Lake Murray Country

Lake Murray is a reservoir in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It is approximately 50,000 acres (20,000 hectares) in size, and has roughly 650 mi (1,050 kilometres) of shoreline. It was impounded in the late 1920s to provide hydroelectric power to the state of South Carolina. Lake Murray is fed by the Saluda River, which flows from upstate South Carolina near the North Carolina state line. The Saluda Dam (officially the Dreher Shoals Dam) was an engineering feat at the time of its construction. The dam, using the native red clay soil and bedrock, was the largest earthen dam in the world when it was completed in 1930. Lake Murray itself is named after the project's chief engineer, William S. Murray. The Saluda Dam is approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long and 220 feet (67 m) high. Lake Murray is 41 miles (66 km) long, and 14 miles (23 km) wide at its widest point. At the time when the lake was finished, it was the world's largest man-made reservoir.In addition to serving as a source of hydroelectric power for the region, the lake has become a recreational attraction, with fishing and boating being popular activities. Also, Dreher Island State Recreation Area, located in the Western part of the lake, provides multiple activities—all focused on the lake.

John Solomon Hendrix House, also known as the Sol Hendrix House, is a historic home located near Lexington, Lexington County, South Carolina. It was built about 1850, and is a two-story, rectangular, weatherboarded frame farmhouse. It has a gable roof and exterior end chimneys. The front façade features a double tiered porch supported by square wood posts.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Jacob Wingard Dreher House, also known as Glencoe Farm, is an historic home located near Irmo, Lexington County, South Carolina. It was built about 1830–50, and is a two-story, rectangular weatherboarded frame farmhouse. It has a gable roof and features a one-story, shed-roofed porch across the front façade. A single story wing, added about 1910, is connected to the left elevation by a porch. Also on the property is a one-story, frame, weatherboarded store building, which was moved to its present location about 1945.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Lake Murray of Richland is a census-designated place (CDP) in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,110 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Ballentine-Shealy House, also known as the Ballentine-Shealy-Slocum House, is a historic home located near Lexington, Lexington County, South Carolina. It was built in the late-18th or early-19th century, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, rectangular log building. It is sheathed in weatherboard and has a standing seam metal gable roof. It has shed rooms on the rear and a one-story shed-roofed front porch with an enclosed room. The house has a hall-and-parlor plan and an enclosed stair. An open breezeway connects the house to the kitchen (ca. 1870), which has a fieldstone and brick chimney and a side porch. Also on the property a dilapidated dairy, a small log barn, and a well house.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

White Rock is an unincorporated community in northwestern Richland County, South Carolina, United States, a few miles north of Lake Murray. It has a post office with the ZIP Code of 29177. The population of the ZCTA for ZIP Code 29177 was 463 at the outdated 2000 census. The Lowman Home retirement home was established in 1911. In the 21st century, the White Rock area has been transformed by the addition and expansion of several subdivisions (Foxport, Lakeport, Osprey, Cedar Cove, Edenbrook, Eagle's Rest (est. 2007), Lakeside at Ballentine (est. 2002), Richard Franklin Estates, Westcott Ridge (across from I-26)), Waterfall, Portrait Hill, Lake Murray Elementary, Chapin Middle School, and Spring Hill High School (a magnet high school)-home to Lake Murray Docks and the Center for Advanced Technical Studies, all in Lexington & Richland County School District Five.

Lexington High School is a public high school in Lexington, South Carolina that provides education for ninth through twelfth grades, serving the communities of Lexington, Lake Murray, and West Lexington. The school's athletic mascot is the Wildcat. Lexington was the first high school and only school in South Carolina to be twice selected as the Carolina First Palmetto's Finest and the first to be named a Unified School. It is an International Baccalaureate World School.

Dreher Island State Park is in central South Carolina roughly 30 miles (48 km) from the state's capital of Columbia. It occupies all of the largest island in 50,000-acre (202 km2) Lake Murray, a reservoir of the Saluda River. The park offers boating, hiking, camping, fishing for largemouth bass and other fish, picnic areas and spaces for large group meetings. The park also contains several lodging options, including villas and cabins It was first leased from SCE&G (now SCANA) in 1970, who built the Dreher Shoals Dam, creating Lake Murray. Today it is a largely heavily wooded island with the only access being a bridge on its Northern side. The park is named after the former owner of island, Billy Dreher.

Ballentine is an unincorporated community in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina metropolitan area.

The Saluda Dam or Saluda River Dam, officially the Dreher Shoals Dam, commonly referred to as the Lake Murray Dam, is an earthen embankment dam located approximately 10 miles (15 km) west of Columbia, South Carolina on the Saluda River. Construction on the dam began in 1927 and was completed in 1930. The purpose of the dam is flood control, hydroelectricity, recreation and water supply. At the time of its completion, the Saluda Dam was the world's largest earthen dam, creating the world's largest man-made lake, Lake Murray. In 2005, construction on a 213 ft (65 m). tall roller-compacted concrete (RCC) dam was completed at the toe of the original dam in order to mitigate an earthquake-caused dam failure. South Carolina Highway 6 crosses over the dam and is used as a fast connection between the towns of Lexington and Irmo. The yearly football game between rival Lexington High School and Irmo High School is often called "The Battle of the Dam".

SC Whitmore School in South Carolina is a virtual school that is authorized by the South Carolina Public Charter School District, an extension of the South Carolina Department of Education. Opened in August 2011, it offers free public school that high school students in grades 9-12 attend from home. The school operates year-round without semesters. Coursework is self-paced and based upon mastery learning. Students work with certified teachers in self-paced, asynchronous classes to revise their assignments until they have demonstrated mastery. The SC Whitmore School is accredited by the AdvancED Accreditation Commission.

Chapin High School is a public high school in Chapin, South Carolina. Nearly 1,400 students attend Chapin High School, as of the 2017–2018 school year. Chapin High School is one of four high schools in Lexington & Richland County School District Five.
