The Hoffman tunnel, or Hoffman drainage tunnel, was constructed to drain water from coal mines northwest of Clarysville in Allegany County, Maryland. The two-mile-long tunnel drains into the Braddock Run tributary of Wills Creek.

God's Ark of Safety is a non-denominational Christian ministry in Frostburg, Maryland, United States, led by Pastor Everett Spence. On Easter, 1976, former Pastor Richard Greene began building a replica of Noah's Ark atop a prominent hillside along what is now Interstate 68 featuring a sign that announces to passing travelers: "Noah's Ark Being Rebuilt Here!" Ground was broken for the ark in September 1976 with over 3,000 tons of concrete. The foundation and earthwork were built to biblical proportions, around 450 by 75 by 45 feet, which is about one and a half football fields long.As of 2022, the structure is still just a frame. The Ark is featured on the front cover and chapter 4 of Timothy Beal's book Roadside Religion: In Search of the Sacred, the Strange, and the Substance of Faith. In the book Scrambled Eggs at Midnight by Frostburg writer Brad Barkley, there is a reference to the Ark in the pre-chapter section listing places that one should see when traveling across the country. It is also mentioned in Barkley's story "The Way It's Lasted."

As of the 2010 census it had a population of 73.It is located along U.S. Route 40 Alternate at its intersection with Maryland Route 55. Frostburg is 2 miles (3 km) to the west, and Cumberland is 7 miles (11 km) to the east along Route 40 Alt. Clarysville was known around the region for the Clarysville Inn, a historic building which stood from 1807 until it burned in 1999. During the American Civil War, the inn served as a military hospital, treating wounded soldiers.The exit of the Hoffman drainage tunnel, constructed to drain several coal mines, is near Clarysville.

Shaft is a census-designated place (CDP) corresponding to the unincorporated community of Borden Shaft in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 235. It is located south of Frostburg, in the Georges Creek Valley. It lies at an elevation of 1,795 feet (547 m). Borden, or Borden Shaft, was the site of a major deep mine in the valley. The principal owners of the mines were the Borden family of Massachusetts. Deep mines were unusual in the area, as most were drift mines in the Big Vein region. In 1907, the mine operator was H. and W. Hitchens Coal company. The C&P railroad delivered the windlass for the mine, then used its railroad crane to set it in place.

Eckhart Mines is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 932.Eckhart Mines lies at the southwestern base of Federal Hill, 1.8 miles (2.9 km) east of Frostburg and 0.8 miles (1.3 km) northwest of Clarysville. Braddock Run begins near Eckhart Mines. The town was founded as a company town for the nearby Eckhart Mines. According to the Maryland Mining Heritage Guide, it was "the first coal company town in Maryland."The original owner was George Eckhardt, an immigrant from Germany. The outcrop of the Pittsburgh coal seam here is known locally as "the big vein" or the "14 foot coal". The Eckhart Mines' location here was the first bituminous coal mine developed in the Georges Creek Valley coalfield, because this is where the National Road (now U.S. Route 40 Alternate) crossed the coal outcrop. The Eckhart operation was known as the Maryland Mining Company, which eventually combined with other companies to form the Consolidation Coal Company (now Consol Energy). The Eckhart operation was the first commercial coal company in the United States.

Dans Mountain is located in Allegany County, Maryland, USA between Georges Creek and the North Branch Potomac River. The highest point on Dans Mountain is called Dan's Rock which has an elevation of 2,895 feet (882 m). The mountain rises 2,200 feet (670 m) above the town of LaVale and the summit is the highest point in Allegany County. Although there are higher points in Maryland, Dans Mountain has the most impressive escarpment of Maryland's mountains. It is essentially continuous with the longer escarpment that continues both north (into Pennsylvania) and south (into West Virginia) known as the Allegheny Front.Dans Mountain State Park is located along a 16-mile (26 km) stretch of the mountain, 9 miles (14 km) south of Frostburg, Maryland. Dan's Rock Overlook is the highest scenic overlook in the park. The park also features a pond that is stocked annually, an Olympic-sized pool with a modern bathhouse, and concession stands. Dans Mountain is named for Daniel Cresap, the son of Thomas Cresap and one of the first settlers in Allegany County. Cresap was known for being adventurous, often hunting with a Delaware Indian named Nemacolin. While pursuing a bear in a tree, Daniel fell and lay unconscious until Nemacolin found him, and dragged Daniel home to safety. Since that event, the mountain has been known as Dans Mountain. Dan's Mountain Wildlife Management Area protects the mountain in an area covering 9,504 acres.

Hocking House is a historic home in Frostburg, Allegany County, Maryland, United States. It is a 2+1⁄2-story, three-bay, hip-roofed dwelling, built about 1855 in the transitional Greek Revival-Italianate architecture style. The land on which the home stands was part of the estate of Robert Clarke, Sr., one of the original settlers of the area that is now Frostburg. It was converted into a clubhouse in 1942.Hocking House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Frostburg State University (FSU) is a public university in Frostburg, Maryland. The university is the only four-year institution of the University System of Maryland west of the Baltimore-Washington passageway in the state's Appalachian highlands. Founded in 1898 by Maryland State Senator, John Leake, Frostburg was selected because the site offered the best suitable location without a cost to the state. Today, the institution is a largely residential university. With an enrollment of approximately 4,858 students, the university offers 47 undergraduate majors, 16 graduate programs, and a doctorate in educational leadership. The university is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and places primary emphasis on its role as a teaching and learning institution.

Frostburg is a city in Allegany County, Maryland. It is located at the head of the Georges Creek Valley, 8 miles (13 km) west of Cumberland. The town is one of the first cities on the "National Road", US 40, and the western terminus of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. It is part of the Cumberland MD-WV metropolitan statistical area, Frostburg was originally called Mount Pleasant until 1820, when the government developed a postal service, and the town was renamed Frostburg. Since 1973, the city has been served by what is now Interstate 68.The City of Frostburg has an approximate year-round population of 8,075. The total population was 9,002 at the 2010 census. In addition, 5,400 students attend Frostburg State University, a public university within the University System of Maryland.
