The Metro Vancouver Transit Police (MVTP), previously the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority Police Service and formally the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Police Service (SCBCTAPS), is the police force for TransLink, the public transit system of the Metro Vancouver region of British Columbia, Canada. Formed in December 2005, the Metro Vancouver Transit Police is the only police force in Canada solely dedicated to transit, as most other cities use a combination of special constables and a transit division of their local police. Transit Police are a supplementary police agency with the jurisdictional police agency retaining primary responsibility for policing in each jurisdiction they serve. Transit Police officers have the same authorities and powers as other police officers while on and off duty. They are sworn in as designated provincial constables, with full police powers throughout the province. They focus their efforts primarily on protecting the safety and security of passengers, employees, property, and revenue of Metro Vancouver's transit system.Transit Police partner with local municipal police forces and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in enforcing laws in the Metro Vancouver region. If requested, Transit Police officers will also respond to emergencies outside of transit property as would other municipal police forces. The name change was made pursuant to the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority Amendment Act 2007, effective November 30, 2007. However, references to SCBCTAPS as GVTAPS will continue to have legal effect.Transit Police, along with other BC police forces including the RCMP, seconds officers to the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia.

Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) is the oldest hospital in British Columbia and one of the busiest in the Fraser Health Authority. It is located in New Westminster overlooking the Fraser River and is the only hospital in the Lower Mainland that is immediately adjacent to a Skytrain station (Sapperton). In 2020 inpatient bed capacity increased to 490 with the opening of the Mental Health Substance Use Wellness Centre (MHSUWC). In 2017 inpatient bed capacity was reported as 447, and the site was served by 3326 employees.The hospital campus is L shaped fronting five streets: East Columbia Street, Sherbrooke Street, Allen Street, Keary Street, and Brunette Avenue. The total square footage of the site is 607,859.

Sapperton is a neighbourhood of the City of New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, located in the northeastern end of that city and up to its boundaries with the Coquitlam and Burnaby. Located on the slope above the Fraser River and focused on Brunette Avenue and Columbia Street, and northeast of the former British Columbia Penitentiary, the neighbourhood was the location of the barracks and other housing for the Royal Engineers, Columbia Detachment, who were known as "sappers", hence the name. The neighbourhood of Sapperton is filled with plenty of shops for many different needs. The shops include a place for your bicycle needs, a bar to get a drink, restaurants and karate places as well. Also located in Sapperton is the Royal Columbian Hospital. The neighbourhood of Sapperton also has plenty of outdoor space. It has multiple parks such as Sapperton and Hume Parks where anybody can spend their time on a nice day. Hume Park also contains a swimming pool and has a forested area where people can head down to enjoy the Brunette River. Sapperton is also located close to two Skytrain stations. These stations are Sapperton station, which is close to the hospital, and Braid station, which is just at the bottom of Sapperton. Furthermore, Sapperton is home to New Westminster's newest brewery which is named, Another Beer Co.

The British Columbia Penitentiary (BC Penitentiary, commonly referred to as the BC Pen and the Pen) was a federal maximum security prison located in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. The BC Penitentiary operated for 102 years, from 1878 until it was decommissioned in 1980. It was the first federal penal institution west of Manitoba. Gate house was sold on September 8,2021 and was renamed Governors Castle by new owners Vikram Bajwa and Sunny Sodhi. Braid is an elevated station on the Expo Line of Metro Vancouver's SkyTrain rapid transit system. The station is located near the intersect of Braid Street and Brunette Avenue in the Brunette Creek neighbourhood of New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. Positioned near the Coquitlam border, the station is a major transfer point for bus routes serving the Tri-City area.

Woodlands or Woodlands School was a hospital in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada that served as a psychiatric hospital and later as a facility for children with a developmental disorder, as well as runaways and wards of the state. Many incidents of abuse took place there.Woodlands opened in 1878 as the Provincial Lunatic Asylum. In 1897 the name was changed to The Provincial Hospital for the Insane. In 1950 the name was changed again to Woodlands School. Woodlands closed in 1996. The site of the former school was also considered for a station on the Expo Line portion of the SkyTrain system. However, plans to redevelop the site never materialized before the construction of the station, meaning that even though the tracks were built to accommodate the new station, it was never built. The neighborhood has since been renamed Victoria Hill, and is home to 1200 new homes.After proposals to preserve Woodlands' Centre Block Tower were opposed by former residents, New Westminster council voted in July 2011 to demolish the tower.Similar facilities elsewhere in British Columbia included Tranquille in Kamloops, Essondale or Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, and Valleyview, also in Coquitlam.

