Siege of Montauban

Montauban (US: , French: [mɔ̃tobɑ̃] ; Occitan: Montalban [muntalˈβa]) is a commune in the Tarn-et-Garonne department, region of Occitania, Southern France. It is the capital of the department and lies 50 kilometres (31 mi) north of Toulouse. Montauban is the most populated town in Tarn-et-Garonne, and the sixth most populated of Occitanie behind Toulouse, Montpellier, Nîmes, Perpignan and Béziers. In 2019, there were 61,372 inhabitants, called Montalbanais. The town has been classified Ville d’art et d’histoire (City of art and history) since 2015. The town, built mainly of a reddish brick, stands on the right bank of the Tarn at its confluence with the Tescou.

It was disbanded following the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. It comprised part of the commune of Montauban.

Montauban Cathedral (French: Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Montauban) is a Roman Catholic cathedral and a national monument of France located in the town of Montauban. It is the seat of the Bishopric of Montauban, created in 1317, abolished by the Concordat of 1801 and transferred to the Archdiocese of Toulouse, and restored in 1822. The cathedral of Montauban was Protestant from the start of the Wars of Religion until Catholicism returned to Montauban in 1629. The construction of a new church, the present building, was agreed after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. The cornerstone of the new cathedral was laid in 1692, and the church was consecrated in 1739. Initially, the architect François d'Orbay supervised the works. When he died in 1697, he was succeeded by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Robert de Cotte. The towers frame the west façade, a pure product that applies all the conventions of classical art, i.e. an Ionic facade with a peristyle mounted by statues of the Four Evangelists which replaced the original statues. The interior is decorated with pilasters, metopes and triglyphs, and the cathedral's strict and elegant vertical lines make it a typical example of classical architecture. A famous painting by Ingres, "The Vow of Louis XIII", hangs in the north arm of the transept.

The Musée Ingres Bourdelle (In English: Ingres Bourdelle Museum) is located in Montauban, France. It houses a collection of artworks and artifacts related to two famous artists natives of that town, painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, as well as their own collections and other works of art.

The Monument aux Morts de Montauban is an 1894 bronze sculpture by Antoine Bourdelle. His romantic vision of the monument generated many violent oppositions. Auguste Rodin's intervention in 1897 enabled Bourdelle to do this sculpture without any compromise. The monument was erected in Montauban, in the department of Tarn-et-Garonne, in 1902.

Communauté d'agglomération Grand Montauban is the communauté d'agglomération, an intercommunal structure, centred on the city of Montauban. It is located in the Tarn-et-Garonne department, in the Occitania region, southern France. Created in 1999, its seat is in Montauban. Its area is 280.9 km2. Its population was 78,505 in 2019, of which 61,372 in Montauban proper.

The Tescou (French: Le Tescou) is a tributary of the Tarn in the basin of the Garonne in southern France. It flows 48.8 kilometres (30.3 mi) through the departments of Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne and Haute-Garonne.The source is near Gaillac in the Massif Central, and its confluence with the Tarn is near Montauban in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in the Occitanie administrative region. In 2014 construction work began on the Sivens Dam (Barrage de Sivens), to supply irrigation for local farms.On 25 October 2014, Rémi Fraisse, a 21-year-old student protesting against the Sivens Dam across the Tescou, was killed after being hit in the back by a grenade, sparking further violent protests.

The Diocese of Montauban (Latin: Dioecesis Montis Albani; French: Diocèse de Montauban) is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in France. The diocese is coextensive with Tarn-et-Garonne, and is currently a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Toulouse. The episcopal seat of the Diocese of Montauban is in Montauban Cathedral. Suppressed under the Concordat of 1802 and divided between the three neighbouring dioceses of Toulouse, Agen, and Cahors, Montauban was re-established by imperial decree of 1809, but this measure was not approved by the Holy See. Re-established by the Concordat of 1817, the diocese did not receive a bishop approved by the Papacy until 1824.

The Canton of Montauban-3 is one of the 15 cantons of the Tarn-et-Garonne department, in southern France. Since the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015, the canton covers the southeastern part of the commune of Montauban.
