SM UB-78 was a German Type UB III submarine or U-boat in the German Imperial Navy (German: Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. She was commissioned into the German Imperial Navy on 20 October 1917 as SM UB-78. Mined off Dover on 19 April 1918 all 35 crew lost.

SM UA was a U-boat of the Imperial German Navy during World War I. Built as the fifth submarine of the Norwegian A class the boat was launched 9 May 1914 and confiscated by the German government after the outbreak of World War I on 5 August 1914. Commissioned as SM U 0 on 14 August 1914 the boat was renamed UA two weeks later and assigned to coastal protection. In 1916 UA was transferred to the Uschule (Submarine School). UA was surrendered to the Allies at Harwich on 24 November 1918 in accordance with the requirements of the Armistice with Germany. She was lost on tow off Folkestone in April 1919 while being transferred from Harwich to a French port. The wreck was identified by archaeologist Innes McCartney in 2013.

SS Leicester was a passenger and cargo vessel built for the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1891.

The Admiralty Pier Turret, or Dover Turret, is an enclosed armoured turret built in 1882 on the western breakwater of Dover Harbour in southeast England. It contains two Fraser RML 16 inch 80 ton guns, the biggest installed in the United Kingdom. Declared obsolete in 1902, it is currently part of the port and inaccessible, though the guns remain in place.

Dover Marine War Memorial stands in the old Dover Marine Station in the Western Docks, Dover, England. The port has effectively been closed for several years; it is currently used as a berthing station for cruise liners, and is only open when a liner is in dock.

Shakespeare Tunnel is a railway tunnel carrying the South Eastern Main Line between Folkestone and Dover in Kent, UK. Completed in 1884, it was bored beneath the chalk Shakespeare Cliff along the south eastern coastline of England and allows services into and out of Dover Priory railway station. Shakespeare Tunnel was designed by William Cubitt during the construction of the South Eastern Main Line from London in 1844 in a gothic style. Significant works were completed in 2009 to allow high speed Class 395 trains to operate services through the tunnel, connecting Dover to London via High Speed 1.

On 30 October 2022, a petrol bomb attack was perpetrated against a Border Force centre for processing migrants in Dover, Kent, England. Two people suffered minor injuries. After the attack, the suspect, a 66-year-old man from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, drove to a nearby petrol station where he killed himself.

Archcliffe Fort is a former military installation in Dover, England. It is situated at the base of the Dover Western Heights and overlooks the approaches to the port of Dover. A watchtower was erected on the site in 1370 but this was replaced with a more substantial fort by Henry VIII by 1539. The fort fell into disrepair but was renovated in 1588 due to concerns over the Spanish Armada. The Stuart kings James VI and I and Charles I made improvements to the fort and it was heavily garrisoned by Charles II in the aftermath of the 1660 Stuart Restoration. Invasion scares during the long eighteenth century saw further improvements to the defences. The fort was manned during the First World War but in the 1920s much of it was demolished to allow for improvements to be made to the South Eastern Main Line railway. The fort was deemed obsolete by the time of the Second World War and was decommissioned in 1956, after which further demolition took place to widen the A20 road. The surviving structure includes two ramparts and two complete corner bastions, together with some modern buildings in the interior. The fort is used by the Emmaus Community to house formerly homeless people and operates a furniture workshop and retail centre.

Samphire Hoe is a country park situated 2 miles (3 km) west of Dover in Kent in southeast England. The park was created by using 4.9 million cubic metres of chalk marl from the Channel Tunnel excavations and is found at the bottom of a section of the White Cliffs of Dover. The site is owned by Getlink, and managed by the White Cliffs Countryside Project.It is accessible by the public via a single-lane road tunnel controlled by traffic lights, which crosses over the South Eastern Main Line that is running in the Shakespeare Cliff tunnel underneath. Visitor facilities are provided, including car parking, toilets and a café.

Shakespeare Cliff Halt is a private halt station on the South Eastern Main Line. It is located to the western end of the dual bore Shakespeare Cliff tunnel on the South Eastern Main Line to Folkestone, England. It never appeared in any public timetable and has been used successively by railway staff, coal miners, the military and Channel Tunnel workers.

HMS Glatton and her sister ship Gorgon were originally built as coastal defence ships for the Royal Norwegian Navy, as Bjørgvin and Nidaros respectively. She was requisitioned from Norway at the beginning of World War I, but was not completed until 1918 although she had been launched over three years earlier. On 16 September 1918, before she had even gone into action, she suffered a large fire in one of her 6-inch magazines, and had to be scuttled to prevent an explosion of her main magazines that would have devastated Dover. Her wreck was partially salvaged in 1926, and moved into a position in the northeastern end of the harbour where it would not obstruct traffic. It was subsequently buried by landfill underneath the current car ferry terminal.

Dover Lifeboat Station is a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboat station located in the town of Dover in the English county of Kent. The station first opened in 1837, coming under the RNLI’s control in 1855.Among the awards won by Dover's crews over the years are 19 RNLI medals for bravery, 6 silver and 13 bronze, the last being awarded in 1998.