The Brunette River runs through East Burnaby, New Westminster and Coquitlam, flowing out of Burnaby Lake and to the Fraser River. It is the final outflow of the Central Valley Watershed, which consists of most streams between the Ulksen and Burnaby Heights. According to a map and materials by Heritage Advisory Committee and Environment and Waste Management Committee of the City of Burnaby (1993), the number of native campsites discovered on the shores of the Fraser River, Burrard Inlet and Deer Lake and some petroglyphs suggest that the area was used extensively by local aboriginal peoples such as the Squamish, Musqueam and Kwantlen for hunting and fishing before the arrival of European settlers. The earliest known European immigrant who settled on the banks of the Brunette River near the present-day North Road in 1860 was William Holmes. According to his daughter Charlotte, local native people gathered at their farm each season to catch and dry their winter supplies of salmon. She remembers that the salmon runs were so huge on the Brunette River that the fish actually crowded each other out of the water and if they had remained stationary "you could have walked across the stream without getting your shoes wet." The river was named by Holmes for its peaty brown colour.

The Pattullo Bridge replacement is a cable-stayed bridge under construction since 2021 that is scheduled to open in late 2025. It crosses the Fraser River and links the cities of New Westminster and Surrey in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. On July 31, 2008, TransLink opted to replace the Pattullo Bridge, rather than refurbish the aging structure. In June 2014, the Metro Vancouver Mayors' Council determined that the existing structure would be demolished and replaced with a new, four-lane bridge. Construction was expected to take place between 2019 and 2023, with $1.3 billion in funding finalized in 2018. On April 1, 2021, construction began on the replacement bridge with an expected opening in 2024. In 2024, it was expected to open in late 2025. The name of the new bridge, which will be in Halkomelem, will be chosen jointly by the Musqueam First Nation and the Kwantlen First Nation.

The New Westminster Bridge (also known as the New Westminster Rail Bridge (NSRW) or the Fraser River Swing Bridge) is a swing bridge that crosses the Fraser River and connects New Westminster with Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. The bridge is owned by the Government of Canada, operated and maintained by the Canadian National Railway, with the Southern Railway of British Columbia (SRY), Canadian Pacific Railway, and BNSF Railway having track usage rights, as do Amtrak's Cascades (with service to Portland and Seattle) and Via Rail's The Canadian (with service to Toronto).

The Pattullo Bridge is a through arch bridge that crosses the Fraser River and links the city of New Westminster to the city of Surrey in British Columbia. It was named in honour of Thomas Dufferin Pattullo, the 22nd Premier of British Columbia. A key link between Surrey and the rest of Greater Vancouver, the Pattullo Bridge handles an average of 75,700 cars and 3840 trucks daily, or roughly 20% of vehicle traffic across the Fraser River as of 2013.

Queen's Park is a neighbourhood and community park in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. The recreational area and tourist attraction dates from 1887. The park is 75 acres (300,000 m2) in extent, and is located north east of the city hall. The park houses Queen's Park Arena, current home of the New Westminster Salmonbellies, a stadium, seasonal animal petting farm, spray park, tennis courts, sports fields and band shell. Queen's Park residential area is to the southwest of the park, bounded on the northwest by 6th Avenue, on the southwest by 6th Street, on the southeast by Royal Avenue, and on the north by the park itself.

Queen's Park Arena is a 3,500 seat multi-use arena located within Queen's Park in New Westminster, British Columbia.The arena was built in 1930 and opened on September 19. In its time, the Queen's Park Arena hosted the New Westminster Bruins of the Western Hockey League and British Columbia Junior Hockey League teams the New Westminster Royals and the Royal City Outlaws. It hosted the New Westminster Lacrosse teams for more than 75 years, including the multi-Mann Cup champion New Westminster Salmonbellies of the Western Lacrosse Association, and has a wooden floor for lacrosse known for its green colour.The arena was also home to the professional New Westminster Royals, which played in the Pacific Coast Hockey League from 1945 to 1952 and the Western Hockey League from 1952 to 1959. In 1949, team director Doug Grimston insisted on the continuation of a smoking ban at the arena, and stated that he would take financial responsibility for lost attendance.The arena was used in the 2004 film Miracle, as the location of tryouts for the United States men's national ice hockey team in advance of the 1980 Winter Olympics.
