Speicherstadt

HafenCity (German pronunciation: [ˈhaːfn̩ˌsɪtiː] (listen)) is a quarter in the borough of Hamburg-Mitte, Hamburg, Germany, Europe. It is located on the Elbe river island Grasbrook, on the former Port of Hamburg area. It was formally established in 2008 and also includes the historical Speicherstadt area, which since 2015 is an UNESCO World Heritage Site with the adjacent Kontorhausviertel. The main landmark of the HafenCity is the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. In a narrower sense, HafenCity Hamburg is a project of urban regeneration where the "Grosser Grasbrook" area of the former Hamburg free port is being revitalised with new hotels, shops, office buildings, and residential areas. The project is considered the largest urban redevelopment project in Europe by landmass (approximately 2.2 square kilometres (220 ha)). With the decreased economic importance of free ports in an era of European Union free trade, large container ships, and increased border security, the Hamburg free port was reduced in size, relieving the current HafenCity area from its restrictions. The ground-breaking ceremony was held on 20 June 2001, with the first quarter called "Am Dalmannkai/Sandtorkai" -next to the Elbphilharmonie- completed in 2009. When completely developed, the HafenCity area will be home to about 12,000 people and the workplace of 40,000 people. The prospect for completion is not tied down, but will probably be between 2025 and 2030.

Cremon was a marsh island in the Alster river at Hamburg, Germany. Today the site is marked by a street of the same name, in the Altstadt of Hamburg. The island was the first of the new town, and was outside the former city walls. The land was divided into long, narrow plots, on which typical Hamburg merchant houses were built. Each plot had access to the waterway later called Nikolaifleet. Behind the houses was a waterway called the Katharinenfleet, which was filled in during 1946. The waterway separating Cremon from the neighbouring island of Grimm, the Steckelhörnfleet, was also filled in after World War II. In 1246 Cremon was absorbed by the city of Hamburg, and together with Grimm formed the parish of the newly built St. Catherine's Church. The origin of the name is unclear, it may be traced back to a local farmer. The street name has existed since at least 1251 as Cremun; a 1289, document mentions platea Crymon. In 1937, having survived the Hamburg fire of 1842 and almost one hundred years of urban development, the designation "hanseatische Traditionsinsel" was obtained. First restoration work began in 1937, but the whole street fell victim to air raids on Hamburg in 1943. Still located between Fleet Street and Cremon 33-36 (formerly outer dike), is the last of the old historic warehouse of the 18th and early 19th century.

The Afghan Museum (German: Afghanisches Museum) was private museum of culture and cultural history of Afghanistan, situated in the historic and picturesque Speicherstadt (warehouse district) of Hamburg, Germany. The museum's mandate was to bring the authentic and traditional aspects of Afghan culture to life.

Built in 2000, the Hamburg Dungeon is a tourist attraction from a chain including the London Dungeon and Berlin Dungeon. It is the first of this brand to be built in mainland Europe. It provides a journey through Hamburg’s dark history in an actor led, interactive experience.

Miniatur Wunderland (German for 'miniature wonderland') is a model railway and miniature airport attraction in Hamburg, Germany, the largest of its kind in the world. The railway is located in the historic Speicherstadt neighbourhood of the city. In December 2021 the railway consisted of 16,138 m (52,946 ft) of track in H0 scale, divided into nine sections: Harz mountains, the fictitious town of Knuffingen, the Alps and Austria, Hamburg, America, Scandinavia, Switzerland, a replica of Hamburg Airport, Italy and South America. Of the 7,000 m2 (75,347 sq ft) of floorspace, the model occupies 1,545 m2 (16,630 sq ft).The exhibit includes 1,300 trains made up of over 10,000 carriages, over 100,000 vehicles, approx. 500,000 lights, 130,000 trees, and 400,000 human figurines. Planning is also in progress for the construction of sections for Central America and the Caribbean, Asia, England, Africa and The Netherlands.

