Uppingham railway station

Uppingham was a rural district in Rutland, England from 1894 to 1974, covering the south of the county. The rural district was formed by the Local Government Act 1894 from the part of the Uppingham rural sanitary district in Rutland. At the same time, the remainder of Uppingham RSD, which lay in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire became Hallaton Rural District and Gretton Rural District respectively. The only town in the district was Uppingham. The rural district was abolished in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972. Uppingham RD was merged with three other authorities to become the non-metropolitan district of Rutland.

Uppingham is a market town and civil parish in the ceremonial county of Rutland, England, off the A47 between Leicester and Peterborough, 6 miles (10 km) south of Oakham. It had a population of 4,745 according to the 2011 census, estimated at 4,853 in 2019. The town is known for its eponymous public school. With its art galleries Uppingham has become a popular destination for art lovers. Uppingham was named "best place to live in the Midlands in 2022" by The Times newspaper, who commented on the town by calling it "a discerning market town with art, heart and smarts — plus the magnificent Rutland Water".

Uppingham Community College is a mixed secondary school located in Uppingham in the English county of Rutland.It was previously a community school administered by Rutland County Council. Uppingham Community College then briefly became a foundation school before being converted to academy status in April 2011. However the school continues to coordinate with Rutland County Council for admissions. Uppingham Community College offers GCSEs, BTECs and vocational courses as programmes of study for pupils. The school specialises in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), and has additional resources and programmes of study to support the specialism.

Catmose College is a secondary academy school on Huntsmans Drive in Oakham, Rutland. The catchment area covers the county town of Oakham and surrounding villages, although students are drawn from a wider area through parental choice. Originally Oakham Central School, the school went through a number of name changes. From 1972 until 2009 the school name was Vale of Catmose College. Moving to a new campus in 2011, it was renamed Catmose College.

Uppingham School is a public school (English fee-charging boarding and day school for pupils 13-18) in Uppingham, Rutland, England, founded in 1584 by Robert Johnson, the Archdeacon of Leicester, who also established Oakham School. The headmaster, Richard Maloney, belongs to the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference and the school to the Rugby Group of British independent schools. Edward Thring was the school's best-known headmaster (in 1853–1887). His curriculum changes were adopted in other English public schools. John Wolfenden, headmaster from 1934 to 1944, chaired the Wolfenden Committee, whose report recommending the decriminalisation of homosexuality appeared in 1957. Uppingham has a musical tradition based on work by Paul David and Robert Sterndale Bennett. It has the biggest playing-field area of any school in England, in three separate areas of the town: Leicester to the west, Middle to the south, and Upper to the east.

Ayston is a village and civil parish in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. It is about one mile (1.6 km) north-west of Uppingham, close to the junction of the A47 and A6003. The population of the village was less than 100 at the 2011 census and is included in the civil parish of Ridlington. The placename means Aethelstan's farm or settlement; the estate was granted to Aethelstan, a minister of Edward the Confessor, in 1046. Ayston is part of Braunston & Belton ward which has one councillor on Rutland County Council. The Grade II* listed St Mary the Virgin's Church came into the care of Churches Conservation Trust in April 2014.

Lyddington Bede House (or Lyddington Bedehouse) is a historic house in Rutland, England, owned and opened to the public by English Heritage. The existing Grade I listed building is a part of a former palace of the Bishops of Lincoln, later used as an almshouse. It is next to St Andrew's Church in the village of Lyddington. The watch tower or gazebo is separately listed as Grade I and the boundary walls are Grade II. The site is a scheduled monument.

Lyddington is a village in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. The population of the civil parish was 397 at the 2001 census, and had fallen to 366 at the 2011 census.The village's name origin is uncertain. Perhaps, 'farm/settlement of Hlyda' or 'farm/settlement with a noisy stream'. Lyddington Bede House, owned by English Heritage, is a Grade I listed building incorporating parts of a medieval bishop's palace. In 1547 it was seized on behalf of the king from the Bishops of Lincoln and later passed to Lord Burghley. In 1600 part of the palace was converted into an almshouse and it continued in this use until 1930. The remains of the fishponds of the bishop's palace are nearby. St Andrew's Church is also Grade I listed.There are two public houses, The Marquess of Exeter and The Old White Hart.

The Church of St John the Baptist is a Church of England parish church in Bisbrooke, Rutland. A Victorian building, it is Grade II listed.
