Carvins Cove, Virginia

Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is a 12,700-acre (51 km2) city park in Botetourt and Roanoke counties, Virginia. Managed by the Western Virginia Water Authority and the City of Roanoke, it is the fifth-largest city park in the United States, and the second-largest city park managed by a municipality. Within the park's boundary is Carvins Cove Reservoir and also the main ridgeline of Brushy Mountain, which rises about 1200 feet above the lake's waterline.

Hollins University is a private university in Hollins, Virginia. Founded in 1842 as Valley Union Seminary in the historical settlement of Botetourt Springs, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education for women in the United States. Hollins enrolls about 800 undergraduate and graduate students. As Virginia's first chartered women's college, undergraduate programs are female-only. Men are admitted to the graduate-level programs. Hollins is known for its undergraduate and graduate writing programs, which have produced Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Annie Dillard, former U.S. poet laureate Natasha Trethewey, and Henry S. Taylor. Botetourt Springs (originally: Sulphur Spring Tract) is a mineral spring and was a historical settlement on the border of Roanoke County, Virginia and Botetourt County, Virginia, United States. The spring is located 12 mi (19 km) from Fincastle. Botetourt Springs was originally settled in the mid-18th century, growing as a mineral spring resort during the summer, especially after the 1820s.In its time, it was one of the best known mineral springs in Virginia, and one of the chief sulphuric thermal springs in America. Notable visitors included General Andrew Jackson and General Lafayette.

Hollins is a census-designated place (CDP) in Botetourt and Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. Hollins covers much of the area known locally as "North County". The population was 15,574 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area is also the home of Hollins University in addition to four properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Black Horse Tavern-Bellvue Hotel and Office, Harshbarger House, the Hollins College Quadrangle, and Old Tombstone.

Old Tombstone, also known as the Denton Monument, is a folk art tombstone listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register in the town of Hollins, Virginia, United States. Located in the Tombstone Cemetery, just east of Plantation Road (Virginia State Route 115), Old Tombstone is noted for its folk art elements as being unique to Southwest Virginia.

Black Horse Tavern-Bellvue Hotel and Office is a historic inn and tavern complex located at Hollins, Roanoke County, Virginia. The complex consists of the Black Horse Tavern (c. 1782), the Greek Revival style Bellvue Hotel (also known as Kyle's Hotel) (c. 1854) and the temple-fronted, Greek Revival style brick Office (c. 1840). Other contributing resources on the property include a spring house (c. 1900) and a shed (c. 1930). The Black Horse Tavern is a simple, one story, three-bay log structure. The Bellvue Hotel is a two-story, five-bay, brick structure with a central-passage, double-pile plan. The office is a simple, one-story, one-bay brick structure. It features a wide frieze band and a front portico with a pedimented gable supported by squared Doric order columns. The buildings housed a school for physically and mentally handicapped children and the property became known as Bellevue School during the mid-20Ih century. The school closed in 1976, and the buildings house a single family residence.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Nininger's Mill, also known as Tinker Mill, is a historic grist mill located near Daleville, Botetourt County, Virginia. The mill was built about 1847, and is a three-story, brick structure with a gable roof. Wood-frame additions added in the 20th century, are found on the north and east walls. Also on the property is a contributing simple one-story, wood-frame late 19th-century house. The mill was converted to a restaurant in 1980.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Harshbarger House is a historic home located at Hollins, Roanoke County, Virginia. It is a two-story dwelling consisting of a late 18th-century, stone, two-story, one-room section with an early 19th-century brick addition. The stone section was built in 1797, and the brick section was added about 1825. A kitchen is attached to the main house by a modern addition.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Lord Botetourt High School (LBHS) is a high school in Daleville, Virginia. It was built in 1958 and opened in the fall of 1959. LBHS is one of two high schools in Botetourt County, the other being James River High School in Buchanan. The school is named for Norborne Berkeley, 4th Baron Botetourt, the governor of Virginia from 1768 to 1770. Athletic teams are known as the Cavaliers, and the school colors are scarlet and silver. As of 2019, LBHS had 69 faculty members serving 1,052 students in grades 9 through 12.
