Clarysville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 73.It is located along U.S. Route 40 Alternate at its intersection with Maryland Route 55. Frostburg is 2 miles (3 km) to the west, and Cumberland is 7 miles (11 km) to the east along Route 40 Alt. Clarysville was known around the region for the Clarysville Inn, a historic building which stood from 1807 until it burned in 1999. During the American Civil War, the inn served as a military hospital, treating wounded soldiers.The exit of the Hoffman drainage tunnel, constructed to drain several coal mines, is near Clarysville.

Eckhart Mines is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 932.Eckhart Mines lies at the southwestern base of Federal Hill, 1.8 miles (2.9 km) east of Frostburg and 0.8 miles (1.3 km) northwest of Clarysville. Braddock Run begins near Eckhart Mines. The town was founded as a company town for the nearby Eckhart Mines. According to the Maryland Mining Heritage Guide, it was "the first coal company town in Maryland."The original owner was George Eckhardt, an immigrant from Germany. The outcrop of the Pittsburgh coal seam here is known locally as "the big vein" or the "14 foot coal". The Eckhart Mines' location here was the first bituminous coal mine developed in the Georges Creek Valley coalfield, because this is where the National Road (now U.S. Route 40 Alternate) crossed the coal outcrop. The Eckhart operation was known as the Maryland Mining Company, which eventually combined with other companies to form the Consolidation Coal Company (now Consol Energy). The Eckhart operation was the first commercial coal company in the United States.

Vale Summit is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 139.Local lore indicates that the community was so named in the mid 19th century, founded by the local population of coal miners. Previously, however, it was locally known as "Pompey Smash", the origin of which is commonly believed to have come from a slave named Pompey crashing his wagonload of coal. A main road through the village still bears the name "Pompey Smash Road". A paved road reached the town circa 1921, from Clarysville, along Route 40.

Grahamtown is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States, located at the southeast edge of Frostburg. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 364. It is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Hocking House is a historic home in Frostburg, Allegany County, Maryland, United States. It is a 2+1⁄2-story, three-bay, hip-roofed dwelling, built about 1855 in the transitional Greek Revival-Italianate architecture style. The land on which the home stands was part of the estate of Robert Clarke, Sr., one of the original settlers of the area that is now Frostburg. It was converted into a clubhouse in 1942.Hocking House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

As of the 2010 census it had a population of 362.Zihlman is located along Maryland Route 36, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northeast of and 500 feet (150 m) lower in elevation than Frostburg. Mount Savage is 3 miles (5 km) further northeast along MD 36.

God's Ark of Safety is a non-denominational Christian ministry in Frostburg, Maryland, United States, led by Pastor Everett Spence. On Easter, 1976, former Pastor Richard Greene began building a replica of Noah's Ark atop a prominent hillside along what is now Interstate 68 featuring a sign that announces to passing travelers: "Noah's Ark Being Rebuilt Here!" Ground was broken for the ark in September 1976 with over 3,000 tons of concrete. The foundation and earthwork were built to biblical proportions, around 450 by 75 by 45 feet, which is about one and a half football fields long.As of 2022, the structure is still just a frame. The Ark is featured on the front cover and chapter 4 of Timothy Beal's book Roadside Religion: In Search of the Sacred, the Strange, and the Substance of Faith. In the book Scrambled Eggs at Midnight by Frostburg writer Brad Barkley, there is a reference to the Ark in the pre-chapter section listing places that one should see when traveling across the country. It is also mentioned in Barkley's story "The Way It's Lasted."

The town is one of the first cities on the "National Road", US 40, and the western terminus of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. It is part of the Cumberland MD-WV metropolitan statistical area, Frostburg was originally called Mount Pleasant until 1820, when the government developed a postal service, and the town was renamed Frostburg. Since 1973, the city has been served by what is now Interstate 68.The City of Frostburg has an approximate year-round population of 8,075. The total population was 9,002 at the 2010 census. In addition, 5,400 students attend Frostburg State University, a public university within the University System of Maryland.

The Frostburg Historic District is a national historic district in Frostburg, Allegany County, Maryland. It comprises 356 resources within the city of Frostburg, along U.S. Route 40, which forms the main axis of the district. Included are a collection of early-20th century commercial buildings, primarily of brick construction, two or three stories tall, and a collection of mid- to late-19th and early-20th century homes reflecting a variety of architectural styles, including Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Borden Mines Superintendent's House was built in 1850 in Frostburg, Allegany County, Maryland. The Italianate style villa was built for Albert C. Green, first superintendent of the Borden Mining Company, one of the oldest mining companies in the United States. The frame house, with its three-story tower was one of the first of this style to appear in Allegany County.

La Vale Tollgate House is a historic toll house in La Vale, Allegany County, Maryland, United States. It is a two-story brick structure built in 1835–1836, with seven sides—a basic polygon plan. A one-story Tuscan-columned porch extends around the five outer sides of the polygonal portion. On top is a non-functional reconstructed cupola. The building served as a toll house on the Cumberland or National Road and was the first such structure to be erected.La Vale Tollgate House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Frostburg State University (FSU) is a public university in Frostburg, Maryland. The university is the only four-year institution of the University System of Maryland west of the Baltimore-Washington passageway in the state's Appalachian highlands. Founded in 1898 by Maryland State Senator, John Leake, Frostburg was selected because the site offered the best suitable location without a cost to the state. Today, the institution is a largely residential university. With an enrollment of approximately 4,858 students, the university offers 47 undergraduate majors, 16 graduate programs, and a doctorate in educational leadership. The university is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and places primary emphasis on its role as a teaching and learning institution.
