East Hartford, Connecticut

Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field is a stadium in East Hartford, Connecticut. It is primarily used for football and soccer, and is the home field of the University of Connecticut (UConn) Huskies. In 2010, it was home to the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League. The stadium, which opened in 2003, was the first stadium used primarily by an NCAA Division I-A (now FBS) team to open in the 21st century. The permanent stadium capacity is 40,000, consisting of 38,066 permanent seats with a standing-room area in the scoreboard plaza that can accommodate up to 1,934 people. It also has a game day capability to add approximately 3,000 temporary seats as it did for UConn football vs. Michigan in 2013. Connecticut played on campus at Memorial Stadium in Storrs, before 2003. Rentschler Field was originally the name of the company airfield for Pratt & Whitney that formerly occupied the site. The airfield, which began operations in 1931, was named after Frederick Rentschler, who founded Pratt & Whitney in 1925 and also founded its parent company, United Technologies. It was originally used for test flights and maintenance operations, and later for corporate aviation. The 75-acre (30 ha) site was decommissioned as an airport in the 1990s, and donated to the state of Connecticut by United Technologies in 1999. A subsequent 65-acre donation by United Technologies in 2009 allowed for the construction of additional grass parking lots adjacent to the Stadium. Pursuant to a lease agreement with the State, UConn plays all its home football games at Rentschler Field.

East Hartford High School is a public high school of the East Hartford, Connecticut Public Schools. East Hartford High Schools shares its campus and many of its programs with the Connecticut International Baccalaureate Academy (CIBA), an honors college-preparatory high school for grades 9–12.

Connecticut IB Academy (CIBA) is an interdistrict magnet school located in East Hartford, Connecticut. It is next door to East Hartford High School; the two are connected by a bridge. The Connecticut IB Academy is an International Baccalaureate World School, offering the Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12 and the Middle Years Programme in grades 9 and 10. The school is located on the campus of East Hartford High School and the two schools share the same bell schedule, allowing students to take classes in either building. CIBA students also participate in all athletics, band orchestra and drama programs at East Hartford High School. CIBA's current principal is Kathleen Simoneau. CIBA is part of the East Hartford Public School system and is under the jurisdiction of Mr. Nathan Quesnel, Superintendent of East Hartford Public Schools. CIBA is a distinguished Blue Ribbon School, ranked among the best in America by the U.S. Department of Education. In 2009, CIBA was recognized by Magnet Schools of America as "the top secondary magnet school in the country."

The Makens Bemont House, commonly called the Huguenot House, is a historic house museum at 307 Burnside Avenue in East Hartford, Connecticut. Built in 1761, it is one of the town's few surviving 18th-century buildings, and is one of several buildings located in Martin Park that are operated by the Historical Society of East Hartford as the Historical Houses at Martin Park. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

East Hartford Yard is a classification yard in East Hartford, Connecticut. The yard was originally built by the New York and New England Railroad between 1881 and 1883. The opening of the yard marked the beginning of industrial development in East Hartford.By 1906, it was the largest railroad yard in New England. That year, it was further expanded by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. The yard lost its claim to being the largest railroad yard in New England to Cedar Hill Yard in 1920. In spite of the 1906 expansion, the yard was still struggling with congestion. As a result, the Hartford Yard was built across the Connecticut River, and connected to the East Hartford Yard.Today, the yard is owned and operated by the Connecticut Southern Railroad, and consists of only a few tracks.

The Central Avenue-Center Cemetery Historic District encompasses part of the town center of East Hartford, Connecticut. Although it was founded in the mid-17th century, it is now dominated by architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Center Cemetery is the town's oldest surviving property, and includes the grave of William Pitkin, a colonial governor. The district, including portions of Main Street and Central Avenue, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

St. John's Episcopal Church is a historic church building at 1160 Main Street in East Hartford, Connecticut. It was designed by Edward T. Potter and was built in 1867, and is a prominent local example of High Gothic Revival executed in stone. Its congregation, begun as an Episcopal mission in 1854, has recently been merged into the St. John's Episcopal Church in Vernon. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Downtown Main Street Historic District encompasses a well-preserved historical section of downtown East Hartford, Connecticut, United States. It extends along Main Street from between Burnside Avenue and Governor Street, and along Chapman Street to Chapman Place. Developed between about 1890 and 1945, its architecture encapsulates the town's transition from a main agrarian community to a modern suburb. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The Selden Brewer House is a historic house at Naubuc Avenue and Main Street in East Hartford, Connecticut. Built about 1827, it is a good local example of late Federal/early Greek Revival architecture. It was built and owned for many years by a prominent local tobacco-growing family. Originally located on High Street, it was moved to its present location in the 1980s, and now houses offices of the local historical society. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Connecticut River Academy (CTRA) is a magnet high school for grades 9 – 12, located in East Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. It is co-located with Goodwin University, a small 4-year college which moved to the site in 2005. Connecticut River Academy opened in 2010 and graduated its first 4-year class in 2014. CTRA's Sustainability Theme provides hands-on learning in Environmental Studies and Advanced Manufacturing. CTRA's Early College Model offers college and career experiences, including the opportunity to earn tuition-free college credits. The academy is accredited by New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

The First Congregational Church of East Hartford and Parsonage is a historic church at 829-837 Main Street in East Hartford, Connecticut. The congregation was founded around 1699 and the current church building was constructed around 1833. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The congregation is currently affiliated with the United Church of Christ.
