Sion (/ˈsaːjən/; IAST: Śīv [ʃiːʋ]) is a neighbourhood of Mumbai. In the 17th century the village formed the boundary between Mumbai and Salsette Island. The British named it marking the end of the city. The name remained even after Mumbai was joined to the Salsette and extended up to Mulund. One of the local historical places in Sion is a hilltop garden commonly known as Sion Fort or Sheevon Killa in the Marathi language.

Dharavi Assembly constituency is one of the ten constituencies of Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha located in the Mumbai City district. It is a part of the Mumbai South Central (Lok Sabha constituency) along with five other assembly constituencies, viz Sion Koliwada, Wadala, Mahim, from Mumbai City district and Chembur and Anushakti Nagar from Mumbai Suburban district.

Originally home to Mumbai's indigenous Koli community, it is also known as Koliwada. A colony was constructed for the rehabilitation of Sikh and Hindu refugees who came from North West Frontier Province of Pakistan after the Partition of IndiaToday, many of the buildings and tenements originally constructed for the refugees are in a dilapidated state, and are awaiting demolition and redevelopment.The local residents, however have been protesting the order for vacating the premises and their subsequent demolition, as they seek an alternative arrangement for renting and redevelopment.GTB Nagar, today, is renowned for its unique culture and cuisine, which has evolved over the years as an amalgamation of the influences of the indigenous Koli community and the Punjabi Hindu and Sikh migrants.

Dharavi has an area of just over 2.1 square kilometres (0.81 sq mi; 520 acres) and a population of about 1,000,000. With a population density of over 277,136/km2 (717,780/sq mi), Dharavi is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. The Dharavi slum was founded in 1884 during the British colonial era, and grew because the expulsion of factories and residents from the peninsular city centre by the colonial government and from the migration of rural Indians into urban Mumbai. For this reason, Dharavi is currently a highly diverse settlement religiously and ethnically.Dharavi has an active informal economy in which numerous household enterprises employ many of the slum residents—leather, textiles and pottery products are among the goods made inside Dharavi. The total annual turnover has been estimated at over US$1 billion.Dharavi has suffered from many epidemics and other disasters, including a widespread plague in 1896 which killed over half of the population of Bombay. Sanitation in the slums remains poor.
