Eygelshoven Markt railway station

Eygelshoven station is a railway station southwest of Eygelshoven, the Netherlands. It is located on the Schaesberg–Simpelveld railway, which is part of the Heuvellandlijn (Maastricht–Kerkrade). Train services are operated by Arriva.

Eygelshoven (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɛiɣəlsɦoːvə(n)], Limburgish: Egelze [ˈeːʝəlzə], Ripuarian: Ejelze [ˈeːjəlzə]) is a village, since 1982 part of the town of Kerkrade, in the southeast of the Netherlands, close to the German and Belgian borders. It has two former coal mines, Laura and Julia, which were named after the wives of the two owners. Both pits closed in 1974. The local soccer club is also named after the former coal mines. Eygelshoven has a small former church from the sixteenth century, which stands on top of a hill. In 1922, another church was built. Architect Alphons Boosten designed the new church. Plans to demolish the old church were abandoned in favour of a new use as a chapel and because of its historical worth. A third Roman Catholic church was built in 1957, the Pastoor van Arskerk, which was torn down in 1994 when it became redundant. The old mining village of Eygelshoven was a separate municipality until 1982, when after more than eight centuries it was merged with Kerkrade.The dialect spoken in Eygelshoven is not the Ripuarian Kerkrade dialect, but a local East Limburgish variety called Egelzer plat. One of the biggest differences between the two is the pronunciation of the letter ⟨g⟩; in Eygelshoven, it is pronounced as a voiced velar fricative, as in southern Standard Dutch, whereas in Kerkrade it is pronounced as a palatal approximant (as in Colognian), except after back vowels.

Nieuwenhagen is a former village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is now a part of the municipality of Landgraaf. Nieuwenhagen was a separate municipality until 1982, when it became a part of Landgraaf.

Chevremont is a railway station in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. The station opened on 15 May 1949 on the Schaesberg–Simpelveld railway, which is part of the Heuvellandlijn (Maastricht–Kerkrade). Train services are operated by Arriva.

GaiaZOO is a Dutch zoo located in Kerkrade. It opened in 2005 as GaiaPark with approximately 80 different species. In 2014, the zoo had approximately 100 different species.

Pinkpop is an annual music festival held at Landgraaf, Netherlands. It is usually held on the Pentecost weekend (Pinksteren in Dutch, hence the name). If Pentecost falls on an early date in May, the festival is held later in June. Starting in 1970, at Burgemeester Damen Sportpark in the city of Geleen, Pinkpop is the oldest and longest running annual dedicated pop and rock music festival in the world.Pinkpop is a three-day festival, from Saturday through Monday when on Pentecost weekend, or Friday through Sunday otherwise, with a 60,000 people per day capacity, and with performances on four separate stages. From 2006 through 2011, Pinkpop sold out six years in a row. During 44 editions, more than two million people have attended Pinkpop. Some 700 music acts have played at the festival.In 1994 (the 25th edition), it was decided to sell only 60,000 tickets, to prevent overcrowding due to the popularity of the festival. In 1995, it was made into a two-day festival. Two years later this was further expanded to three days. 2007 saw a spin-off, later in the year, on 11 August, called Pinkpop Classic, for an older rock audience, with bands that had previously performed at the festival in past decades. This spin-off was held again in following years, with the exception of 2011, when the organisation was not able to book enough artists. In 2008, Pinkpop was not held on Pentecost weekend for the first time. Pentecost occurred too early that year for the convenience of fans and performers alike. This was decided following the 2005 edition, in which the Pentecost weekend also fell early and therefore Pinkpop could not convince many great performers to come play at the festival. Sales were disappointing in 2005, so by shifting the 2008 festival, the organisation hoped to solve these problems. Pinkpop 2008 turned out to have had the largest concert attendance to date. The dates for the 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2016 edition have been shifted as well, for similar reasons. The 2020 and 2021 Pinkpop festivals were not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Staatsmijn Wilhelmina was the first and the smallest of the Dutch state owned mines. It produced coal for domestic use, as its near neighbours, the Laura Mine, Oranje Nassau II, Willem-Sophia, and Domaniale Mijn. The concession of the mine was bordered by the privately owned mines mentioned above. After a few decades the mine could not be extended sideways, so the only way to keep production up was going deeper, this in contrast to the large Emma, Hendrik and Maurits mines.

Landgraaf is a railway station in Landgraaf, Netherlands, situated near the district Schaesberg. Before 1986, it was called Schaesberg. The station was opened on 1 May 1896 and is located on the Sittard–Herzogenrath railway and the Heuvellandlijn (Maastricht–Kerkrade). Services are operated by Arriva and Deutsche Bahn.

Ubach over Worms (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈybɑx oːvər ˈʋɔr(ə)ms]) is a former municipality located in the southeast of the Netherlands, in the province of Limburg. In 1982 it was incorporated into the new municipality of Landgraaf along with Schaesberg and Nieuwenhagen. The German name for this part of Landgraaf is "Waubach". It is believed the latter name derives from Waldbach, which is German for "woodland creek", referring to the local Worm stream. This name is said to have later become corrupted to Waubach. Ubach over Worms as a municipality dates back to 1795. It contained the five hamlets; Groenstraat, Rimburg, Waubach, Lauradorp and Abdissenbosch. After the French occupation the Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed and the Overworms area was separated from the German town Übach. They then chose the name Ubach over Worms, which means Ubach over Worms River, as seen from the German Übach.

Rodahal is a 4,500-capacity event and concert venue located in Kerkrade, Netherlands. It opened in 1966 and was designed by Dutch architect Laurens Bisscheroux. Rodahal has hosted concerts by many famous bands and artists over the years, including Alice Cooper, Status Quo, Fats Domino, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Dire Straits, Santana, Iron Maiden and Bob Dylan.

The Continium or in full Discovery Center Continium (sic) is a provincial science and industry based museum in Kerkrade, Limburg province in the Netherlands. It was formerly named Industrion. The museum is an Anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

The Oranje Nassau II was a Dutch coal mine located in Schaesberg. The mine was in operation from 1904 until 1971. It was the second of four mines collectively known as the Oranje Nassau Mijnen. When in 1904 the first coal from the ground, high production levels were not yet achieved. The mine was not connected to the railroad and the won coal had to be hauled to the Schaesberg station by horse and carriage. In 1906 the mine was in full production as the railways to Heerlen were finished. This railway was also used by the Staatsmijn Wilhelmina. Until its closure, a total of 34,065,000 tons of coal were brought to the surface. The highest production was reached in 1930 with 687,000 tonnes. In the last year that the mine was still in production (1970) 506,000 tonnes were won.
