Somersal Herbert

Somersal Herbert Hall is a privately owned timber-framed 16th-century country house at Somersal Herbert, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire, in England. It is a Grade I listed building.The Fitzherbert family came to Somersal in the 13th century when the estate was acquired by Thomas Fitzherbert, second son of Sir William Fitzherbert of Norbury. The present timber-framed house was built by John Fitzherbert on the site of an earlier manor house in 1564. The entrance front at the south and other parts were encased in brick in 1712, when the property was enlarged. The Somersal line of the Fitzherbert family was extinct on the death of Richard Fitzherbert in 1803. The estate was initially sold in 1806 outside the family but was later repurchased by his cousin Alleyne Fitzherbert, 1st Baron St Helens, younger brother of Sir William Fitzherbert, Bt of Tissington. He lent it in 1808 for life to cousins of his, the novelist Frances Jacson (1754–1842) and her sister Maria Jacson (1755–1829), a writer on botany and gardening, who were in financial straits caused by a spendthrift brother. In about 1850 Sir Henry Fitzherbert, Bt enlarged the house by the addition of a north wing for his second son Richard who was in occupation of the house in 1881. His son Anthony emigrated to New Zealand and the estate was sold. It was modernised and restored in 1899; further restoration work was carried out in 2004.

Sudbury was a rural district of Derbyshire in England from 1894 to 1934. It was created from the part of the Uttoxeter rural sanitary district that was in Derbyshire (with the larger part in Staffordshire forming the Uttoxeter Rural District). It consisted of the parishes of Boyleston, Cubley, Doveridge, Marston Montgomery, Norbury and Roston, Somersal Herbert and Sudbury. It was abolished in 1934 under a County Review Order, and its area transferred to Ashbourne Rural District.

Brocksford Hall is a country house about one mile (1.6 km) east of Doveridge village, in the south west corner of Derbyshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

The United Kingdom's M64 motorway was planned during the 1970s to link the M6 at Stoke-on-Trent with the M1 near Castle Donington, by way of Uttoxeter and Derby. Its purpose would have been to allow traffic travelling from the south-east to the north-west to avoid the busy M6 around Birmingham. It was cancelled in 1976. During the 1990s, the A50 between Stoke and Derby was upgraded to dual carriageway instead, following roughly the same route as the middle section of the M64. However, instead of terminating on the M6, the new dual carriageway terminated deep inside the urban area of Stoke on the A500, and at the eastern end, it terminated on the M1 further north than originally planned. Meanwhile, the M6 Toll motorway was built to ease traffic congestion north of Birmingham. The "M64" number had previously been reserved for the Manchester motorway that opened as the M602 in 1971.

Waldley is a hamlet in Derbyshire, England. It is located 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Doveridge. Waldley has had many spellings, let alone pronunciations. Pronounced as Walled-lee... It was originally spelt as Wardley, but it is believed that the OS Mappers mis-wrote it and it then forever came Waldley.The hamlet is part of the Derbyshire Dales constituency, and the current MP is the Conservative Sarah Dines.

Marston Montgomery is a small village and civil parish in western Derbyshire. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was at least 3. It is four miles from the town of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. The Church of Saint Giles dates back to Norman times but was heavily restored during the 19th century. The village's school also has a lengthy history, as it has been in existence since at least 1831. Marston Montgomery is close to the villages of Cubley and Norbury.

Doveridge is a village and civil parish in Derbyshire, United Kingdom, near the border with Staffordshire and about 2 km (1.2 mi) east of Uttoxeter. Its name may come from its having a bridge over the river Dove (i.e. Dove(B)ridge), a tributary of the River Trent. The civil parish population (including Oaks Green) as taken at the 2011 Census was 1,622.Doveridge has a pub, the "Cavendish Arms", a village shop, and a working men's club. The village also has a football team and a cricket team, both quite successful in their local leagues.

Marchington railway station was a railway station in Marchington, Staffordshire which opened in 1854 and closed in 1958. It was on the Crewe to Derby Line.
