Aviano

Aviano Middle/High School (previously Aviano American High School) is a Department of Defense Education Activity secondary school located on the Italian owned NATO Air Base in Aviano, Italy which hosts the 31st Fighter Wing. The majority of students are dependents of active duty military personnel, DoD employees, contractors and diplomats, although a small percentage are children of other English speaking expatriates or local Italian residents. As of the 2008–2009 school year Aviano Middle School and Aviano High School were joined into one school serving grades 6-12. It is classified as a Division II school in DoDDS Europe. The school's mascot is the saint.

Piancavallo (Friulian: Plancjaval) is a ski resort in the Dolomites of northern Italy. It is a frazione of the comune of Aviano, in the province of Pordenone in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Piancavallo is situated at 1,280 metres (4,199 ft) above sea level, at the foot of Monte Cavallo (2,251 m (7,385 ft)). The nearest railway station is that of Aviano, to which it is connected by regular bus services.

Aviano Air Base (IATA: AVB, ICAO: LIPA) (Italian: Base aerea di Aviano) is a base in northeastern Italy, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. It is located in the Aviano municipality, at the foot of the Carnic Pre-Alps or Southern Carnic Alps, about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Pordenone. The Italian Air Force has ownership, and administrative and military control of the base. It hosts the U.S. Air Force's 31st Fighter Wing and per nuclear sharing is one of six active air bases in five European countries with B61 nuclear bombs in underground WS3 Weapon Storage and Security System inside aircraft shelters.The 31st Fighter Wing is the only U.S. fighter wing south of the Alps. The 31st Fighter Wing is made up of two General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter squadrons, the 555th Fighter Squadron and the 510th Fighter Squadron, allowing it to fly both attack and defensive missions.

Alpi Aviation srl (English: Alps Aviation Limited) is an Italian aircraft manufacturer based in Pordenone. The company specializes in the design and manufacture of light aircraft in the form of kits for amateur construction and ready-to-fly aircraft in the European Fédération Aéronautique Internationale microlight category.The company produces a range of both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, both manned and unmanned. These include the Alpi Pioneer 200 and 230, the 300, the aerobatic 330 microlights and the four seat 400 kit aircraft. The 200 and 300 series are built from a combination of wood and composites. The company also manufactures the Syton AH 130 turbine-powered helicopter which is derived from the Rotorway Exec. Alpi also markets the Alpi Strix-C fixed-wing mini unmanned aerial vehicle and the Alpi Sixton-A rotary-wing micro unmanned aerial vehicle.

The 1936 Cansiglio earthquake occurred on October 18 in the region between the provinces of Belluno, Treviso and Pordenone, in northern Italy. It caused 19 deaths and an unknown number of injuries.
