The 2001 Poe Fire was a destructive wildfire in the U.S. state of California's Butte County. After igniting on September 6, the fire burned 8,333 acres (3,372 hectares) and destroyed at least 133 structures in the Big Bend and Yankee Hill areas north of Oroville before it was fully contained on September 12, 2001. The fire was the most destructive incident of California's 2001 wildfire season.The fire started when a tree fell on a Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) power line, and the incident was the subject of a civil lawsuit by more than a hundred plaintiffs that PG&E eventually settled for several million dollars.

Nelson Bar is a former settlement in Butte County, California. It was located 5.25 miles (8.45 km) southeast of Paradise on the West Branch of the Feather River, at an elevation of 974 feet (297 m). It is now under Lake Oroville. The Nelson Bar bridge spanned the West Branch of the Feather River until Oroville Dam was built. It was submerged under Lake Oroville.

Cherokee is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Butte County, California. It is an area inhabited by Maidu Indians prior to the gold rush, but that takes its name from a band of Cherokee prospectors who perfected a mining claim on the site. The population was 69 at the 2010 census. It lies at an elevation of 1306 feet (398 m). Possibly the site of the historic gold mine, on the 1994 Cherokee, California 7.5-minute quadrangle, a feature named "Cherokee Placer Mine" exists about 0.65 miles southwest of the above coordinates. USGS identifies Cherokee Flat and Drytown as historic variant names for the community. The town is located on Cherokee Road off State Route 70. Today, Cherokee now consists of a museum and a Cherokee cemetery, as well as a few houses. The Cherokee Heritage and Museum Association maintains both. The ZIP Code is 95965. Adventist Health Feather River, also known as Feather River Hospital, is a 101-bed acute care hospital located in the town of Paradise, in Butte County, California, with a wide array of outpatient departments and services designed to meet the health care needs of Paradise, Magalia, and neighboring communities. It was severely damaged in the November 2018 Camp Fire and is currently closed.

The North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve of 3,315 acres (13.42 km2) located three miles (5 km) north of Oroville, in Butte County, northern California. The land was acquired by the state in October, 1993.

The school's curriculum is organized into 13 subject area departments, and students can take up to six classes a day. Senior students can enroll concurrently at Butte Community College. Sports offered by the school are football, basketball, volleyball, cross country, swimming, tennis, soccer, track, golf, wrestling, baseball, softball, and cheerleading.

Oregon City, formerly Bloomingdale and Hengy, is a ghost town located between Oroville and Cherokee in Butte County, California. One of the first mining camps in the county, it was established in the autumn of 1848 by a party of Oregonians, who came to California over the Applegate and Lassen trails. Little more than a year later their captain, Peter H. Burnett, became the first civil Governor of California. For a time, Oregon City prospered as a gold mining and supply center, then it declined into virtual oblivion. It lies 1,184 feet (361 m) above mean sea level. The Hengy post office operated from 1894 to 1900 and from 1901 to 1902; it was named after the first postmaster, Jessie Hengy. The Bloomingdale post office operated from 1902 to 1905.The site of the camp is now a California Historical Landmark.The Oregon City Covered Bridge, also known as the Castleberry Covered Bridge, is located near Oregon City.

Paradise is a town in Butte County, California, United States, in the Sierra Nevada foothills above the northeastern Sacramento Valley. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 4,764, down from the 26,218 recorded in the 2010 census. On November 8, 2018, a major wildfire, the Camp Fire, destroyed most of Paradise and much of the adjacent communities of Magalia, Butte Creek Canyon, and Concow. After the Camp Fire, the population declined by more than 90%. In January 2019, the state of California reported 4,600 residents, and a door-to-door count in April 2019 found 2,034.

Dogtown Nugget was the first large gold nugget found in California. It was found in Willard Gulch on April 12, 1859, and weighed in at 54 troy pounds (20 kg). Willard Gulch is in the southern part of Magalia, California in Butte County part of the Feather River canyon. The town of Magalia was called Mountain View, Butte Mills and Dogtown in 1859, the towns joined to become Magalia later. The site of the find was called Dogtown as Susan Basset, a miner's daughter, had many dogs that were in the area near the find. Hydraulic Mine worker Chauncey Wright found the pure gold nugget in the mud. Chauncey Wright worked for three partners that owned the mine: Phineas Willard, Ira Weatherbee and Wyatt M. Smith. Once found the nugget was taken to the town for display by a donkey. The nugget was taken to San Francisco, and melted down to make a 49-pound gold bar. The gold bar then was sold to the San Francisco Mint for $10,600. The discovery site is California Historical Landmark #771. A plaque monument was placed near the site by Native Daughters of the Golden West, Grand Parlor, Centennial Parlor 295, on June 12, 1955. In 2023 United States dollars the Dogtown Nugget is valued at $1.2 Million. In 1869 a larger 106-pound nugget was found at the Sierra Buttes Mine in Sierra City.

Butte Valley is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) named for a former settlement in Butte County, California, United States. It is located 5.5 miles (8.9 km) southeast of Chico. A post office operated at Butte Valley from 1861 to 1871, when it was re-located to Durham. Butte Valley sits at an elevation of 351 feet (107 m). The 2010 United States census reported Butte Valley's population is 899.
