Zrinski Park

Čakovec Castle or Zrinski Castle (Croatian: Čakovečka utvrda or Stari grad Zrinskih or Hungarian: Csáktornyai vár or Zrínyi-kastély) is a medieval fortification in the middle of the town of Čakovec, the administrative seat of Međimurje County, northern Croatia. The castle is located in the Zrinski Park, not far from the city's central square, and is the biggest fortification in Međimurje County. It was constructed of hewn stone and red brick, and, during its more than 7-century-long history, subjected to several reconstructions. Today it is partly restored. The castle's main palace houses the Međimurje County Museum, the biggest museum in the county, and its atrium is also used as an outdoor theatre during the summer months. The place was the scene of the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy, a significant event in the history of Croatia. On 19 November 2007 Čakovec Castle was classified as a protected cultural good in the Register of Cultural Goods of Croatia under No. N-23.

Čakovec (Croatian pronunciation: [tʃâkoʋets]; Hungarian: Csáktornya; Latin: Aquama; German: Tschakathurn) is a city in Northern Croatia, located around 90 kilometres (56 miles) north of Zagreb, the Croatian capital. Čakovec is both the county seat and the largest city of Međimurje County, the northernmost, smallest and most densely populated Croatian county.

Škola Animiranog Filma (ŠAF) is a school of animation located in Čakovec, Croatia. The program's intent is not career development, but to promote cognition, imagination, perseverance, cooperation and pride in one's work for children between the ages of 8 and 12 years old. Edo Lukman has been the head of the school since its founding on February 28, 1975. Since then, over a hundred animated short films have been created by more than 500 children enrolled in the program. ŠAF is an active participant and organizer of many animated film festivals and workshops.

The 1918 occupation of Međimurje was takeover of the region of Međimurje by the forces deployed by the National Council of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs in November and December 1918 in immediate aftermath of the World War I. The territory, predominantly inhabited by the Croats was a part of the Kingdom of Hungary until the troops under command of Colonel Slavko Kvaternik captured and added it to the just established Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The campaign to capture Međimurje began in November 1918 ostensibly in response to Hungarian authorities action to put down a revolt of population of Međimurje. The first intervention was quickly organised by Major Ivan Tomašević leading a force of about three hundred which was routed by Hungarian forces near Čakovec – the region's largest town. Pleas for military help directed to the Royal Serbian Army and the French Armée d'Orient were rebuffed due to obligations assumed under the Armistice of Belgrade between the Entente Powers and Hungary which defined the Drava River in as the line of Hungarian control in the area. A new effort was mounted by the National Council on 24 December using a 3,000-strong force comprising a significant part of the Royal Croatian Home Guard and volunteers. The second incursion into Međimurje was planned in greater detail by Major Dragutin Perko, who went on to command a large part of the forces advancing into Međimurje. Međimurje was captured on 24 December without resistance from the Hungarian garrison. Perko was appointed its administrator, and the region was declared a part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The proclamation was made with a reference to the principle of self-determination. Addition of Međimurje to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was confirmed by the Paris Peace Conference.

Stadion SRC Mladost is a multi-purpose stadium in Čakovec, Croatia. The approximate capacity of the stadium is 8,000 places, including around 5,000 seats. The stadium is owned by the city of Čakovec and primarily used for football matches and various athletics events. The football clubs currently using the stadium as their home ground are NK Čakovec and NK Međimurje. Occasionally, it is also used to stage concerts and similar events. The stadium was built in the mid-1980s for the purposes of the 1987 Summer Universiade. It is located in the Mladost Centre for Sports and Recreation (SRC Mladost), in the northwestern suburban part of the city of Čakovec. The complex also includes several other sports fields, a sports hall and a bathing resort. Originally, the stadium only had around 1,500 seats, all under the roof in the upper tier of the main stand. However, following the first promotion of NK Međimurje to the Croatian First League in 2004, the seating capacity of the stadium was expanded from 1,500 to 5,000 seats. In April and May 2009, the stadium was also equipped with floodlighting and a digital scoreboard. The main auxiliary pitch of the stadium is also floodlit. The first floodlit competitive match in the stadium was played on 25 July 2009 between NK Međimurje and NK Karlovac in the Croatian First League, ending in a 1-1 draw.

