Pleasant Grove, also known as Joseph Deyerle House, Deyerle Homeplace, and Glenvar is a historic home located near Salem in Roanoke County, Virginia. It was built in 1853, and is a two-story, three-bay, Greek Revival style brick dwelling. The front facade features a well-proportioned Ionic order portico with slender tapered, fluted columns. It also has an original sunroom measuring 7 feet by 14 feet. Also on the property are the contributing kitchen (now connected to the main house), spring house, smokehouse, servant's house, and privy.Much of the woodwork was done by a carpenter named Gustave A. Sedon, who worked closely with both Joseph and his half-brother, Benjamin Deyerle. "One of the most interesting things about Pleasant Grove is the fine architectural detail on the front which was put out on the house by Gustavus Sedon (sic), a German carpenter/handyman contractor. The house has interesting Ionic columns which Sedon carved and a cast iron balcony up on the top which Sedon or Joseph Deyerle, the owner of the house, ordered from Lynchburg, Virginia or maybe from Richmond. Someday I'll pursue this iron work but its interesting to know that the exact ironwork is on the Witherow house in Lexington, Virginia, on a house on Main Street in Lynchburg, Virginia, and another building in Richmond, Virginia."It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Glenvar is a census-designated place (CDP) in western Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 Census was 976. The center of the community lies along US 11/US 460 about one mile west of the Salem city limits. The community is home to Glenvar High School which serves most of the western sections of Roanoke County. As a result, the entire area of Roanoke County which is west of Salem and in the Roanoke Valley between Poor Mountain and Fort Lewis Mountain, including other communities such as Wabun, Fort Lewis, and Dixie Caverns, is often called Glenvar. In January 2020 the Swedish truck maker Volvo announced that they would build an assembly plant for its subsidiary Mack trucks in Glenvar. The plant is expected to employ 250 people. This was reported by the Roanoke Times by Casey Fabris on 30 January 2020. However, the global pandemic of the coronavirus has halted production temporarily at all of Mack(Volvo) locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.

Glenvar High School is a public high school in Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. It is one of the five high schools for the Roanoke County public school system. Glenvar High School serves the western end of Roanoke County and is located in the community of Glenvar, which is immediately west of Salem, Virginia.

Riverside is an unincorporated community in western Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The community lies along the Roanoke River near Dixie Caverns along U.S. 11/U.S. 460. The area is more commonly referred to as Dixie Caverns instead of Riverside.

Bonsack is an unincorporated community in eastern Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The community is located near the junction of US 460 and US 220 Alternate.

Spring Hollow Reservoir is a 158-acre (0.64 km2), 3.3-billion-US-gallon (12,000,000 m3) side-stream reservoir in Roanoke County, Virginia with the largest roller-compacted concrete dam east of the Mississippi Having commenced operation in 1996, it is now the main source of water for residents of Roanoke County.

Poor Mountain Natural Area Preserve is a 1,404-acre (568 ha) Natural Area Preserve located on Poor Mountain in Roanoke County, Virginia. The preserve protects the world's largest population of piratebush (Buckleya distichophylla), a globally rare parasitic shrub. The mountain derives its name from the fact that the soils on its slopes are poor, due to their base of metamorphosed sandstone bedrock. The preserve's pine-oak/heath woodlands include Table Mountain pine, eastern hemlock, several species of oak, and shrubs including huckleberry, mountain laurel, and fetterbush.Poor Mountain Natural Area Preserve is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. The preserve is open to the public, with improvements including a small parking area and four miles (6.4 km) of trails.

At times it can be picked up more than 200 miles away.

Twelve O'clock Knob is a mountain located in southwestern Roanoke County, Virginia, directly south of Salem, Virginia. According to local lore, enslaved people in the western Roanoke Valley noted that the Sun was directly over the mountain roughly around noon local time. In 1995 and 1996, the Tour DuPont staged a time trial in the Roanoke Valley, the highlight of which was a ride over the steep, winding Twelve O'clock Knob Road. The north slope of the ridgeline formed by Poor Mountain, Twelve O'clock Knob and adjacent peaks such as Sugarloaf Mountain mark the southwestern boundary of the Roanoke Valley. This mountain should not be confused with Twelve O'Clock Knob in Patrick County, Virginia.

Preston House, also known as the John Cole House and Johns(t)on House, is a historic home located at Salem, Virginia. It was built about 1821, and is a two-story, five-bay, Federal style brick I-house dwelling. It features a single pile, central passage plan and original rear ell, its exterior end chimneys and decorative brick cornices.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, with a boundary amendment in 2006.