Katharinenstraße 9, also Catharinenstraße 9, was a town house in the centre of Hamburg, Germany, built c. 1630-1640. In 1939 the house was added to the list of monuments in central Hamburg. It was not removed until 1954, 13 years after its destruction in 1941. The building was known for its stucco ceiling, commissioned between 1716 and 1720 by the building's then owner (and later mayor of Hamburg) John Anderson the Elder. The stucco was most likely by the Italian Carlo Enrico Brenno, known to have worked in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. The hamburgmuseum (Hamburg History Museum) has a reconstruction of the ceiling, made from a cast of the original, which includes the original central painting, by Johann Moritz Riesenberger the Younger. The painting celebrates scholarship and art. The ceiling was restored in 2004–2005.

St. Catherine's Church (German: St. Katharinen) is one of the five principal Lutheran churches (Hauptkirchen) of Hamburg, Germany. The base of its spire, dating from the 13th century, is the second oldest building preserved in the city, after the lighthouse on Neuwerk island. It is situated on an island near what was formerly the southern boundary of the medieval city, opposite the historic harbour area on the Elbe river. It traditionally served as the church of the seamen.

Grimm 31 was a Hamburg merchant's house on the island of Grimm in the center of Hamburg, Germany. The house was built in the first half of the 16th century and destroyed in 1943 by bombs. It is known mainly for its ornate wooden ceiling from the second half of the 17th century, which has been in the Hamburg History Museum since 1922. The ceiling was commissioned by the then owner, the merchant Christian Hasenbank. The fully decorated pine ceiling was one of many examples in Hamburg merchant houses, but is probably the only 17th century example to remain accessible. The painting is by an unknown artist on pine boards, 151 of which are still preserved. In the Hamburg Museum it is reconstructed on 17 joists with a further 68 boards added. The Baroque artwork includes putti and other figures in playful and bawdy acts. Within the image, there are several jokes: it shows Cain and Abel, referring to an old Hamburg saying, that "The Grimm" is the oldest street in the world, because according to the Bible, Cain slew Abel "im Grimm" ("in a rage"). The house's 1691 portal was typical of the houses in Grimm and Cremon. As with other houses from the late 17th Century, the portal and windows were almost equal elements of the facade. The portal itself was adorned with plant motifs and an angel's head. The mermaids, who also graced the portal, were probably the only ones of their kind in Hamburg.

The U4 is a line of the Hamburg U-Bahn, which opened in 2012, serving 12 stations. It is the shortest line of the network, with a length of 11.9 kilometres (7.39 mi) and from Jungfernstieg to Billstedt it shares tracks with the U2.

The U3 is a line of the Hamburg U-Bahn. The ring line with a length of 20.68 kilometres (12.85 mi) serves 25 stations. The first part opened in 1912. The line starts in Wandsbek-Gartenstadt and leads via Barmbek into the ring passing through the city center and back to Barmbek.

Kuehne Logistics University – Wissenschaftliche Hochschule für Logistik und Unternehmensführung (KLU) is a private, state-recognized business school (Wirtschaftshochschule) based in Hamburg, Germany. It was founded by the Kühne Stiftung (Kuehne Foundation), based in Schindellegi, Switzerland. The contracting body is the Kühne Logistics University gGmbH. The non-profit foundation supports education and further education as well as research and science in transport and logistics. KLU comprises two departments: "Department of Operations and Technology" and "Department of Leadership and Management", and it spans the whole gamut of university education and executive education, from bachelor's degrees and three master's programs to the structured PhD program. KLU is located at Hamburg's HafenCity area and its classes are taught in English.

The Church of St. Nicholas (German: St.-Nikolai-Kirche) was a Gothic Revival cathedral that was formerly one of the five Lutheran Hauptkirchen (main churches) in the city of Hamburg, Germany. The original chapel, a wooden building, was completed in 1195. It was replaced by a brick church in the 14th century, which was eventually destroyed by fire in 1842. The church was completely rebuilt by 1874, and was the tallest building in the world from 1874 to 1876. It was designed by the English architect George Gilbert Scott. The bombing of Hamburg in World War II destroyed the bulk of the church. The removal of the rubble left only its crypt, its site and tall-spired tower, largely hollow save for a large set of bells. These ruins continue to serve as a memorial and an important architectural landmark. When Hamburg residents mention the Nikolaikirche, it is generally to this church that they are referring, and not the new Hauptkirche dedicated to Saint Nicholas in the Harvestehude district. The remains of the old church are the second-tallest structure in Hamburg. In 2005, an elevator was installed to a 75.3-metre-high (247 ft) platform.
