Marston Montgomery

Sudbury was a rural district of Derbyshire in England from 1894 to 1934. It was created from the part of the Uttoxeter rural sanitary district that was in Derbyshire (with the larger part in Staffordshire forming the Uttoxeter Rural District). It consisted of the parishes of Boyleston, Cubley, Doveridge, Marston Montgomery, Norbury and Roston, Somersal Herbert and Sudbury. It was abolished in 1934 under a County Review Order, and its area transferred to Ashbourne Rural District.

Somersal Herbert is a hamlet and civil parish in Derbyshire, England, 2 miles northeast of Doveridge. Somersal Herbert Hall was built c.1564, incorporating an earlier building from c.1500, and is a Grade I listed building. Hill Somersal and Potter Somersal are minor settlements within 1 mile.

Somersal Herbert Hall is a privately owned timber-framed 16th-century country house at Somersal Herbert, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire, in England. It is a Grade I listed building.The Fitzherbert family came to Somersal in the 13th century when the estate was acquired by Thomas Fitzherbert, second son of Sir William Fitzherbert of Norbury. The present timber-framed house was built by John Fitzherbert on the site of an earlier manor house in 1564. The entrance front at the south and other parts were encased in brick in 1712, when the property was enlarged. The Somersal line of the Fitzherbert family was extinct on the death of Richard Fitzherbert in 1803. The estate was initially sold in 1806 outside the family but was later repurchased by his cousin Alleyne Fitzherbert, 1st Baron St Helens, younger brother of Sir William Fitzherbert, Bt of Tissington. He lent it in 1808 for life to cousins of his, the novelist Frances Jacson (1754–1842) and her sister Maria Jacson (1755–1829), a writer on botany and gardening, who were in financial straits caused by a spendthrift brother. In about 1850 Sir Henry Fitzherbert, Bt enlarged the house by the addition of a north wing for his second son Richard who was in occupation of the house in 1881. His son Anthony emigrated to New Zealand and the estate was sold. It was modernised and restored in 1899; further restoration work was carried out in 2004.

Rocester Abbey was a medieval monastic house at Rocester, Staffordshire, England of which there is now no trace above ground level. The Augustinian abbey of St. Mary, Rocester was founded in Dovedale between 1141 and 1146 by Richard Bacon, a half brother-in-law of Ranulph, 6th Earl of Chester and a son-in-law of Hugh de Kevelioc, the previous earl. The Earls of Chester were the early patrons of the abbey until the death of the 7th Earl in 1237, after which the earldom was annexed to the Crown, who thereby took over the patronage. Nevertheless, the abbey, a relatively small one, was also commensurately poor. Improved funding in the 13th century and the granting to them of the right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair at Rocester improved their situation. In 1538, the abbey was finally dissolved as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. At the time the abbey was dissolved there were only 9 monks there, including the abbot. Most of the building was dismantled for its reusable materials and the land sold to Richard Trentham, the MP for Shropshire. He relocated his family there, where a manor house was built, and the property subsequently passed down in the Trentham family. The site today is known as Abbey Fields and is an open space with traces of an earlier Roman Fort.

Cubley is a parish of two closely linked villages six miles (10 km) south of Ashbourne in Derbyshire. Great Cubley and Little Cubley are known collectively as Cubley. The parish church of St Andrew is roughly equidistant from the two, but is formally in Great Cubley. The church is Grade I listed. The population of the civil parish (including Alkmonton) taken at the 2011 Census was 232.

Brocksford Hall is a country house about one mile (1.6 km) east of Doveridge village, in the south west corner of Derbyshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

Rocester is a village and civil parish in the East Staffordshire district of Staffordshire, England. Its name is spelt Rowcestre in the Domesday Book. It is located on the Derbyshire border.

Doveridge is a village and civil parish in Derbyshire, United Kingdom, near the border with Staffordshire and about 2 km (1.2 mi) east of Uttoxeter. Its name may come from its having a bridge over the river Dove (i.e. Dove(B)ridge), a tributary of the River Trent. The civil parish population (including Oaks Green) as taken at the 2011 Census was 1,622.Doveridge has a pub, the "Cavendish Arms", a village shop, and a working men's club. The village also has a football team and a cricket team, both quite successful in their local leagues.
