Inner Belt District

The Meigs Elevated Railway was an experimental but unsuccessful 19th century elevated steam-powered urban rapid transit system, often described as a monorail but technically pre-electric third rail. It was invented in the US by Josiah Vincent Meigs (also known as Joe Meigs or Joe Vincent Meigs), of Lowell, Massachusetts, and was demonstrated in a suburb of Boston called East Cambridge from 1886 to 1894.

The Winter Street Historic District is a historic district on Winter Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Centered on the junction of Winter Street with Sciarappa Street, the district includes sixteen houses, fourteen of which were worker's cottages built before 1854. Many early residents of the area were employed by the New England Glass Company, whose factory was nearby. The district is the best-preserved streetscape of such worker housing in East Cambridge.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The House at 14 Chestnut Street in Somerville, Massachusetts, was one of the last residential structures in the Brickbottom area of the city. Built about 1860, it was a two-story wood-frame structure with Italianate style, with bracketed eaves and an elaborately decorated front door hood. The area where it stood was once lined with similar modestly scaled worker housing, most of which was demolished to turn the area into an industrial park.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, and demolished sometime thereafter.

Brickbottom is an industrial district located in southeast Somerville, Massachusetts, USA. Along with the nearby Inner Belt District, Brickbottom is a historically industrial zone of Somerville, with factories, warehouses, distribution centers, railroad connections, regional maintenance facilities, MBTA/Amtrak offices, retail stores and a hotel. An elevated railroad right-of-way separates the Brickbottom area from the Inner Belt District located to the east. The two areas resemble each other in terms of use. However, Brickbottom has older dense development in a grid pattern and has a couple of small neighborhoods. Somerville is currently engaged in an ongoing community process, begun in 2011, to determine a long-term Master Plan for the Inner Belt and Brickbottom region. A draft of the plan should be available for public comment by the end of 2013.

The MBTA Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility (signed as, and often known by, its former name of Boston Engine Terminal) is the primary train maintenance repair facility for the MBTA Commuter Rail system. It is located in the Inner Belt area of Somerville, Massachusetts, near North Station in Boston. The present Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility was built in 1995, replacing the Boston Engine Terminal which was built by the former Boston and Maine Railroad. Three small platforms on asphalt crossings serve as flag stops for MBTA employees only. One platform serves the Fitchburg Line, another the Lowell Line, and a third the Haverhill Line and Newburyport/Rockport Line (which split a mile north of the CRMF). It was considered as a possible location for a light rail maintenance facility for the under-construction Green Line Extension. The Green Line facility was ultimately built on an industrial site just west of the Commuter Rail facility.

The Lechmere Point Corporation Houses is a historic apartment rowhouse at 45–51 Gore St. and 25 3rd Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Built sometime before 1821, this 2+1⁄2-story brick-and-wood structure is the only surviving building to be built by the Lechmere Point Corporation, which developed East Cambridge in the early decades of the 19th century. The house was owned for a time by lawyer and politician Christopher Gore, a principal of the corporation who also speculated in area real estate. Two of the buildings (25 3rd Street and 45 Gore Street) have retained their original gable roofs, while 49 Gore Street has been raised to a full three stories and given arched windows, and 51 Gore Street has had a mansard roof added.The houses were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

East Cambridge Savings Bank is a mutual savings bank in Massachusetts. Its branches serve communities north and west of Boston, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1854. The bank's Art Deco headquarters building at 292 Cambridge Street in East Cambridge, Massachusetts was built in 1931 to a design by T. M. James. It has a triple-arched front facade, an element repeated on the side with three similarly-scaled round-arch windows. Bands of carving adorn an entablature band at the top of the main wall, and on a stepped back section above. The building's interior includes sculpture by Paul Fjelde and murals painted by Alfred Rasmussen. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Gustavus G. Prescott House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. It is a rare five-bay center-entry Greek Revival house to survive in East Somerville. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built in the 1840s, along with a matching building at 69–71, which has lost historical integrity. The owner, Gustavus Prescott, was a Charlestown merchant who is said to have operated an inn on the premises.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

St. Hedwig Parish is designated for Polish immigrants in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. Founded in 1907, it was one of the Polish-American Roman Catholic parishes in New England in the Archdiocese of Boston. The last pastor of the parish, from 1964, was Monsignor Francis Chmaj. The parish closed on June 15, 1995, though the closing mass was on April 23, 1995. After World War II, the parish was a place that brought together the Polish Armed Forces officers settled in the Boston area.

East Somerville station is an under-construction light rail station on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Green Line located in southeastern Somerville, Massachusetts. The accessible station has a single island platform serving the two tracks of the Medford Branch, which parallels the Lowell Line. It is planned to open in mid-2022 as part of the Green Line Extension (GLX) and will be served by the E branch. The Boston and Lowell Railroad (B&L) opened a station at Milk Row in 1835; it was replaced with Prospect Hill station in the 1880s. The station was served by the Boston and Maine Railroad, successor to the B&L, until 1927. Extensions to the Green Line were proposed throughout the 20th century, most with Washington Street as one of the intermediate stations. A separate station in the Brickbottom neighborhood was rejected in 2008, though the planned station at Washington Street was renamed Brickbottom by 2011. The MBTA agreed in 2012 to open the station by 2017, and a construction contract was awarded in 2013. Cost increases triggered a wholesale reevaluation of the GLX project in 2015. A scaled-down station design was released in 2016, with the station renamed to East Somerville later than year. A design and construction contract was issued in 2017. Construction of East Somerville station began in early 2020 and was largely completed by late 2021.

The East Cambridge Historic District encompasses the historic center of East Cambridge, Massachusetts. It includes the major buildings that were built to house county services for Middlesex County beginning in the 1810s, and a cluster of largely vernacular Greek Revival worker housing located west of the county complex on Otis, Thorndike, Spring, and Sciarappa Streets. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Samuel Ireland House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. It is a 1+1⁄2-story vernacular cottage, five bays wide, with a side gable roof pierced by two dormers, and a projecting gable-roofed vestibule at the center of its front facade. The house was built c. 1792 by Samuel Ireland, a farmer. It is the oldest documented house in eastern Somerville, and one of the oldest in the city.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
