Lickey Hills

Lickey Hills Country Park is a country park in England. It is 10 miles (16 kilometres) south west of Birmingham and 24 miles (39 kilometres) north east of Worcester. The 524 acres (212 ha) park is situated just south of Rednal and close to Barnt Green. It is half a mile west of Cofton Hackett. It is one of the oldest parks managed by Birmingham City Council. The hills rise to 298 m (977 ft) above sea level at Beacon Hill. The park exists in its current form only through the activities and generosity of the early 20th-century philanthropic Birmingham Society for the Preservation of Open Spaces who purchased Rednal Hill and later arranged for Pinfield Wood and Bilberry Hill to be permanently leased on a nominal peppercorn rent. The society included such prominent and public spirited luminaries as T Grosvenor Lee, Ivor Windsor-Clive, 2nd Earl of Plymouth and several elders of the Cadbury family led by George Cadbury and his wife Dame Elizabeth Cadbury. The society gave the original park to the people of Birmingham in 1888, with further tracts being added progressively until 1933. The park has thus been preserved as a free-entry public open space. The Lickey Hills immediately became popular as a recreation area and attendance numbers exploded between 1924 and 1953 while the tram service connected with the terminus at Rednal. As early as 1919 as many as 20,000 visitors were recorded on a single August Bank Holiday Monday. The current Country Park status was established with the support of the Countryside Commission in 1971 and today the park still hosts over 500,000 visitors a year. It is considered to be one of the most picturesque public spaces of its type in the West Midlands and is Green Flag recognised.

Bilberry Hill is one of the Lickey Hills in northern Worcestershire, England, 10.3 miles (16.5 kilometres) south west of Birmingham and 24 miles (38.5 kilometres) north east of Worcester. It stands above and to the west of the village of Cofton Hackett, and is part of the Lickey Hills Country Park. The three hilltops comprising The Lickeys—Bilberry Hill, Rednal Hill and Cofton Hill—form the northern extremity of the Lickey Ridge, a formation of hard quartzite. Views over Birmingham and the surrounding countryside can be seen from the top of these hills. The hill is named after the tracts of Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) bushes that cover the hill, between the pathways. Local people have been cropping the bushes of their fruit each autumn for hundreds of years to make jams, preserves or apple and bilberry pies.

Lickey is a 'Linear Development', as opposed to a village, in the north of Worcestershire, England approximately 10 miles (16 km) south west from the centre of Birmingham. It lies in Bromsgrove District and is situated on the Lickey Ridge, amongst the Lickey Hills, its proximity to countryside and the city makes it a popular commuter area. The civil parish of Lickey and Blackwell has a population of 4,140.The name of Lickey dating back to 1225 is thought to have derived from 'leac' (a clearing) and 'hey' (an enclosed space), including perhaps referring to a clearing in the forest. Various names have included La Lecheye, La Lekeheye, Lechay, Lekhaye. The area forms part of the Lickey Hills Country Park which covers 524 acres.

Cofton Hackett is a village and civil parish in the Bromsgrove District of north east Worcestershire, England. It is 10+1⁄4 miles (16.5 kilometres) southwest of the city centre of Birmingham and 16 miles (26 km) northeast of Worcester. In 2011, the village had a population of 1,893 but with housing development on the former Austin Rover site, this is expected to double over the five years to 2023. The village is served by two main bus services, these being the 20 (Cofton Hackett – Queen Elizabeth Hospital) and 145/145A (Longbridge – Droitwich) operated by National Express and Diamond Bus respectively.

Cofton Reservoir is a canal feeder reservoir, south of the village of Cofton Hackett, Worcestershire in the United Kingdom. The reservoir is situated at the base of the Lickey Hills, 8.5 miles (13.7 km) south west of Birmingham. It is the highest of four Worcester and Birmingham Canal reservoirs in the upper catchments of the River Arrow. It was originally built in 1815 as a compensation reservoir for watermills, which would have otherwise been affected by the construction of the canal. It was later used as a water supply for the canal, a function for which it still serves.

Rubery is a village in the Bromsgrove District and a suburb of Birmingham in the counties of Worcestershire and West Midlands, England. It is 9 miles (14 km) from Birmingham city centre and a similar distance from Bromsgrove. Rubery was built on a sandstone quarry, now known as "Rubery Cutting"/"Leach Green Quarry", parts of which can still be seen near the Rubery 'Fly-over'. Former clay mining pits, later flooded and known locally as 'The Marl Holes', now make up Callowbrook Park, which, alongside St Chads Park, is one of the two main parks in the village. Much of the urbanisation in Rubery occurred between 1960 and 1970, where suburbs replaced former farmland and historic farms such as Callowbrook Farm (formally located at the site of Callowbrook Bridge) and Gunner Lane Farm.

Lickey Grange is a Victorian house and estate in the village of Lickey, Bromsgrove District, Worcestershire, near Birmingham, England, where the automobile manufacturer Herbert Austin lived for 31 years. It later became a residential school and is now private housing.

Barnt Green is a village and civil parish in the Bromsgrove District of Worcestershire, England, situated 10 miles (16 km) south of Birmingham city centre, with a population at the 2011 census of 1,794.

Colmers School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in the Rednal area of Birmingham, in the West Midlands of England.Previously a community school solely administered by Birmingham City Council, Colmers School became a foundation school in 2009. The school offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils. The school also has a sixth form consisting of Year 12 and 13 students, based in its Sixth Form Centre with students studying a range of A-level subjects. The school has a house system, currently comprising three houses: Wolf, Eagle and Dolphin. Students join one of the three houses upon entry to the school and compete in range of areas to win the annually-awarded House Cup. Colmers Community Leisure Centre also operates from the school site, offering sports and leisure facilities to the local community outside school hours.
