Scammonden

Pole Moor is a hamlet between Outlane and Scammonden in Kirklees, England. It is situated on a high moorland plateau between Slaithwaite and Wholestone Moors in the South Pennines.

Scammonden Reservoir is a water reservoir in West Yorkshire, England. Its water surface area when full is 42 hectares (0.16 sq mi). The level of the bellmouth overflow above sea level is 252 metres (827 ft). The reservoir holds 78,000,000,000 litres (1.7×1010 imp gal; 2.1×1010 US gal). Its length is 1.4 kilometres (0.9 mi).

The Black Brook is a small river in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. The Black Brook rises near the border of Calderdale and Kirklees next to Scammonden Dam. It flows downwards through Stainland Dean, and then between Greetland and Stainland. Most of the river, at this point, forms a parish border between the parishes of Greetland and Stainland. The Holywell Brook flows into the Black Brook before flowing into the River Calder at West Vale. The combined length of the two brooks is 8.85 miles (14.24 km) and they drain an area of 12 square miles (30 km2).The valley that the Black Brook flows through is named the Blackburne Valley.

Scammonden Bridge, also known locally as the Brown Cow Bridge (after the nearby Brown Cow Inn, now closed), spans the Deanhead cutting carrying the B6114 (the former A6025) Elland to Buckstones road over the M62 motorway in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England. The bridge and Scammonden Reservoir to the west are named after Scammonden, the village that was flooded to accommodate the reservoir whose dam carries the motorway. On opening, the bridge was the longest concrete arch bridge in the UK.

The Moorside Edge is a steeply sloping area of moorland at grid reference SE070154 just north of Slaithwaite and about 5 miles (8 km) west of Huddersfield in the Kirklees District of West Yorkshire, England. It descents from the relatively flat summit of Pole Moor into the valley of the River Colne. Just above the edge itself is the Moorside Edge transmitting station.

Wilberlee is a hamlet in the Colne Valley, in the Kirklees district, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. It is near the town of Huddersfield and the village of Slaithwaite. Wilberlee has a school called Wilberlee Junior and Infant School.

Moorside Edge transmitting station, opened in 1931, was originally constructed to radiate the BBC's North Regional (from 17 May on 626 kHz) and National Programmes (from 12 July on 995 kHz).It is – at 200 kW – one of the most powerful mediumwave radio transmitters in Britain. Formed of two 158-metre-high steel lattice towers, it is located just above Moorside Edge (grid reference SE070154). Other nearby transmitting stations are Holme Moss (11.56 km, bearing 168.17°) and Emley Moor (15.4 km, bearing 99.41°). As with most mediumwave transmitters, a good "signal earth" is important and this is assured by the waterlogged nature of the ground on which it is built. The site's location on the Pennine Hills means that signals from Moorside Edge can be received at very long distances: as far north as Scotland, as far south as the Midlands, as far west as Dublin, and well beyond the country's eastern (North Sea) coast. Barkisland () is a village in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Ripponden, 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Sowerby Bridge and 4 miles (6.4 km) south-west of Halifax town centre. The village is in the Ryburn ward of Calderdale. Barkisland has a school, a church, a post office and a cricket club that plays in the Huddersfield Cricket League. There are two pubs in Barkisland, The Fleece Countryside Inn and The Griffin Inn.

Sowood is a village in the civil parish of Stainland and District, in the Calderdale district, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The village falls within the Greetland and Stainland ward of Calderdale Council. It is approximately 2.3 miles (3.7 km) south-west of Elland, 4.1 miles (6.6 km) north-west of Huddersfield and 4.2 miles (6.8 km) south of Halifax.

Deanhead Reservoir is a reservoir near Scammonden, in the metropolitan district of Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England. It is named after Dean Head, a village that was mostly submerged during construction of the dam. Construction started in 1838 and it opened a year later, almost 140 years before Scammonden Reservoir (its downstream neighbour) was opened in 1971. Water flowing out of Deanhead forms Black Burne Brook which now feeds into Scammonden Water. Deanhead reservoir was originally constructed to supply water to the factories in the Blackburn Valley that was downstream of the reservoir. During the 1995 drought, the outlines of foundations of buildings in the village were visible. Deanhead also is the name of a Pennine pass to the south of the reservoir, which carries the A640 from Huddersfield to Denshaw, following the course of a Roman road.

Ripponden and Barkisland railway station was opened by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway on the Rishworth branch in 1878 as Ripponden. Ripponden is in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. Its name was changed to Ripponden and Barkisland on 1 December 1891. The Lancashire and Yorkshire railway was absorbed by the London and North Western Railway on 1 January 1922, which became one of the constituents of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway on grouping in 1923. The latter company closed the station to passengers on 8 July 1929 and British Railways ceased goods traffic in 1958 after which the line was dismantled. The branch connected Sowerby Bridge to the north with the terminus Rishworth to the south.

Rishworth railway station was a railway station on the Rishworth branch, built by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, to serve the village of Rishworth in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. It opened in 1881 and closed to passenger services in 1929; goods traffic ceased in 1953.While the station was open, services ran from and to Sowerby Bridge north of Rishworth. A planned extension of the line towards Rochdale was never built.None of the buildings are still standing intact, however, some station remains can be seen on the overgrown site, as well as the platform.
