North Skelton railway station

Skelton and Brotton is a civil parish in the unitary authority area of Redcar and Cleveland, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. It consists of the town of Skelton-in-Cleveland and village of Brotton. It had a population of 12,848 at the 2011 Census.The modern Skelton Castle incorporates part of the ancient stronghold of Robert de Brus who held it from Henry I. A modern church replaces the ancient one, of which there are ruins, and a fine Norman font is preserved. The large ironstone quarries have not wholly destroyed the appearance of the district. The Cleveland Hills rise sharply southward, to elevations sometimes exceeding 1,000 feet (300 m), and are scored with deep and picturesque glens. On the coast, which is cliff-bound and fine, is the watering-place of Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

North Skelton Mine was an ironstone mine in the village of North Skelton in North Yorkshire, England. The mine was the deepest of the ironstone mines in Cleveland and was also the last to close, which came in January 1964. Some buildings still exist on the surface as well as spoil heaps. Due to the mine being developed further north, the name of North Skelton Mine stuck, even when it was moved south east of Skelton village.

Saltburn Gill (grid reference NZ676205) is an 19.11 hectares (47.2 acres) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Redcar and Cleveland district, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. The site was notified in 1986. The "gill" in the name is a dialectal word meaning "ravine, narrow valley". In May 1999, the colour of the water in Saltburn Gill turned orange overnight. An investigation found the cause to be rising water levels in the abandoned Longacres Ironstone Mine in Skelton-in-Cleveland. A remediation programme was undertaken throughout the 2000s and 2010s, which resulted in clear water and fish returning to the gill in 2016.

Freebrough Academy is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Brotton, North Yorkshire, England.Previously known as Warsett School, it later was renamed Freebrough Specialist Engineering College. The school converted to academy status in September 2010 and was renamed Freebrough Academy. The school is sponsored by the Northern Education Trust.Freebrough Academy offers GCSEs, BTECs, OCR Nationals and NVQs as programmes of study for pupils, while students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A-levels and further BTECs. The school also has specialisms in engineering and business and enterprise.

The Saltburn Miniature Railway is a 15 in (381 mm) gauge railway at Saltburn, in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, England.

North Skelton is a village in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, England. The village is 1 mile (2 km) south of Skelton-in-Cleveland, and just south of the A174 road between Thornaby and Whitby. North Skelton experienced a boom in the 1870s when North Skelton Mine opened. The mine was the deepest of all of the Cleveland Ironstone workings and its shaft extended to over 720 feet (220 m) in depth. The mine produced over 25,000,000 tonnes (28,000,000 tons) of iron ore between its opening in 1872 and its closure in 1964. North Skelton railway station was on the line between Teesside and Whitby West Cliff. It opened in 1902 and closed in 1951. The line is still open to carry freight from Skinningrove Steelworks and Boulby Mine.North Skelton lends its name to an English Long Sword Dance performed in the area.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea, commonly referred to as Saltburn, is a seaside town in the civil parish of Saltburn, Marske and New Marske, Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, England, around 12 miles (19 km) south-east of Hartlepool and just under 5 miles (8 km) south-east of Redcar. It lies within the historic boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire. It had a population of 5,958 in 2011.The development of Middlesbrough and Saltburn was driven by the discovery of ironstone in the Cleveland Hills and the building of two railways to transport the minerals.

Brotton railway station was opened by the Cleveland Railway on 1 November 1875, and served the village of Brotton in North Yorkshire, England. It was built to the designs of the architect William Peachey. It closed on 2 May 1960.

Skelton Beck is a small river in North Yorkshire, England. The beck only runs for 23 kilometres (14 mi) and feeds directly into the North Sea on the south side of Saltburn beach. The beck is noted for occasionally being polluted with wastewater from the abandoned ironstone workings in its headwaters.

Langbaurgh East was a wapentake of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the eastern division of Langbaurgh, England. The name is now in use as a local justice area (formerly a petty sessional division), consisting of the eastern, mostly rural part of the borough of Redcar and Cleveland. The East Wapentake in particular covered roughly the area of modern-day Redcar & Cleveland and the northernmost parts of the Scarborough district. The boundary roughly follows from Wilton along to Redcar in the north and all the way down to Whitby in the south across to Danby, west of Whitby then back up along the Cleveland Hills back up to Wilton.

Lockwood is a civil parish in the unitary authority of Redcar and Cleveland with ceremonial association with North Yorkshire, England. The population of Lockwood ward in the Redcar and Cleveland Unitary authority taken at the 2011 census was 2,022.The parish was historically in the North Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, when it was transferred to Cleveland. In 1996, it was given to the newer county of North Yorkshire.

Skelton-in-Cleveland or Skelton is a market town in the civil parish of Skelton and Brotton at the foot of the Cleveland Hills and about 10 miles (16 km) east of Middlesbrough centre. It is in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, England. The first real mention of Skelton is in the Domesday Book of 1086, which details taxes collected. Skelton Castle was built in the 12th century by the de Brus (Bruce) family. It is a town by market charter. Skelton is made up of villages; including North Skelton, Skelton Green, and New Skelton. Population of the Skelton Built-up area was 6,535, at the 2011 census.
