La Crosse Queen

The La Crosse River is a 61.3-mile-long (98.7 km) tributary of the Mississippi River in southwestern Wisconsin in the United States.

The Statue of Hiawatha was a monument located at Riverside Park in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The statue was created by Anthony Zimmerhakl and overlooked the convergence of three rivers at Riverside Park: the Mississippi River, Black River, and the La Crosse River. It had been built with the intention of drawing tourism to the area and was based on a fictionalized version of Hiawatha, a 16th-century Native American chief who had no connection to local tribes. Long standing public debate about whether the statue was offensive or presented a caricature based on stereotypes of Native Americans eventually led to its removal in 2020, nearly 60 years after it was erected.

Riverside Park is a public park located on the riverfront of downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin. It hosts events such as Riverfest, Fourth of July fireworks, Oktoberfest, Moon Tunes, and the Rotary Lights. The steamboats American Queen, La Crosse Queen, and Julia Belle Swain make stops along the river in the park. The park has walking/running trails.

The Freight House is a restaurant in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin located close to the river front and Riverside Park. The building was a freight house built by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway in 1880, with an addition in 1904. It was converted in 1978 into a restaurant. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pettibone Park is a public park on Barron Island in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The park is located across the Mississippi River from the city's downtown riverfront. Its facilities include walking trails, fishing docks, a beach, and a disc golf course. The park is named after Albert Wells Pettibone (1827–1915), a former mayor of the city of La Crosse who privately funded the creation of the park. Pettibone died before the park could formally be gifted to the city as he intended, because of a border dispute between the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota which was not fully resolved until 1919.

The La Crosse Center is a multi-purpose arena in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin, built in 1980. The arena can seat between 5,000 and 7,500, depending on the type of event. The center is also a convention center. In addition to the arena, which offers 21,600 square feet (2,010 m2) of exhibit space, two locker rooms, and three dressing rooms, there is 14,935-square-foot (1,388 m2) North Hall, which can open up to the arena to be used in combination; and a 38,740-square-foot (3,599 m2) South Exhibit Hall. All three venues total 75,275 square feet (6,993 m2) of exhibit space. The complex also contains 9,432 square feet (876 m2) of space in five meeting rooms, which can be divided into nine meeting rooms. While both exhibit halls and the arena are used for trade shows, conventions, meetings and banquets, the arena is also used for sporting events, concerts, circuses, ice shows, and other events.In addition, the center is home to countless exhibits and shows. One noteworthy event is the annual Bi-State Classic high school wrestling tournament. The center holds ten full-size wrestling mats and up to 55 wrestling squads. The most recent change to the La Crosse Center was a fifty-foot skywalk spanning over Second Street in downtown La Crosse. The skywalk links a five floor parking ramp with the east end of the convention center. The La Crosse Center is situated less than 300 feet (91.44 meters) from the banks of the Mississippi River, and Riverside Park in Downtown La Crosse.

The La Crosse Commercial Historic District is located in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin. It includes over ninety contributing structures, mostly 2-3 story commercial brick buildings constructed from the 1860s to the 1940s. The district is roughly bounded by Jay Street, Second Street South, State Street, and Fifth Avenue South.Some of the notable contributing properties include the 1866 Voegle grocery and saloon, the 1870 Italianate Solberg grocery store, the 1894 Romanesque/Queen Anne Rehfuss dry goods building, the 1903 Chicago school Doerflinger department store, the 1920 Neoclassical Rivoli building and theatre, and the 1940 Moderne Hoeschler Exchange building.The district currently contains numerous bars and restaurants. Downtown La Crosse once had the Guinness Book record with the most bars/nightclubs located on one street, which was Third Street. The area also includes other shops, offices, and residential spaces. The NRHP listed Freight House is located two blocks north of the historic district.

The Mississippi River Bridge is a combination of two individual bridges which are also known as the Cass Street Bridge and the Cameron Avenue Bridge, as well as the Big Blue Bridges. They connect downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin to Barron Island, crossing the east channel of the Mississippi River. Another bridge, the La Crosse West Channel Bridge connects Barron Island to La Crescent, Minnesota. The Mississippi River Bridge carries U.S. Routes 14 and 61 with WI 16. There is another bridge about four miles upstream, the I-90 Mississippi River Bridge that connects North La Crosse, French Island, and Dresbach, Minnesota. The Cass Street Bridge opened Sept. 23, 1939; replacing the previous Vernon Street swing bridge which was heavily damaged following an automobile accident in 1935. The original concrete deck was replaced by a metal deck in 1983; the deck was rehabilitated when the parallel Cameron Avenue Bridge opened in 2005.

The Gideon C. Hixon House is a historic residence built in 1859 and located in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The house was built for Gideon Hixon, a partner in a lumber business. Hixon would later become a founder and president of the La Cross National Bank and would serve in the state legislature. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman is the mother church of the Diocese of La Crosse. The cathedral, designed by architect Edward J. Schulte, was completed in 1962. Built of limestone, it has a tall clock tower which rises above the surrounding buildings in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin.In 2008, the cathedral undertook a six-week project to repair the steeple. In March 2021, the cathedral began another program to repair the steeple which began to drop stones in summer 2020. The Mons Anderson House is a historic house located at 410 Cass Street in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

French Island Generating Plant is a waste fired electrical power station located on French Island in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Unit 1 and 2 are boiler / steam turbine units originally constructed in the 1940s operating on coal. They were converted to burn oil in the early 1970s. When oil became too costly, alternative fuels were used. Unit 2 was converted to burn waste wood in an Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustion Boiler in the early 1980s with unit 1 following in 1987.
