniformity of style in its Italianate style brick facades with ornate brackets and overhanging eaves. It also includes three late Federal style residences.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The Greene Correctional Facility is a state prison for men located in Coxsackie, Greene County, New York, owned and operated by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.The facility opened in 1989 and holds 1582 inmates at medium security, which includes 171 held in a maximum security unit. Greene is adjacent to the state's Coxsackie Correctional Facility, originally built in 1935. Several incarcerated individuals have been killed by other inmates while in custody at this facility. Inmates at this facility are also responsible for numerous assaults on staff. Additionally, it was revealed that in 2016, prison guards instigated an attack on an inmate and covered it up.

R. and W. Scott Ice Company Powerhouse and Ice House Site is a national historic district located at Stuyvesant in Columbia County, New York. The district includes one contributing building, one contributing structure, and one contributing site. They are the remains of an ice house, the exterior walls and chimney of a powerhouse (ca. 1885) and the surviving features of a dock and bulkhead. The ice house measured 300 feet long and 200 feet wide and the foundation walls are two feet thick.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Lampman Hill is a mountain in Greene County, New York. It is located in the Catskill Mountains southeast of Coxsackie. High Rocks is located north-northwest, and Flint Mine Hill is located west-southwest of Lampman Hill.

Lynch Hotel is a historic hotel located at Newton Hook in Columbia County, New York. It was built about 1900 and is a 2-story, five-by-four-bay, frame building with a gable roof in the Queen Anne style. Also on the property is a small barn or carriage house. It has been a single family home since about 1935.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The neighboring James Lynch House was listed in 2009.

James Lynch House is a historic home located at Nutten Hook in Columbia County, New York. It was built about 1900 and is a two-story, light frame building on a brick foundation. It functioned as the Nutten Hook post office from about 1948 to 1955. It was built for James Lynch, who operated the adjacent Lynch Hotel.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Coxsackie Light was a lighthouse near the town of Coxsackie, New York, on the northerly end of the Low island northerly of Coxsackie island and on the westerly side of the main channel of the Hudson River. The lighthouse was first established in 1830 and the last tower was first lit in 1868. The lighthouse was deactivated in 1940. The lighthouse was a red square tower with granite trimmings and a red dwelling on stone pier. The lantern housing was black. The light was 32 feet high fixed white light. The original lens was a sixth order Fresnel lens. The Archives Center at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History has a collection (#1055) of souvenir postcards of lighthouses and has digitized 272 of these and made them available online. These include postcards of Coxsackie Light with links to customized nautical charts provided by National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

Coxsackie Correctional Facility is a maximum security state prison in Coxsackie, Greene County, New York. It currently houses approximately 900 inmates. It is classified as a maximum security general confinement facility and detention center for men.

Flint Mine Hill is a mountain in Greene County, New York, in the Catskill Mountains east-northeast of Limestreet. Potic Mountain is west, Lampman Hill is an east-northeast, and Hallenbeck Hill is south of Flint Mine Hill.

Van Bergen House is a historic home located at New Baltimore in Greene County, New York. It was built about 1786 (expanded about 1820) and is a two-story, four by five bay stubblestone residence with a slate-clad hipped roof. It was restored in the mid-20th century. Also on the property is a smoke house.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
