Entrance to Detroit School of Arts is based on an audition that takes place at the end of a student's eighth grade year. Students are required to declare a major of study i.e. Dance, Theatre, Instrumental Music, etc. It is one of four magnet schools in Detroit, where the others are Renaissance High School, Cass Technical High School and Communication & Media Arts High School. Entrance is based on test scores and middle school grades.

The hall is renowned for its superior acoustic properties and serves as the home of the internationally known Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO), the fourth oldest orchestra in the United States. With the creation of an adjoining auditorium for jazz and chamber music in 2003, Orchestra Hall became part of the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
