Moorside Edge

Moorside Edge transmitting station, opened in 1931, was originally constructed to radiate the BBC's North Regional (from 17 May on 626 kHz) and National Programmes (from 12 July on 995 kHz).It is – at 200 kW – one of the most powerful mediumwave radio transmitters in Britain. Formed of two 158-metre-high steel lattice towers, it is located just above Moorside Edge (grid reference SE070154). Other nearby transmitting stations are Holme Moss (11.56 km, bearing 168.17°) and Emley Moor (15.4 km, bearing 99.41°). As with most mediumwave transmitters, a good "signal earth" is important and this is assured by the waterlogged nature of the ground on which it is built. The site's location on the Pennine Hills means that signals from Moorside Edge can be received at very long distances: as far north as Scotland, as far south as the Midlands, as far west as Dublin, and well beyond the country's eastern (North Sea) coast. Wilberlee is a hamlet in the Colne Valley, in the Kirklees district, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. It is near the town of Huddersfield and the village of Slaithwaite. Wilberlee has a school called Wilberlee Junior and Infant School.

Pole Moor is a hamlet between Outlane and Scammonden in Kirklees, England. It is situated on a high moorland plateau between Slaithwaite and Wholestone Moors in the South Pennines.

Slaithwaite railway station serves the town of Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire, England. The station is 4 miles (6 km) west of Huddersfield railway station on the Huddersfield Line between Huddersfield and Manchester Victoria. The station is situated between the centre of the town and the "Hill Top" residential area. The station has two platforms with a car park and bus stop at the approach to Platform 2. The current station was opened on 13 December 1982 by Metro (the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive) and British Rail. The Huddersfield-bound platform is on the site of an earlier four platform station which opened in 1849 and closed on 7 October 1968. The current Stalybridge-bound platform is on the site of the old goods yard. This station is operated by Northern Trains but Transpennine Express is the sole operator serving the station.

Slaithwaite Town Hall, also known as Empire House is a former municipal building in Lewisham Road in the town of Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire, England. The building, which served as the offices of Colne Valley Urban District Council, is now a business centre.

Slaithwaite (, locally 'Slaithwaite' ; Old Norse for "timber-fell thwaite/clearing") is a town and former civil parish in the Colne Valley area of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees, in West Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it lies in the Colne Valley, lying across the River Colne and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, approximately 5 miles (8 km) south-west of Huddersfield.

Scammonden or Dean Head was a village close to Huddersfield, in the Dean Head Valley, England, before the valley was flooded to create Scammonden Reservoir in the 1960s. The M62 motorway crosses the dam wall and then passes through a cutting to the west over which Scammonden Bridge carries the B6114. The Chapel of St Bartholomew still exists, as does the old vicarage, which is now home to Scammonden Sailing Club.

The Black Brook is a small river in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. The Black Brook rises near the border of Calderdale and Kirklees next to Scammonden Dam. It flows downwards through Stainland Dean, and then between Greetland and Stainland. Most of the river, at this point, forms a parish border between the parishes of Greetland and Stainland. The Holywell Brook flows into the Black Brook before flowing into the River Calder at West Vale. The combined length of the two brooks is 8.85 miles (14.24 km) and they drain an area of 12 square miles (30 km2).The valley that the Black Brook flows through is named the Blackburne Valley.

Scammonden Reservoir is a water reservoir in West Yorkshire, England. Its water surface area when full is 42 hectares (0.16 sq mi). The level of the bellmouth overflow above sea level is 252 metres (827 ft). The reservoir holds 78,000,000,000 litres (1.7×1010 imp gal; 2.1×1010 US gal). Its length is 1.4 kilometres (0.9 mi).

Scapegoat Hill is a small village 5 miles (8 km) west of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. It is near to the villages of Slaithwaite and Golcar. The village together with nearby Bolster Moor has a population of 1,246. This Pennine village is 328 metres above sea level at its highest point (near the millennium stone). It is also nearby the Moorside Edge Radio transmitter. The first recorded mention is from 1638 in the records of Huddersfield Parish Church on the death of a child of a William Aneley. At that date, the place was called 'Slipcoat' (or Slippery Coat) Hill. The first record of the name 'Scapegoat Hill' occurs in an Enclosure notice placed in the Leeds Mercury in 1820. Although the first Ordnance Survey map (of 1843) uses the old name, 'Scapegoat Hill' was in regular use after 1820. The village grew up around the woollen trade, and, in spite of having no mill, continued to grow in size throughout the nineteenth century. In fact, handloom weavers are recorded here as late as 1935. Throughout the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth, the village was a very strong centre of baptism opening a church as a daughter of the Pole Moor Church 1871 and moving to its present building in 1900.

Slack Roman Fort was a castellum near Outlane, to the west of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, England. Its site is a scheduled monument. The ruins of the fort which lay alongside the Pennine section of the Roman road from Deva Victrix (Chester) to Eboracum (York) are no longer visible. The fort may have been the Cambodunum mentioned as a station on this route in the Antonine Itinerary.Archaeological digs indicate the fort was constructed of turf and wood to defend the Roman road in the time of Agricola in AD 79. Outside the fort walls was a stone bath-house which was extended around AD 104 and AD 120. A vicus or small settlement of wooden huts grew outside the fort.In December 2016, a retired professor from Bangor University, Peter Field, hypothesised that the fort's site was a potential location for the mythical Camelot.

Sowood is a village in the civil parish of Stainland and District, in the Calderdale district, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The village falls within the Greetland and Stainland ward of Calderdale Council. It is approximately 2.3 miles (3.7 km) south-west of Elland, 4.1 miles (6.6 km) north-west of Huddersfield and 4.2 miles (6.8 km) south of Halifax.
