Checkpoint Charlie

The Freedom Memorial (German: Freiheitsmahnmal) was a memorial to the victims of the Berlin Wall in the vicinity of the Checkpoint Charlie Museum in Berlin. It opened on October 31, 2004, and was praised by both victims of the GDR communist regime and human rights advocates alike. In 2004, Alexandra Hildebrandt leased an empty lot near the site of the former Checkpoint Charlie, and installed the Freedom Memorial to the victims of the border forces. While welcomed by many, it was criticized by Berlin officials as being historically and symbolically inaccurate, and for being erected by a private individual without a public process. The following year, the lease was terminated by the land owner, a bank. Hildebrand refused to clear out the monument, and the crosses which made up the memorial were removed by bailiffs following a court order.

The Checkpoint Charlie Museum (German: Das Mauermuseum – Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie) is a private museum in Berlin. It is named after the famous crossing point on the Berlin Wall, and was created to document the so-called "best border security system in the world" (in the words of East German general Heinz Hoffmann). On display are the photos and related documents of successful escape attempts from East Germany, together with the escape apparatus: hot-air balloons, getaway cars, chairlifts, and a mini-U-boat. The museum researches and maintains a list of deaths at the Berlin Wall. It is operated by the Mauermuseum-Betriebs gGmbH, and the director is Alexandra Hildebrandt.

The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program (German: Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD) is a residential program for artists of all countries and ages run by the German Academic Exchange Service (German: ‘Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst', DAAD) in Berlin. Originally initiated by the Ford Foundation in 1963, the program has been run by the DAAD – with the assistance of the German Federal Foreign Office and the Senate of Berlin – since 1965. From the Web site: Programme description The Artists-in-Berlin Program sees itself as a platform for artistic and cultural exchange throughout and beyond Europe. Every year, it invites applications from around the world for approximately 20 fellowships, usually funding a one-year stay in Berlin. These fellowships are aimed at extraordinary and internationally established artists from abroad. The Artists-in-Berlin Program is designed to offer its guests space for their creative work, promote the diversity and variety of artistic viewpoints, and strengthen the freedom of the arts and the written and spoken word. Fellowship holders therefore have every freedom to develop their approach, to work on their art, and to interact with fellow artists. Target group Internationally established and outstanding artists from abroad who would like to come to Berlin in order to work on their art and interact with fellow artists. Age is irrelevant.

The Deutsches Currywurst Museum was a museum in Berlin dedicated to German currywurst sausage. The museum was located in Berlin-Mitte near Checkpoint Charlie and was the first and only museum about currywurst. The museum received approximately 350,000 visitors annually.The museum has been permanently closed since 21 December 2018.

Friedrichstadt was an independent suburb of Berlin, and is now a historical neighbourhood of the city itself. The neighbourhood is named after the Prussian king Frederick I.

The relief sculpture Friede sei mit Dir (German: [ˈfʁiːdə ˈzaɪ mɪt ˈdiːɐ̯]), also known as the cock of Berlin is an artwork by sculptor Peter Lenk. It is located in Berlin at the former building of the editorial staff of German newspaper taz. The sculpture displays living persons who were involuntarily used in controversial headlines by newspaper Bild. The main part is a caricature of former Bild editor-in-chief Kai Diekmann, stretched over five floors. The title on the top floor, "Friede sei mit Dir", is a double entendre: either "Peace be with you" or "Friede be with you", the latter referring to Bild's publisher who is depicted on the left-hand side of the fourth-floor façade snake-charming.The sculpture's background is a satirical article and the ensuing lawsuit. In 2002, journalist Gerhard Henschel claimed that Kai Diekmann had undergone a failed medical enhancement operation. Dieckmann sued, unsuccessfully, for damages to his personality rights. The court held that the claimant, in his function as chief editor of Bild, had willingly decided to become an actor in a personality-rights-infringing business from which he was profiting economically, and therefore was not entitled to maximum protection against infringement of his own rights.The sculpture itself was installed in 2009 and remains legally unchallenged.

Kochstraße is a Berlin U-Bahn station located on the . It is close to Checkpoint Charlie and the Checkpoint Charlie Museum.

Memoria Urbana Berlin (also known as Reconstruction Bohemian Bethlehem Church) is a public sculpture by Spanish artist Juan Garaizabal that stands in the middle of the Bethlehemkirchplatz, Mitte district, Berlin, Germany. It was constructed in June 2012 on the mosaic marking the exact site and size of the original Bohemian or Bethlehem Church (German: Böhmische Kirche, Bethlehemskirche), which was destroyed in the war. The sculpture is made up of 800 meters (2,600 feet) of square section (12x12 cm/4.7 in) steel tube and 300 meters (984 feet) of LED illumination system. Its structure draws in the air the lines of the silhouette of the lost construction, recreating its volume in the form of a sketch. It measures 25 x 15 x 31 metres (82 x 49 x 101 feet) in height and weighs 44 short tons (40 metric tons).

Leipziger Straße is a major thoroughfare in the central Mitte district of Berlin, capital of Germany. It runs from Leipziger Platz, an octagonal square adjacent to Potsdamer Platz in the west, to Spittelmarkt in the east. Part of the Bundesstraße 1 highway, it is today one of the city's main east–west road links.

GSW Headquarters (since 2017: Rocket-Tower) is a high-rise office building in the district of Berlin-Kreuzberg. Construction commenced in 1995 and was completed in 1999. The building is 81.5 m (267 ft) high and provides 24,500 m2 of floor space for offices and shops. The GSW Headquarters 1990s extension tower was designed by Sauerbruch Hutton architects.

The Embassy of New Zealand in Berlin is the diplomatic representation of New Zealand in the Federal Republic of Germany. The building in which the embassy is located on the fourth floor can be found at Friedrichstrasse 60 (the name of the building is "Atrium") on the corner of Leipziger Strasse. The current ambassador is Rupert Holborow.The embassy offers consular services for New Zealanders in Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the Czech Republic and is also the contact point for citizens from these countries in embassy matters.In addition to the embassy in Berlin, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade also has a consulate-general in Hamburg.

The Kreuzberg Tower and Wings are a complex of three buildings, designed by the American architect John Hejduk. Located close to Checkpoint Charlie, the project was completed in 1988, shortly before the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. It is considered an iconic work of 20th-century architecture, and one of very few that Hejduk realised during his lifetime.
