West Suffolk District

Western Suffolk will be a unitary authority area in the ceremonial county of Suffolk, England. It will be formed from the West Suffolk district, 21 parishes from Mid Suffolk and Babergh less 31 parishes. There will be elections in May 2027 and the new unitary will be created in 2028. In 2021 the population of the area was 254,700. It is being formed as part of ongoing local government changes throughout England, in which all areas of the country that have separate county councils and district councils will see those replaced with single-tier, or unitary, local governance. The alternative proposal for a single unitary council was not chosen.

St Edmundsbury was a local government district and borough in Suffolk, England. It was named after its main town, Bury St Edmunds. The second town in the district was Haverhill. The population of the district was 111,008 at the 2011 Census.The district was formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 (along with the abolition of the county of West Suffolk) by the merger of the Borough of Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill Urban District, Clare Rural District and Thingoe Rural District. Until March 2009, its main offices were in Bury St Edmunds (Angel Hill and Western Way). Thereafter, a purpose-built complex named West Suffolk House housed both St Edmundsbury and Suffolk County Council staff.In 2008, the Council submitted a proposal to the Boundary Commission which would see it as central to a new West Suffolk unitary council. However, the proposal was rejected and no unitary scheme for Suffolk was adopted. (For more details see also Suffolk.) In October 2011, St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Forest Heath District Council agreed to have one chief executive, a shared management team and a combined workforce.St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath were merged on 1 April 2019 to form the new West Suffolk district.

West Suffolk House is a municipal building in Bury St Edmunds. It houses the base for West Suffolk Council It also houses offices for Suffolk County Council.

West Suffolk College is a Further Education college in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The college delivers a range of courses, including vocational and technical courses, apprenticeships, and an array of higher-apprenticeships and bachelor's degree courses accredited by the University of East Anglia. Over 12,000 students are enrolled at West Suffolk College.

King Edward VI School is a co-educational comprehensive secondary school in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England. The school in its present form was created in 1972 by the merging of King Edward VI Grammar School, with the Silver Jubilee Girls School and the Silver Jubilee Boys School (founded 1935). The school occupies the site of the former Silver Jubilee schools in Grove Road, Bury St Edmunds.

Bury St Edmunds County High School, previously Bury St Edmunds County Upper School, is a 13 to 19 co-educational comprehensive part of the Bury St Edmunds All-Through Trust, comprising County High School, Horringer Court School, Westley School and Barrow CEVC and Tollgate Primaries.It is one of three 13-18 schools serving the town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, England and its surrounding villages. Pupils enter Year 9 primarily from three catchment middle schools in Bury St Edmunds but pupils are drawn widely from across the villages and towns of West Suffolk. The school is often over-subscribed with 266 first-choice applicants in 2009/10, 287 in 2010/11, 282 for 2011/12, 279 for 2012/13 and 268 for 2014/15 against a LEA Planned Admission Number of 260.Attached to the main school is a Sixth Form, which at present stands at around 209 students spread between Years 12 and 13. The school is located on Beetons Way, on the outskirts of town, next to St Benedict's Roman Catholic Upper School, with which it used to collaborate in the sixth form. County High School has specialisms in science and languages with an Able and Talented Focus, and is also accredited as a "Consultant School" by the Specialist Schools and Academies TrustTogether with Westley School, part of the Bury St Edmunds All-Through Trust, it is the Area Hub for West Suffolk and East Cambridgeshire for the Computing at School Network of Excellence as part of the joint effort by the BCS, Chartered Institute for IT and the Computing Industry to provide leadership and strategic guidance to all those involved in Computing education in schools. The school is accredited with the National College for School Leadership as a Teaching School and is part of the West Suffolk All-Through Teaching School Alliance, to train and develop teachers from September 2013 and it is also the lead Suffolk school in the Suffolk and Norfolk Initial Teacher Training (SNITT) initiative, in partnership with Suffolk County Council and University College Suffolk, which is part of the Department for Education's School Direct Training Programme.In 2019, the school received an 'inadequate' inspection from Ofsted.In 2023 due to the reorganization of four schools in Bury St Edmunds, the name of Bury St Edmunds County Upper School was changed to Bury St Edmunds County High School

St Benedict's Catholic School is a coeducational Roman Catholic secondary school and sixth form in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England. Opened in 1967, the school has around 900 students.St Benedict's was a Mathematics and Computing Specialist School. Whilst the school is based in Bury St. Edmunds, many of its students travel from a wide area, including Haverhill, Thetford, Sudbury, Stowmarket, Newmarket and other surrounding villages and towns, because it is the only Catholic secondary school in the vicinity. Previously a voluntary aided school administered by Suffolk County Council, in September 2022 St Benedict's Catholic School converted to academy status. The school is now sponsored by the Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Trust, and continues to be under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia.

Cemetry Road was a cricket ground in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The ground was known as Field Lane from 1826 to 1854 and was later known as the West Suffolk Cricket Ground. Today, the location of the ground would be along King's Road in Bury St Edmunds, with the stretch of the A1302 named Parkway bisecting the site.

The King's Road drill hall, sometimes referred to as the Old Cavalry Barracks, is a former military installation in King's Road (formerly Cemetery Road) in Bury St Edmunds. It is a Grade II listed building.

The Market Cross, also known as Bury St Edmunds Town Hall, is a municipal building in Cornhill in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England. The building, which is currently used as a community space, is a Grade I listed building.

Bury St Edmunds railway station serves the town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, England. The station is on the Ipswich–Ely line and all trains calling there are operated by Greater Anglia.
