Riverside is an unincorporated community in western Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The community lies along the Roanoke River near Dixie Caverns along U.S. 11/U.S. 460. The area is more commonly referred to as Dixie Caverns instead of Riverside.

Bonsack is an unincorporated community in eastern Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The community is located near the junction of US 460 and US 220 Alternate.

Dixie Caverns is a commercial show cave located in the Riverside community of Roanoke County, Virginia, USA, four miles west of Salem. The cave is a limestone solution cave.

WXLK airs a Top 40 (CHR) radio format and is owned and operated by Mel Wheeler, Inc.WXLK's studios and offices are on Electric Road in Roanoke. Its transmitter is on Honeysuckle Road in Bent Mountain. WXLK broadcasts in the HD Radio format. The station runs at 100,000 watts effective radiated power (ERP) on a tower 1,985 feet in height above average terrain (HAAT). The Class C station can be heard into North Carolina and West Virginia. At times it can be picked up more than 200 miles away.

Lafayette Historic District is a national historic district located at Lafayette, Montgomery County, Virginia. The district encompasses 19 contributing buildings in the village of Lafayette. It includes principally single family dwellings of frame construction dating from about 1830 to 1940. Notable buildings include the Pepper House (c. 1829), Lafayette Methodist Church (c. 1847), Sid Butt Barbershop and House (1940), Gardner Store, and Butt Store.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Lafayette is a census-designated place (CDP) between the cities of Roanoke and Christiansburg in eastern Montgomery County, southwest Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 Census was 449. It is located adjacent to Elliston, at the confluence of the North and South Forks of the Roanoke River. The Lafayette Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Wabun is an unincorporated community in western Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The community lies along the Roanoke River and near the base of Poor Mountain.

Elliston-Lafayette was a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,241 at the 2000 census; in 2010, Elliston and Lafayette were split into separate CDPs. It is part of the Blacksburg–Christiansburg Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Montgomery County, Virginia, including the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg, and the city of Radford. However, many residents of the eastern section of Montgomery County more often travel to Roanoke or Salem for work, shopping, and services since these cities are generally closer and do not require driving up Christiansburg Mountain on U.S. Route 460 (which is a concurrency with U.S. Route 11 here) or Interstate 81. Elliston and Lafayette are also considered distinct communities by most local residents. Lafayette is located along the Roanoke River just across the Roanoke County line. The north fork and south fork of the river join near Interstate 81 north of Lafayette. While Lafayette is named for the Marquis de Lafayette, it is pronounced "Luh-fett" or "Luh-fay-ett". The center of Elliston, which is the larger community, is approximately three miles west of Lafayette on US 460. Shawsville is approximately four miles west of Elliston. The majority of US 460 between the communities is a completely straight stretch of road, which is not common in this area of Virginia, known locally as the Elliston Straightaway. During the 1990s, there was some minor controversy between Elliston and Shawsville about how far down the Elliston Straightaway would be the appropriate place for a "Welcome to Shawsville" sign. Additionally, Shawsville Elementary School also resides in 24087, the Elliston ZIP Code.

Poor Mountain is a ridge of high peaks located in Roanoke County, Virginia and Montgomery County, Virginia. At 3,928 feet, Poor Mountain is the tallest mountain in the immediate area. Poor Mountain has the largest known population, by far, of piratebush (Buckleya distichophylla), a plant which draws nutrients from the roots of Eastern Hemlock trees. Piratebush is found only in limited numbers at a few other locations in Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The Poor Mountain Natural Area Preserve has been established to protect this population. Twelve O'clock Knob is located adjacent to Poor Mountain in Roanoke County directly south of Salem, Virginia. The north slope of the ridgeline formed by Poor Mountain and Twelve O'clock Knob marks the southwestern boundary of the Roanoke Valley. Fort Lewis Mountain is located directly across the valley from Poor Mountain.

Bowstring Truss Bridge, also known as the Roaring Run Bowstring Truss Bridge and King Tubular Arch Truss Bridge, is a historic bowstring truss bridge located at the Ironto Rest Area near Ironto, Montgomery County, Virginia. It was built by the King Bridge Company in 1878, and is a single-span, four-panel tubular arch pony truss. It measures 55 feet (17 m) long, 12 feet (3.7 m) wide, and 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m) high with an open roadway width of approximately 9 feet 6 inches (2.90 m). The bridge was partially disassembled and moved from its original location to a second site during the 1930s, where it remained until moved to its current location in 1977.The bridge was documented by the Historic American Engineering Record in 1983 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

Pleasant Grove, also known as Joseph Deyerle House, Deyerle Homeplace, and Glenvar is a historic home located near Salem in Roanoke County, Virginia. It was built in 1853, and is a two-story, three-bay, Greek Revival style brick dwelling. The front facade features a well-proportioned Ionic order portico with slender tapered, fluted columns. It also has an original sunroom measuring 7 feet by 14 feet. Also on the property are the contributing kitchen (now connected to the main house), spring house, smokehouse, servant's house, and privy.Much of the woodwork was done by a carpenter named Gustave A. Sedon, who worked closely with both Joseph and his half-brother, Benjamin Deyerle. "One of the most interesting things about Pleasant Grove is the fine architectural detail on the front which was put out on the house by Gustavus Sedon (sic), a German carpenter/handyman contractor. The house has interesting Ionic columns which Sedon carved and a cast iron balcony up on the top which Sedon or Joseph Deyerle, the owner of the house, ordered from Lynchburg, Virginia or maybe from Richmond. Someday I'll pursue this iron work but its interesting to know that the exact ironwork is on the Witherow house in Lexington, Virginia, on a house on Main Street in Lynchburg, Virginia, and another building in Richmond, Virginia."It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Glenvar is a census-designated place (CDP) in western Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 Census was 976. The center of the community lies along US 11/US 460 about one mile west of the Salem city limits. The community is home to Glenvar High School which serves most of the western sections of Roanoke County. As a result, the entire area of Roanoke County which is west of Salem and in the Roanoke Valley between Poor Mountain and Fort Lewis Mountain, including other communities such as Wabun, Fort Lewis, and Dixie Caverns, is often called Glenvar. In January 2020 the Swedish truck maker Volvo announced that they would build an assembly plant for its subsidiary Mack trucks in Glenvar. The plant is expected to employ 250 people. This was reported by the Roanoke Times by Casey Fabris on 30 January 2020. However, the global pandemic of the coronavirus has halted production temporarily at all of Mack(Volvo) locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.
