Pawłowice, Pszczyna County

Gmina Pawłowice is a rural gmina (administrative district) in Pszczyna County, Silesian Voivodeship, in southern Poland. Its seat is the village of Pawłowice, which lies approximately 17 kilometres (11 mi) west of Pszczyna and 38 km (24 mi) south-west of the regional capital Katowice. The gmina covers an area of 75.77 square kilometres (29.3 sq mi), and as of 2019 its total population is 18,171.

The Pniówek coal mine is a large mine in the south of Poland in Pniówek, Silesian Voivodeship, 350 km south-west of the capital, Warsaw. Pniówek represents one of the largest coal reserves in Poland, having estimated reserves of 101.3 million tonnes of coal. The annual coal production is around 5.16 million tonnes.

Up until 1945, and between 1973 and 1975, it constituted an independent rural district in the historical and geographical region of Upper Silesia. It lies approximately 7 kilometres (4 mi) south of Pawłowice, 20 km (12 mi) south-west of Pszczyna, and 44 km (27 mi) south-west of the regional capital Katowice. The village was first mentioned in a Latin document of Diocese of Wrocław called Liber fundationis episcopatus Vratislaviensis from around 1305 as item Geranczcovitz. The creation of the village was a part of a larger settlement campaign taking place in the late 13th century on the territory of what will be later known as Upper Silesia.

It is located in the north-eastern part of the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia and is the smallest town in the county.
