São João del-Rei

The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar (Portuguese: Catedral Basílica Nossa Sehora do Pilar), also known as the São João del Rei Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic Marian Pontifical shrine in São João del-Rei, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is a great representative of Brazilian colonial art, which contains a rich decoration in gold, paintings and statues, being under the protection of the Institute of National Artistic Patrimony of Brazil (IPHAN). The cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of São João del Rei (established in 1960). Pope Pius XII crowned the venerated Marian image within the shrine on 12 October 1954. Pope Paul VI issued a Pontifical decree Religione almae which raised the shrine to the status of Minor Basilica on 24 September 1964.

The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi (Portuguese: Igreja de São Francisco de Assis) is a Catholic temple founded by the Secular Franciscan Order in the Brazilian city of São João del-Rei, in the state of Minas Gerais. The church, started in 1774, is one of the main landmarks of Brazilian colonial art, becoming famous for the beauty of its architecture, the richness of its carving, and the work of Aleijadinho, later modified by Francisco Cerqueira. Due to its importance, the church was declared a national heritage site by the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) along with its entire collection.

Tiradentes is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. It is located at 21°06′37″S 44°12′41″W, has an area of 83.5 km2 (32.2 sq mi), and a maximum elevation above sea level of 927 m. Tiradentes had an estimated population of 10,960, as of 2020. The original village was established in 1702 and became a city on 19 January 1718. In 1889 the city was renamed from Vila de São José do Rio das Mortes in honour of the national hero who was born nearby.
