Alto de Santana

Baruel Mansion (Portuguese: Palacete Baruel) is a mansion built in the 19th century, located in Alto de Santana, northern area of São Paulo city. The construction had been the headquarters of the Baruel estate, a farm where rice, beans, corn and sugarcane were grown with slave labour. The wealth of the owner is perceived in the buildings that make up the area.The estate was 24,250 square metres (261,000 sq ft) in area, and after the death of Mr. Baruel the property was divided and sold in lots. The farm included the house of Dona Maria, daughter of Mr. Baruel, built in 1925, which today houses the Narbal Fontes Library. The Baruel were a traditional and influential family of Santana. Near the farm, in the current Voluntários da Pátria street is located in the Chapel of Santa Cruz, built in 1895 by Pedro Doll and the Baruel family. Built in the Norman style, the mansion is considered a historic site, it saves time and remnants of the neighbourhood. It has never been inhabited. Currently the building is a physiotherapy clinic.

It was opened by Governor Mário Covas on 29 April 1998, along with stations Tucuruvi and Parada Inglesa, in the Line 1 north expansion project, initiated in 1996.

Cemitério Municipal de Santana (Municipal Cemetery of Santana), popularly known as Chora Menino (English: cry boy), is a cemetery located in the northeastern zone of São Paulo in the district of Santana, and is one of the oldest cemeteries in Brazil. It was officially recognized as a cemetery in 1897 and has an area of 38,485m². The local Jewish community used the location as a cemetery until 1970 known as Cemitério Israelita de Santana.The name Chora Menino comes from a local tale about a woman who is said to have lived in the region who threw abandoned newborn babies into the valley alongside the cemetery for vultures to eat.The cemetery with an area of 41,000m² and already with more than 1000 graves, now his area is of 38,485m² with approximately 12,000 graves and 76 mausoleums.The cemetery is located on Rua Nova dos Portugueses in the Imirim neighborhood.

Carandiru Penitentiary, officially São Paulo House of Detention (Portuguese: Casa de Detenção de São Paulo) was a prison located in São Paulo, Brazil. The prison was designed and built by Samuel das Neves in 1920, when it was considered a model-prison to meet the new demands of the 1890 criminal code. It was operational from 1956 to 2002 and, at its peak, was South America's largest penitentiary, housing over 8,000 inmates. In 1992 it was the site of the Carandiru massacre. Drauzio Varella, a noted Brazilian physician, volunteered as an unpaid physician in Carandiru from 1989 to 2001, in particular to address its AIDS epidemic. He wrote a book, Estação Carandiru (English: Carandiru Station), describing his own experiences there and the dreadful conditions of the inmates. The book was later made into a movie (Carandiru, directed by Hector Babenco), and both were highly regarded by critics and the public. The prison was demolished on December 8, 2002. One block was left intact to be used as a museum, now open to public and accessible via Carandiru Metro Station (Estação Carandiru). Today the Parque da Juventude complex is located on the site of the former penitentiary.

Parada Inglesa is a metro station on São Paulo Metro Line 1-Blue, located in the district of Tucuruvi, in São Paulo. Belongs to the Line 1 north expansion plan, initiated in 1996. It would be named Paulicéia Station, according to the original project. It was opened on 29 April 1998, along with stations Jardim São Paulo-Ayrton Senna and Tucuruvi. The project of the station was one of the awarded in the 5th Architecture Biennal of Buenos Aires, in the category Prémio Especial Del Jurado (Special Jury Award).