Šenkovec is a naselje (settlement) in the municipality of Brdovec, Zagreb County, Croatia. According to the 2001 census, it has 733 inhabitants living in an area of 0.90 square kilometers (0.35 sq mi).

Strahoninec (Hungarian: Drávanagyfalu) is a municipality in Međimurje County, Croatia. Strahoninec is the only village in the municipality. Also part of the municipality is the hamlet of Poleve, located just over a kilometre south of the village. In the 2011 census, the municipality had a population of 2,682. Of the entire population, a total of 2,645 people (98.6%) identified themselves as Croats.The village of Strahoninec is located next to the southern limits of Čakovec, the county seat of Međimurje County, around 3 kilometres from the centre of the city. The north-eastern part of the village is connected with Savska Ves, while its western part is close to Nedelišće.

Šenkovec (Hungarian: Szentilona) is a municipality in Međimurje County, Croatia, located just outside the county seat, Čakovec. The municipality includes two villages – Šenkovec and Knezovec. In the 2011 census, the two villages were populated by a total of 2,879 people, most of whom are Croats. The seat of the municipality is in Šenkovec, a suburban village located approximately 2 kilometers to the north-west from the centre of Čakovec. The main road between Čakovec and Mursko Središće goes through the village. The village of Šenkovec has its own elementary school and kindergarten, as well as a sports hall and library. The pulmonology department of the Čakovec County Hospital is located in the Ksajpa neighbourhood of Šenkovec. There are two chapels in the municipality – the Holy Trinity Chapel in Šenkovec and the Saint Florian Chapel in Knezovec. The old Saint Jelena Chapel in Šenkovec is a listed building.

Feštetić Castle (Croatian: Dvorac Feštetić or Kaštel Feštetić) is a castle in Pribislavec, a village next to the town of Čakovec, northern Croatia. It was built most probably in the 16th century and owned by the members of the Zrinski family (count Adam Zrinski) almost till the end of the 17th century. The name of the castle comes from the Croatian-Hungarian Feštetić family, who possessed it from 1791 until 1923. Before its reconstruction in 1870, ordered by count György Festetics, the castle was surrounded by a park and a lovely garden with a chapel in it. The reconstruction gave it the neogothic look, especially marked by a tower (steeple) on the southeastern side, bay windows, garlands and door and window jambs. Although having been devastated and ablazed for several times during the wars in the past centuries, this building structure, considered by many as the most beautiful and most romantic castle in Međimurje County, was always renewed. It now functions as a local primary school.

Nedelišće (Hungarian: Drávavásárhely; Kajkavian: Nedelišče) is a village in Međimurje County, in northern Croatia, and the seat of the Municipality of Nedelišće, which also includes 10 other villages in the south-western part of Međimurje County. Nedelišće itself is a suburban village located just outside the county seat, Čakovec, around 3 kilometres from the city's centre. Despite not being designated as either a city or a town, Nedelišće was the third most populated settlement in Međimurje County, after Čakovec and Prelog, with 4,320 inhabitants according to the 2011 census.

Sveti Juraj na Bregu (Hungarian: Víziszentgyörgy, German: St. Georg im Gebirge) is a municipality in Međimurje County, Croatia. The municipality consists of 9 villages: Brezje, Dragoslavec, Frkanovec, Lopatinec, Mali Mihaljevec, Okrugli Vrh, Pleškovec, Vučetinec and Zasadbreg. The municipality covers an area of 30,17 km², while its population in the 2011 census was 5,090. The majority of the population are Croats. The official seat of the municipality is Lopatinec, with the church of St. George which is visible from a huge distance, village also includes the municipality's elementary school and the main church of the local parish. In the 19th century, the present villages of Dragoslavec, Frkanovec, Lopatinec, Okrugli Vrh, Pleškovec and Vučetinec were considered a single village under the present name of the municipality - Sveti Juraj na Bregu. The municipality was named after Saint George, who is also depicted on its coat of arms. Its name means Saint George on the Hill in the local dialect. The main road going through the municipality connects Čakovec, the county seat of Međimurje County, with Štrigova and the Croatian-Slovenian border checkpoint in Razkrižje. The main church of the local parish sits atop of a hill and is one of the most prominent churches in the region, as it is also visible from the D3 state road while driving from Varaždin in the direction of Čakovec. In 2008, it was heavily damaged when its bell tower collapsed during renovations, but has since been rebuilt.
