Westley, Suffolk

RAF Westley is a former Royal Air Force satellite airfield located to the west of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England, between 1938 and 1946. It was established by the Straight Corporation which set up the West Suffolk Aero Club in May 1938, before the airfield was taken over by the RAF Volunteer Reserve.

Little Horringer Hall is a Grade II-listed house in Horringer, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England.There has been a hall in this location since the 17th century, and an earlier property was once the residence of Sir Richard Gipps. The present house was built around 1750 from red brick. A pair of bay windows and a replacement front door were added in the 20th century. It was the final residence of John Hervey, 7th Marquess of Bristol after he sold the remaining lease of the nearby Ickworth House to the National Trust owing to financial difficulties.

Thingoe was a hundred of Suffolk, consisting of 31,850 acres (128.9 km2).One of the smaller hundreds of Suffolk, around 9 miles (14 km) wide and 11 miles (18 km) long, Thingoe contained the borough of Bury St Edmunds on its eastern border, though the town was considered a separate jurisdiction. The remainder of the hundred consisted of the land to the west of Bury St Edmunds. The River Lark rises in the hundred, flowing north to the River Little Ouse. The name derives from the words thing, a Norse word meaning "assembly", and howe, again Norse, meaning detached hill or mound.

Horringer Court Caves is a 3.8-hectare (9.4-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the southern outskirts of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.This site has over 500 m (1,600 ft) of chalk mines, with five grilled entrances, which are used by bats for hibernation. They have been the subject of research since 1947. The main bats using the caves are Daubenton's, but other species include the very rare barbastelle, which have been recorded eight times in 36 years.This site in the grounds of a hotel is private property.

St Edmundsbury was a local government district and borough in Suffolk, England. It was named after its main town, Bury St Edmunds. The second town in the district was Haverhill. The population of the district was 111,008 at the 2011 Census.The district was formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 (along with the abolition of the county of West Suffolk) by the merger of the Borough of Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill Urban District, Clare Rural District and Thingoe Rural District. Until March 2009, its main offices were in Bury St Edmunds (Angel Hill and Western Way). Thereafter, a purpose-built complex named West Suffolk House housed both St Edmundsbury and Suffolk County Council staff.In 2008, the Council submitted a proposal to the Boundary Commission which would see it as central to a new West Suffolk unitary council. However, the proposal was rejected and no unitary scheme for Suffolk was adopted. (For more details see also Suffolk.) In October 2011, St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Forest Heath District Council agreed to have one chief executive, a shared management team and a combined workforce.St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath were merged on 1 April 2019 to form the new West Suffolk district.

West Suffolk District is a local government district in Suffolk, England. It was established in 2019 as a merger of the previous Forest Heath District with the Borough of St Edmundsbury. The council is based in Bury St Edmunds, the district's largest town. The district also contains the towns of Brandon, Clare, Haverhill, Mildenhall and Newmarket, along with numerous villages and surrounding rural areas. In 2021 it had a population of 180,820. The neighbouring districts are Mid Suffolk, Babergh, Braintree, South Cambridgeshire, East Cambridgeshire, King's Lynn and West Norfolk and Breckland.

Western Suffolk will be a unitary authority area in the ceremonial county of Suffolk, England. It will be formed from the West Suffolk district, 21 parishes from Mid Suffolk and Babergh less 31 parishes. There will be elections in May 2027 and the new unitary will be created in 2028. In 2021 the population of the area was 254,700. It is being formed as part of ongoing local government changes throughout England, in which all areas of the country that have separate county councils and district councils will see those replaced with single-tier, or unitary, local governance. The alternative proposal for a single unitary council was not chosen.

Horringer, formerly also called Horningsheath, is a village and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk in eastern England. It lies on the A143 about two miles south-west of Bury St Edmunds. The population in 2011 was 1055.

West Suffolk House is a municipal building in Bury St Edmunds. It houses the base for West Suffolk Council It also houses offices for Suffolk County Council.

West Suffolk College is a Further Education college in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The college delivers a range of courses, including vocational and technical courses, apprenticeships, and an array of higher-apprenticeships and bachelor's degree courses accredited by the University of East Anglia. Over 12,000 students are enrolled at West Suffolk College.

Ickworth House is a country house at Ickworth, near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, England. It is a neoclassical building set in parkland. The house was the residence of the Marquess of Bristol before being sold to the National Trust in 1998.
