Brickbottom (Somerville, Massachusetts)

The House at 14 Chestnut Street in Somerville, Massachusetts, was one of the last residential structures in the Brickbottom area of the city. Built about 1860, it was a two-story wood-frame structure with Italianate style, with bracketed eaves and an elaborately decorated front door hood. The area where it stood was once lined with similar modestly scaled worker housing, most of which was demolished to turn the area into an industrial park.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, and demolished sometime thereafter.

East Somerville station is an under-construction light rail station on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Green Line located in southeastern Somerville, Massachusetts. The accessible station has a single island platform serving the two tracks of the Medford Branch, which parallels the Lowell Line. It is planned to open in mid-2022 as part of the Green Line Extension (GLX) and will be served by the E branch. The Boston and Lowell Railroad (B&L) opened a station at Milk Row in 1835; it was replaced with Prospect Hill station in the 1880s. The station was served by the Boston and Maine Railroad, successor to the B&L, until 1927. Extensions to the Green Line were proposed throughout the 20th century, most with Washington Street as one of the intermediate stations. A separate station in the Brickbottom neighborhood was rejected in 2008, though the planned station at Washington Street was renamed Brickbottom by 2011. The MBTA agreed in 2012 to open the station by 2017, and a construction contract was awarded in 2013. Cost increases triggered a wholesale reevaluation of the GLX project in 2015. A scaled-down station design was released in 2016, with the station renamed to East Somerville later than year. A design and construction contract was issued in 2017. Construction of East Somerville station began in early 2020 and was largely completed by late 2021.

The Samuel Ireland House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. It is a 1+1⁄2-story vernacular cottage, five bays wide, with a side gable roof pierced by two dormers, and a projecting gable-roofed vestibule at the center of its front facade. The house was built c. 1792 by Samuel Ireland, a farmer. It is the oldest documented house in eastern Somerville, and one of the oldest in the city.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Camp Prospect Hill was a former American Civil War training camp that existed in 1861 in Somerville, Massachusetts. It was located on Prospect Hill in the Union Square neighborhood of Somerville, on the site of an American Revolutionary War fort. Company E of the 39th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment trained there.

The Inner Belt District is a 126-acre (0.51 km2) industrial district located in the southeastern portion of Somerville, Massachusetts. Along with nearby Brickbottom, the Inner Belt is a historically industrial zone of Somerville, with factories, warehouses, distribution centers, railroad connections, regional maintenance facilities, MBTA and Amtrak offices, retail stores and a hotel. Named after the proposed but doomed Inner Belt Highway, the district is bounded by Interstate 93, Route 28, and the Lowell and Fitchburg rail lines. Inner Belt Road runs through the center of the Inner Belt District intersecting with 3rd Avenue to connect to the MBTA maintenance facility. Although adjacent to the McGrath Corridor, NorthPoint in Cambridge and Sullivan Square in Charlestown, it is isolated from them by highways and rail lines.An elevated railroad right-of-way separates the Brickbottom area located to the west of the Inner Belt District. The two areas resemble each other in terms of use. However, Brickbottom has older dense development in a grid pattern and has a couple of small neighborhoods. Somerville is currently engaged in an ongoing community process, begun in 2011, to determine a long-term Master Plan for the Inner Belt and Brickbottom region. A draft of the plan should be available for public comment by the end of 2013.

The Union Railway Car Barn is an historic building in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is a large brick 2+1⁄2-story building, with a distinctive round-arch central window and a stepped brick cornice. Its ground floor has been converted to a retail storefront. It was built in 1869 to house the horse-drawn streetcars of the Union Railway Company, founded in 1855. It is the only surviving car barn of three built by the company in Cambridge, and a rare surviving element of the city's 19th-century transportation infrastructure.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The house at 5 Prospect Hill in Somerville, Massachusetts is rare in the city as a Queen Anne house executed in brick. Built c. 1880, it is a 2+1⁄2-story house with a side-gable roof and a projecting gable section on the left front. A polygonal bay projects further from this gable section, with windows set in segmented-arch openings with a band of polychrome brickwork between. A two-story porch extends from the side of the projecting section across the remainder of the front. Other details of the exterior include bargeboard accents in the gables, and terra cotta insets in the brickwork.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Winter Street Historic District is a historic district on Winter Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Centered on the junction of Winter Street with Sciarappa Street, the district includes sixteen houses, fourteen of which were worker's cottages built before 1854. Many early residents of the area were employed by the New England Glass Company, whose factory was nearby. The district is the best-preserved streetscape of such worker housing in East Cambridge.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The house at 81 Pearl Street in Somerville, Massachusetts is a well-preserved Italianate house. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built c. 1860, and features a deep front gable with paired decorative brackets, and a front porch supported by square columns, with an unusual scalloped-arch cornice trim. It is among the best-preserved of the period worker housing built in East Somerville at that time. An early occupant was Benjamin Gage, a machinist.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Charles Williams House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story wood frame Italianate house was built c. 1848 for Charles Williams, a hat dealer. The central projecting section has a Palladian window on the second floor, above a recessed entranceway where the door is surrounded by sidelight and transom windows. It is one of a small number of surviving Italianate homes in the city, and is one of the oldest of that style.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Sacred Heart Church, Rectory, School and Convent make up a historic Roman Catholic church complex in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The church was built in the 1870s and 1880s to serve the parish first organized as the St. John the Evangelist Parish in 1842. The cornerstone of the church was laid on 4 October 1874. It was dedicated in 1883, and opened for Divine Service on 12 November 1876. The rectory was added in 1885, and the convent and school followed in 1902. The church is a Medieval Gothic structure designed by P. W. Ford. The complex occupies an entire city block, and has been partly taken over for Cambridge city school administration. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 13 April 1982; #387395.
